    Thanks for visiting the Freshcutky organic gardening channel. This channel focuses on my journey, as I work to build my own cut flower farm. In the garden, I will answer some of the most common "gardening for beginners" type questions I get. Growing greens and beautiful food is something I'm really passionate about. Thank you for joining me as I learn to grow flowers, vegetables, and more.

    Many ornamental flowers are TOXIC. ALWAYS do your own research and take responsibility for the plants that you introduce around your kids and pets. Use common sense, etc.

    NAME: Bachelor's Buttons, also known as Cornflower
    HOW: Easy to direct sow. Easy to germinate using the winter sowing method.
    WHEN: In my garden, the best results come from seeds that were direct sown in fall (at the end of September). The seeds germinate and seedlings survive the winter. Some seedlings are lost during the winter, and will vary depending upon how cold and harsh your winter is. My seedlings survived a few nights down to 8F, with some damage - but were able to recover. They were also briefly covered in snow. Overwintering results will definitely vary from garden to garden.
    Seeds can also be direct sown as soon as soil can be worked in the spring. Succession plantings allow for a longer bloom time, but the flowers seem to fizzle out once the temperatures get too hot. In my garden, the plants from direct sowing in spring are noticeably smaller than those direct sown in the fall.

      +Petals on the Paving Slabs Thanks for watching! These are always one of my favorites. I think it's because it's always one of the first flowers to bloom after the long winter.

    I bought the seeds for these flowers from Botanical Interests. The blue and black variety... packaging on both states the flowers are edible but that the petals are tastier than the whole flower head. Will try em.

      +debcarsonart Awesome! I think I've seen some wedding cakes that use the petals as decoration. Thanks so much for watching, I really appreciate it! Happy growing! :)

    I just cut off top of the stalk because the main stem on my cornflower was super thick. Like thumb thick. A lot thicker than I have seen online. So I in a way pinched them to encourage lateral growth because I was afraid it was going to be top heavy or only a few flowers and all stem. Was this a bad idea? And anyone had success propegating cornflower plants from cuttings??

      They're cool season flowers that grow best when it isn't hot outside. You could try, but I'm not so sure they would grow well. Good luck!

    Where do you get all these colours from? I can only find blue and purple and pink. Not the multicouloured white and pink.

      +JennieCandyKitty I always put that disclaimer out there because I want people to know what they're growing. A lot of things are toxic, but in the case of bachelors buttons, I've seen the petals used as garnishes in salads. :)

    I have planted a few in a seed starter. they have stopped growing and started to just lay down. :( I'm afraid to plant them outside yet because it still freezes at night. will they do well in a pot?

    • @TONYAwiththeflowers
      @TONYAwiththeflowers  Před 7 lety +1

      +Lupy Lady SLE Hi! Welcome to the channel! I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say they're laying down, but my best guess would be that it's time to plant them out. Bachelor's buttons are extremely cold hardy. I plant mine in fall and the little seedlings over winter with no problem. Sometimes they get covered in snow; sometimes it gets as cold as 8F. I'm assuming you started the seed indoors? If so, I think it would definitely be important to harden them off, so they can get used to the temp variations and sunlight. Ive never tried to grow them in a pot, but my first instinct is that they would do well. I'm so sorry I wasnt able to offer more help! Good luck! :)

    I had one volunteer in my yard, then it reseeded and came back and the third year there were thousands of them!! I let some of them dry and picked them and just sprinkled out of the pods onto the ground no weeding the area, digging up soil, they loved it and I now have them alllllll over the place they are very prolific and had three foot or more blooms the second year! I do nothing, no water, no fertilizer nothing, they are the easiest I know but beware they like TO TRAVEL!!

    • @TONYAwiththeflowers
      @TONYAwiththeflowers  Před 7 lety

      +Christine Fry Yes, very true! If you let them go to seed, they will freely plant themselves everywhere! 😀🌱🐝

    • @TONYAwiththeflowers
      @TONYAwiththeflowers  Před 5 lety +1

      I never prune them, but I do snip off the spent blooms to make sure that they keep blooming as long as possible.
