Well, '77 sabers had a cord like an orignal lore saber so not much options for a moulinet or figure 8 and they had to be hidden under robes or clothing
You see this in their fight when they're both doing that spinning thing. I always thought they both had the same thought of "I'll reset my stance and wait for him to attack", and so there was a second of them both spinning.
The spin move isn’t just flashy but it allows him to reposition and reset his stance to defend himself while keeping distance between him and his opponents.
Considering how much of a fan he was before Phantom Menace and how he apparently made the saber noises while filming paired with how often he seems to do it, I think it's safe to assume Ewan wasn't meant to spin his saber but did so because he could 😂

Obi-Wan simply fulfilled a promise to Qui-Gon which was to *train* Anakin so that the latter could fulfill his role and duty as "The Chosen One" who would bring balance to The Force and nothing more than that. So it was *Anakin's* own lust for power, hubris, poor emotional maturity and other sorts of flaws that served to be his downfall at the end of the day and even if Qui-Gon was still alive, I don't think that the outcome would've be *that* much drastically different either tbqh.

Goddamn the camera work in the Disney films is atrocious! You can really see how far the quality dipped from the prequel trilogy to the sequel trilogy - both in choreography and cinematography.
I mean, it’s not really a move that was given to him. It’s merely a parry or block that is pretty much to use in every form of sword martial arts and is basically done in every single movie with a sword. Nothing special.
