Petrucci: "So I wrote a little thing on this 7 string"
Funny thing is, Jordan came up with that riff 😅
Yup
8 string now
After Images & Words, I struggled for a long time to love Awake because of the 7 string. I’m still not a fan of the sound of extended range guitars, unless they are extended higher! 😀
Now you got to listen to "A Nightmare to Remember." The piano intro will raise the hair on your neck.
And stay for the Beautiful Agony part.
@paullowder7932 some of the most beautiful and sad guitar playing in any of their songs. The tensions Petrucci brings out pull your heartstrings.
STRONG second on A Nightmare to Remember, one of my all time favorites
@@paullowder7932 the beautiful agony part is so fucking awesome. Some of my favorite chordprogressions and melodies in that part. Really beautiful stuff.
I love Systematic Chaos. Underrated album and this song is nasty. Love the riff at the end.
I wouldn’t say that. It’s a pretty popular album with most fans nowadays
My first DT album. Then I worked my way back to the start.
Dream theater is just a polarizing band. Just one of the things about making progressive music lol
Second Best DT Album, This Whole Band Is Underrated
The solo at the end is played on the Haken Continuum, the same "keyboard without real keys" Jordan starts Octavarium with
He's still needs to watch the live show with the orchestra
@@epnlvr9790 if you're talking about Octavarium live, Doug already reviewed it
Yup
@@epnlvr9790he already did
@@epnlvr9790of octavarium? I thought he did already.
Pale Blue Dot from Distance Over Time is another metal masterpiece from Dream Theater.
This is what it would sound like if Frank Zappa got into metal.
FRANK FRIDAYS!!
I was blessed to have front row seats at a small, local theater that they came to in 2015. Sat with my jaw on the floor for the entire 3 hour show. They didn't miss a single note. Those guys are amazing, full stop.
Best 7 string riff ever, simple as that.
Here's a surprise, Jordan came up with that one.
Nothing beats Blind.
The outro riff has always been my favorite DT riff. I don’t care how simple it is, it’s so devastating
@@kristianm.6946 the intro or the instrumental section?
"It's gotta have balls!" - Mike Portnoy on this entire album
Came for the Dream Theater, stayed for the Doug! Love you guys!
This must be Doug's arch nemesis of a song. Most double kick drummy one of Dream Theater. Its also got the same weird dark screaming voice like from Count of Tuscany😂
This song is just completely NUTS!!! Metallica and Megadeth are great but this is just a LEGENDARY full on metal masterpiece.
and the solo is Slayer but better and on turbo steroids
Couldn't have said it any better myself
The outro is just such a great example of so many things. Leaving their best riff for the end. Mike Portnoy’s feel for how to just keep the song driving forward.
I agree, and as much as I love Mangini, I don't love how he played the ending of this song live. He kicked up the tempo too early IMO.
Might be my all-time favorite DT song. If I were a Major League Baseball player, this song would be my walk-up music, lol. Can you imagine this opening riff through a stadium PA?
I would hear The Glass Prison, 6:00, and Metropolis Part 1 played at San Antonio Spurs games sometime back. I'm not sure if they still do.
@@alanalanis2257 The guy who played the music for the Spurs was a member of the Mike Portnoy forum. He was super chill
@@mposh I recall getting to pick/vote on tunes that got dropped during the Finals a few times. Funny stuff
That rag time piano gets me EVERY time and I love it
AWAKE!!!!!!!!!!! When??
Hell yeah, best album they ever did 🤟🏻
@@Devypocalypsehmm that’s SFAM for me 🤘🏻
I'm begging for a "Space dye vest" reaction for aeons... Hopefully soon 😅🤟🏻🤟🏻
@@Devypocalypse Great choice. IMO that was the band's creative peak, before the shifted into Zappa-meets-Broadway-meets-alternative metal mode
@@ak47dragunov absolutely, I love them up to and including 'Octavarium' but afterwards a lot of it has descended into Jordan Vs Petrucci wank offs that needs a serious producer to tell them to be more focused.
Ministry of lost souls please!!!
Can't wait for the gig in London in October.
YESSS !!! It's been a long time
"Hollow years" live at Budokan would be a great next choice!
Doug, next maybe you can try (outcry) great song with beautiful lyrics and instruments. ❤
I’m backing this. Outcry would be epic
Dream Theater is the best what happened to metal music
Hey doug! I was wondering if you would ever check out Kings X. Dream theater hasn’t done many collaborations on their songs but they actually have dUg pinnick (singer and bassist of Kings X) on backing vocals in the song “Lines in the Sand” off of their album “Falling Into Infinity.” Personally i would recommend the song “Out of the Silent Planet” or “Goldilox” by Kings X, very interesting stuff, they are sometimes credited for creating grunge alongside the band The Melvins
Agreed
I love this freaking song! I've seen them do it live a few times. Phenomenal!
Was worried that you might not like this one. Seeing that you've become such a big DT fan really warms my heart. Gonna catch them in November for the 6th time, can't wait. Having Portnoy back after all these years will be magical.
Already got my ticket for DT on December here in Argentina...can't wait! I'd really love to hear this one live, it's one of my favorites from them, such a crazy song!
Nice, me too. I'm waiting for December to see DT again.
PLEASE do Bar Stool Warrior from Distance over Time (2019). Great album!!
This was, as far as I can remember, the first DT song I ever heard. I was immediately hooked.
The album isn't done, certain parts are done. Guitar and drums are done, maybe bass too. Keys are being done right now I believe and then vocals beginning of July.
The new album, yes keys are being tracked and James does vocals last. Then mix and mastering. It’ll be out before their 40th tour in September im sure
The solo from JP here is on the list of the 100 best guitar solos of all time, don't quite remember which spot.
Although, this record is way far from the rest of the others, I definitely put my hands on the fire for The Dark Eternal Night..... It's just unbelievable.
The final part was improvised by Jordan on the continuum fingerboard which has already gave us quite some madness, especially during Octavarium.
By the way I already got my ticket for the Argentina Gig and it will be the fourth time seeing them play and it's gonna be monumental
Got my ticket already
You'll absolutely love Ministry of Lost Souls from this album!
Great review Doug. I've just got tickets to see their London gig in late October.
That Rudess' improvised solo at the end with the continumm is something of other World... ✊✊✊
Great song with that central section that is really out of this world. Waiting for a Doug's reaction to "SPACE DYE VEST", mandatory on piano, the last masterpiece from their 1st keyboard player Kevin Moore 🎹🎶🤟🏻
I love this song and I listened it 100s of times, but when I see you reaction to it somehow takes me back to my own first listen.
I’m curious how someone like Beethoven or Mozart would react to their music?🤔
Doug how pumped are you for the new/old DT NEW record with Mike portnoy
Finally!!! Have mentioned this tune on here a few times. Portnoy also on vocals
I genuinely believe you would love what you see in modern Beatbox compositions. Time changes, genre shifts, vocal technique, it's all there.
River, Hiss, Colaps, and Gene are all strong starting points. Especially Metamorphosis, Find my Way, and Middle of the Rhythm
I would love to see Doug's take on Ministry of Lost Souls
You should take a look at the ministry of lost souls from this same album, it’s amazing
Great reaction as always, thank you Doug! You should definitely do A Nightmare To Remember... incredible song writing!
One of my favorite DT songs!
Nothing screams 'Egyptian Pharaoh" like ragtime LOL
It's because the story the song is based on is during the 20s or 30s. Lovecraft short story, I think it's called Nyaralothep or something like that
@@ApplecornflakesOR they just love to add stylistic changes a lot which has happened before too
I love the sextuplet double kick in the guitar solo section. I think he also offsets it to the offbeat in the second sextuplet double kick section. Mindfuck!
I think I also hear some whole tone scale runs and diminished stuff. So amazing!
this was one of the first songs they performed when they came to Manila, cleanly transitioned to enter sandman during a chorus and just went back to finish the song like it was nothing.
This riff is one of their best!
You've heard The Ministry of Lost Souls if you went to a View concert.
Great reaction, un saludo desde Buenos Aires Argentina 👋
oh didn't know they already finished the album, well that was to be expected :D
I adore Systematic Chaos
Writer: What opportunities gives you the seven-string guitar?
John: Just more notes!
Gotta listen to Panic Attack next
New album metropolis pt. 3. It has to be!
Dear Doug, uf you get to read this react to the full album from Yngwie Malmsteen, CONCERTO SUITE. Yngwie wrote all the classical orchestra from Checoslovakia and is the electric guitar soloist. It aa a MASTERPIECE. Right up your alley.
17th November, Leganes (Madrid-Spain). Got my tickets!
Suertudo 🤘
you definitely need to check any song of mors principium est band, the melodies on that one are delightful, greetings!
You should listen to The Glass Prison, from Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Hey Doug, thanks for all the great content on your channel. I'd love to see you react to something from Translatlantic (with Mike Portnoy), maybe All of the Above or Suite Charlotte Pike
Классный альбом!
The lyrics actually quote H.P. Lovecraft's short story Nyarlathotep, published in 1920
Next should be THE MINISTRY OF LOST SOULS
6:15-6:17 slayer-esque riff
Genius song of the genius band❤
A great reaction again! But, was wondering if you could have a look at a Welsh band called Man. Prog rock/ West Coast Rock genres. Their track "Bananas" from the their album "Be Good to Yourself at Least Once a Day" would be a good place to start. I'm biased as I'm from Scottish/Wales.
This album was the first time I saw them live on tour back in 2007, in Texas. The album is solid overall and In the Presence of Enemies is my favorite track on it but this one would be second. I can get why some don’t like maybe because of the vocals and the vocal effect they have on them. Quintessential “heavy DT” though if you liked their “Train of Thought” album though.
There are so many epic DT songs out there that sometimes shorter songs get lost in the shuffle. Let me suggest "Forsaken" off this same album for a reaction. It is a more straight forward piece or as straight forward as Dream Theater can be....
Ugh not a fan of that one on the album. Prophets of War is a better choice
This song has always messed with my head
Hello Doug ! Thank you so much.
PLEASE TRY TO LISTEN TO "Seventh Dimension", the album is "Black Sky". This band is moving in other dimension of music. AMAZING
"Into more of a straight meter"...Ha! No way says Dream Theater
Famous last words
Planet x Atlantis Part 1. (Apocalypse 1470 B.C.) PLEASEEEEE¡¡¡¡¡¡
Planet X is uber tier Prog
Or potentially Alien Hip Hop
Into a little bit more of a straight meter.
We all knew that wasn’t gonna last long.
I find it weird that we would need to bring ear protection, Petrucci put so much time into crafting his tone, only to have the front of house engineer destroying it. My previous DT concerts pre-covid were perfect. No ear plugs needed, it was loud but I would describe Petrucci's tone there as immense, not over-bearing.
Corrosion of conformity is awesome
Did he say John Petrucci on keyboards?
Yeah…Cinema Nightmare in a different universe
I suggest listening Arthur Verocai 1972 album.
I really reeeeally would love if you reacted to "Meshuggah - by the ton"
Temazo ctm
Congratulations on surviving the Dark Eternal Night!
I like Sacrificed Sons
This is why I remove my socks and pants before I listen to DT. I've lost too many to their riffs blowing them of finto the abyss. It gets expensive buying new clothes all the time!
Surprisingly, I've seen a lot of Dream Theater fans hate on this song. To me, this song and entire album is extremely fun and creative.
If you hate on this song you’re not a real Dream Theater fan 😂 I said what I said!
Hey Doug ,correct me if I'm wrong, but you haven't listen or react to any song from the Awake album. "A Mind Beside Itself" and specially "Space-Dye Vest" are waiting for you.
You should do a KISS song at some point
Please you should react to “jimmy” by tool 🙏
Mudvayne intro riff 💯🤘 I always liked heavier DT
Next ...A nightmare to remember
Would love for you to react to Hinds Hall by Macklemore!
Doug you need to know that Rudess solo at the end is improvisation band decided to leave on the record.
You should do a review on All of the above by Transatlantic :))
Finally Dream Theater..
And the metronome was destroyed😅
One of the greatest album of all time.. and probably the hardest album to cover ever as well...
Eh I wouldn’t say that
This is the top of their game.
They peaked before this I believe
Just Watched your Pat Metheny video, first time finding your channel!
Now, go listen and react to

Please React to Kalki 2898ad trailer😊
Maybe something didn't get clicked during the upload, but this video does not appear in my Subscriptions feed.
Me too.
IMHO not "all the musical ideas" but "one idea in every variation " 😅
It is double kick not single
