Turn On Your Lovelight - Hudba
Here's what Phil had to say about this show in "Searching for the Sound":
"We started off the 3 night Avalon gig with a test run of the set up, making sure everything worked OK. On the second night, we opened the show with our current major sequence, "Dark Star", "St. Steven", "The Eleven", and "Lovelight" and played it for all it was worth. So much so that we came offstage saying things like "I don't believe it" and "That was the one". The one that got away, that is. At the same time we were happily playing along, Bear, who at this point was working on the recording team, was crouching under the board working on an input card mumbling "I can't seem to get anything from the number 13-line driver," the channel for Bob's guitar. When we came running up to the recording room, demanding to hear the playback and discovered that not one note Bob had played had gone on tape. We turned on Bear like a pack of rabid wolves, reducing him to nearly tears within minutes. We all thought we'd played one of the finest sets ever, only to be betrayed by the very tools we just brought to life.
Well just to show you never can tell, the very next night we went out and did it again, this time capturing the complete sequence in glorious multitrack and technicolor. Everyone in the band was ecstatic that we'd been able to play at all well, let alone at that level. It was as if the music itself was a living being once again, growing, experiencing, evolving. Sighs of relief all around. We had a major part of an album on tape."
1969….Grateful Dead most psychedelic year..also..Miles Davis “ Bitches Brew”….Jets win Super Bowl….Mets win World Series…Knicks win NBA championship…..Man steps on the moon…..Beatles last year together….Allman Brothers debut album…
There’s WOS and then there’s everyone else. We love all of em. Thank you.
The first 3 months of 1969 is the Dead at their very best!! I got to see them in late 1970. They were still fantastic, but nothing can match 1969. Way to go, WOS!
I am the all of you because I missed pig pens Blues! My first show wasn't until 72, but it was a hell of a show! The dead and Allman Brothers played together for a 2-day show in Washington DC, I was 17 years old! But the Grateful Dead has to be seen tripping to really appreciate them! The second day was when I became a deadhead for life! I've still got a warlocks poster from 1964 playing at Palo Alto High School for a $1.50! Can you imagine seeing Garcia for a $1.50?!
True, 100% freay psychedila right here. Good lord! Thanks for posting!
athem of the sun was the first GD record i heard..my older brother bought it and didnt like it and i did
This is fabulous for many reasons WoS but especially for this reason. The Eleven and Lovelight segments were used on the iconic Live Dead album but the Dark Star and St. Stpehen were patched in from a 2/27/69 show at The Fillmore West. Ther other parts were from a 3/2/69 Fillmore West show. The Dead played this sequence of songs we hear in this show a lot in those early years. So, the Live Dead album was a kind of Frankenstein creation which took the best of three great shows and made one album. You would never know it. But thanks for posting the Avalon Ballroom show because we get to hear the best of those shows (as Phil reported) as it actually happened! That said, the Live Dead album is still considered one of the greatest live albums ever produced. They also used a special setup that allowed for a very high quality recording onto a sixteen track recorder, thanks to our favorite mad scientist being at the controls, Augustus Owsley Stanley III.
Ah, Jerry & the boys bend my mind; move it from forlorn/forsaken to the fine
You are fabulous for so many reasons. Buut the biggest one is that your easy

happy 420
Smokin' hot show, just relentlessly rocking all the way through. Should have used this night's "Death Don't Have No Mercy" for Live/Dead
I don't know about that: I consider THAT DDHNM to have the best Garcia solo to ever appear on an album (but I'll give this one a listen to see what you're thinking).
For those who may not know, William Tell Bridge to Lovelight are the versions on Live/Dead.
Listening once again…truly astounding music…..
Happy 4/20 😊
