Love this movie. One of the better of the early movies of this genre.
McMinnville Oregon is now the home of Howard Hughes "Spruce Goose" at the Evergreen Air and Space Museum.
Most special Memories are the Mystery of This Island Earth. Mostly by Mystery Science Theater 3000. Really, both viewings are good. It's a good 50s era SciFi movie and it's absolutely Hilarious on MST3000.
This Island Earth had a lot of influence with Gene Roddenberry when he began writing Star Trek. The upper decks exterior of the Enterprise, and the Star Fleet triangle, are both taken from space ship shapes in this movie. Rex Reason from this movie later starred in the Star Trek episode "Bread and Circuses".
Sounds like you had access to a copy of "The Saucer Fleet" for research! You hit all the same obscure details.
Honestly, my recollection of this movie was loving the first act, then feeling disappointed by the end…the setup was better than the payoff.
