    there likely will never be another as great in this genre as Errol Flynn, he was quite amazing, just look around at the ones who tried and failed to fill his place as a swashbuckler

      Basil Rathbone was a far, far greater swordsman (up to Olympic level) - he could have taken out Flynn a million times, but the script always made him the baddie - and therefore Flynn had to be choreographed to win.

    At 4:22 the golfer in the back was Harold Lloyd, (unrecognizable to many without his trademark glasses) close friend of Doug Fairbanks Sr., and neighbor in Beverly Hills. Fairbanks was an established star in silent films doing romantic comedies and a few westerns, BEFORE he turned to costume dramas and swashbuckling. Marrying Mary Pickford, Hollywood's first female superstar only increased his fandom. He also was popular for joining Chaplin and Pickford during 1917 to 1919 doing Liberty Bond tours and rallies to support the USA in WW I.

    • @wiseguymaybe
      @wiseguymaybe Před 3 lety +2

      Errol knew how to fence and defeat Basil on screen every time, but in real life Basil was the expert. Rathbone was twice the British Army Fencing Champ and could have easily taken Flynn in a real fencing match. Not to take away from Errol's skills as a fencer. He was a very talented swordman, when he was sober.

    Just a mention of Tyrone Power? Come on! Basil Rathbone, being a well known fencer in his right, was asked how well Tyrone Power did in their scenes ("The Mark of Zorro", 1940) in which stunt doubles were not used. Rathbone responded: "Tyrone Power could fence Errol Flynn into a cocked hat!! Thanks!
