I have that exact car... even color. I'm having the exact issues and the dealership can't seem to find the problem after I spent money on a full diagnostic. I went back after I found the code and they replaced the water pump. At nearly $900. A month later, the problem is back. Now you show me this and I'm sure that's the issue. Thank you so much!!!

HI!Great video and details what is going on, when you mysteriously loosing coolant, that is not leaking or not going into the engine. Just dropped off my 2018 Prius Prime at the dealer with exactly the same problem. The person accepted the car at the register said is "a known issue" for these cars and yet I didn't find almost anything online until I got across this video. I got this car as a Toyota Certified Vehicle and I am just hoping that this is covered by that or there is a recall on it. Thank you for the great video.

Yes, I had this problem on Prius v 2012. I notice when it dam on rainy or snow day engine went into shaking mode. So what I did was to losing the coolant engine reservoir cap. It help stopping engine shaking but I will have to refill engine coolant.

It should be noted that the gasoline engines for the hybrid vehicles that Toyota produces go through an exponentially higher number of hot and cold cycles compared to a full, 100% gas drive engine. So, you will see a Prius engine, mainly from 2009 to 2014, have a head gasket failure between 120,000 and 150,000 miles.
So, the newer ones are better engineered and, while this particular car was obviously used for some sort of delivery or taxi type service, we don't expect to see head gaskets failing at the rates that the previous generation suffered from. The heat exchanger is a unique element to the gas hybrid vehicle. It is an efficient use of heat and is wonderful engineering.
Considering how easy it is to total a Prius, or any hybrid or vehicle with radar sensors in the front and back by any manufacturer, after an accident, those heat exchange systems should be readily available at junk yards at an extremely good deal. It's the catalytic converters that they demand all the money for.

THANK YOU. Totally correct! Same for my 2017 Toyota Prius (Canada)...the part is not available here but should be a recall and warranty. Hope to find out what happened after you made this video. Driving without heat and either replacing coolant (without a bypass) or burning gas. This is known issue by Toyota...how to get the part (1,700 in Canada AND some compensation?...help!) Have a great independent brilliant mechanic who figured this out after a lot of guesswork you know where.

My 2016 Toyota Prius has a refrigerant leak. I fill it up every day and it runs empty a few hours later. I don't see any signs of leaks on the chassis. I've driven it for about 270,000 miles. Toyota Longo 4s said it would cost $4,800 to repair it because they found water in the engine with a probe. Is this crazy? Such an expensive repair bill!

I'm hoping to rule this problem out, but I can't tell where the leak's coming from yet. We had about 2 tablespoons of coolant that dripped down from the front passenger wheel-well onto the garage floor. The engine reservoir only needed a splash to bring it up to the FULL line. Inverter is full. Don't see signs of any leak poking around the top of the engine, trying to look around the sides, and under the car the best I could without raising it. No coolant signs around the tailpipe. Needs an oil change this weekend, so we'll be lifting it, and looking further.

I noticed in the last video the new highway 101 sign. I wonder if that is a hint for us for something or perhaps a gift from a fan..
Anyway Pete, this Japan built Prius is one owner at 104 thousand miles. About 21k/year.. makes me wonder if he is an ubershare worker. Anyway. You asked me about recalls. This unit has possible faulty locking parking brake, hybrid PCU connection could short out to the box, and also if purchased from Gulf States dealers the spare was not set properly at PDI. That's all I see for recalls. Toyo unfortunately does few recalls and only if absolutely necessary as you maybe know from the service writers. Some people were denied oil ring repair if it did not drink over a quart of oil for the 2.4l-4 bangers of ten years ago.. maybe it was a TSB but I didn't care to look through them this morning. Peace to you crocodile.
