Adam is being very political and can't say what he really wants to say. We know why they gave it to Mary Earps, they want to shine a light on the women's game. They knew if they had Leon Edwards and Jude Bellingham in the 6 she's not winning it. Men have to endure more to win medals or trophies in their respective sports. Globally no one even knows her.

The BBC show women's football and not golf, horse racing etc which is why another ladies footballer won Spoty this year. The award has been totally belittled given some of the legends who have previously won it. What an irrelevance it has become the same as Question of Sport which the Beeb have ruined by getting a guy who knows nothing about sport to present it.
It's because it's cheap TV for them. They can delude themselves into thinking the BBC is still the flagship for 'football' and still keep the majority of Licence Fee money in-house to pay themselves all huge undeserving salaries.

Can't understand how/why people still overlook Leon. He's a sound male role model during an era in which we're bombarded by endless characters with no integrity. So many misguided people could learn from Rocky. His values, personality, and story are full of positive qualities. The kind of qualities we ought to instil in the youth. Legend 💪❤

How on earth has Jonathan Haggerty not got a nomination, he's just won 2 One world titles at two different sports. Muay Thai and Kickboxing. Amazing achievement beating some of the best in the world but not even a nomination. It feels like the bbc ignore mma and combat sports that aren't boxing. In Asia he'd be a national hero.

I totally agree but anyone apart from muay thai mma fans wouldn't have a clue who he is. That's why it's important for them to get nominations at least to bring more eyes to the sport, just like leon n mma , they both did probably the hardest sports to become champions in the elitest orgs n comps against the best fighters.

The idea that there aren’t political agendas being pushed is crazy - you think Djokovic will get near to the overseas sportsman of the year after the whole ‘jab debacle’ of the past year or so…

Leon also trained in UK, didn’t have to go to America to train like bisping did.
There’s no obvious criteria for this but I don’t understand how athlete that didn’t win anything comes out on top. Shouldn’t you reward champions. Made sense last year Because of euros but this year won nothing
"didn't go to America" What's your point? Bisping trained in the UK and only went over after he was fighting regularly in the UFC. And the only reason the UK has coaches/gyms, funding at that elite level is BECAUSE of Bisping. But the only Earps thing, it is strange but it's a public vote so what can you do. Tbh all the nominations were shoddy.

It means absolutely nothimg. The amount of times the winners havent even bothered turning up to collect the award. But no one cares in reality.

Its a panel of judges from various walks of life. Ex-sports people and journalists. The nominees were announced on 12 December... Leon's defence in Vegas wasn't until December 16th.
So you'd be nominating him based on one fight this year where he beat Usman, with the potential of winning a few days later. 🤷♂
Bisping never got any recognition outside of the core fans when he became the first British champ either. When these men achieve amazing things in one of the toughest sports there is, they deserve to be recognised.

Well said Adam lad! Flying the flag for MMA to a more mainstream audience. UFC is a niche sport for sure but what Leon has achieved over the last few years has to be recognised by the people doing the shortlists for this kind of thing. For me he should win hands down with Jude coming a close second.

Never heard of Leon Edwards (I have no interest in MMA) but Adam put forward a good argument for him to at least be nominated, sounds like he achieved a lot this year.
I personally think Lucy Charles Barclay should also have been nominated. Great win at Kona! Another niche sport but to finally win after finishing second four times and also coming back from several injuries. It was a great win and a brilliant example of a never say die attitude.

Didn't the BBC have a deal with Bellator(MMA organisation that competed directly with UFC)? Probably one of the reasons its easy to ignore Leon in this instance. Not saying its right, just that its easy for the BBC, especially over here in the UK. Lets face it, the majority of UK BBC viewership wont be interested in headkicks and rear naked chokes. Not when they are use to Doctor Who, Mary Berry and SCD. BBC SPOTY is a nothing contest globally, so Leon shouldnt lose much sleep.
Bellator and UFC aren't really rivals. The difference is massive between the two. It's a bit like saying the SPL is a rival for the Prem
@@connorfrost195 Both were competing MMA companies from America for a while. Obviously Bellator have recently merged with PFL. They definitely competed with each other not so long ago, (Bader, Benson Henderson, Fedor etc) but the word "rivals" was never used

I was explaining why a television network might not do due diligence on all MMA companies, in a country where the sport is still relatively niche. Especially amongst a large portion of the BBC viewership. There have been many organisations that have been and gone that competed with the UFC. It doesnt mean that they overtook them. I was asking could the deal the BBC and Bellator conflict with naming or acknowledging UFC fighters, or MMA fighters in general in their SPOTY nominations? Or might it be that it just does not resonate with the regular UK audience? Different Football and Basketball leagues have a head start in terms of history + popularity, but the quality between each league doesnt mean they dont(or didn't )compete against each other in terms of pure business. Not winning or profits, just the marketplace in general, over quite a few years. No one argue's that the UFC is where the eyes are in terms of popularity. The question was about the BBC and why why didn't choose to nominate Leon.

I don't even bother reading BBC sports anymore, especially BBC football. The reason for this is that the football section is awash with articles about the women's game, of which I have no interest. The standard of football that I've seen from the women's game, both at the World Cup and Euro's isn't great, in fact it is embarrassing. I'm with Joey Barton on this one. As for Mary Earps 'winning' SPOTY. She did not 'win' anything, she was gifted the award and chosen for meeting a certain set of criteria which has less to do with sport and more to do with a weak political agenda.

Respecting the BBC an giving the SPOTY award any credibility anymore is where we go wrong. A champion in the toughest sport in the world doesn’t need recognition from the BBC. Let them stick to Tennis etc
