    Even though you said they have been out for a while, I have never heard of them, those things are COOL! Really digging your videos!

    Thanks for the tip on the furnace tape. I also have several rolls and it really beats the cost of reflective tape. Have you tried a white paint marker?

    I bought this same unit from Harbor Freight yesterday (July 10, 2023). I wanted to use it to verify the engine speed on a diesel powered electrical generator. The most accessible location to the rotating equipment was at a cage fan between the engine and the generator. I affixed a strip of the reflective tape provided in the box with the tachometer to one of the fan blades. This seemed a good spot to measure the rotation because the tape was within 2 inches of the light of the tachometer. The result was not believable and very erratic, jumping back and forth between 18,000 and 21,000 rpm. Hypothesizing that reflections off of the other fan blades might be reflecting light that confused the tachometer, I then applied some aluminized furnace tape to the smooth surface of the engine out shaft. This put the tape at a little over seven inches from the light of the tachometer, which according to the specs on the packaging of the unit was near the maximum limit of the optical tachometer. Also, there were some bolts sticking out that rotated with the engine and offered obstructions to a view of the shaft. However, after much adjusting of where I held the tachometer, I finally found a sweet spot where the tachometer read a steady and believable 1700 rpm. My assessment of this Cen-Tech Digital Photo Sensor Tachometer is that its optical function is crude and imprecise. No operating instructions were provided with my unit. This video was somewhat helpful in showing how it's supposed to function, but does not provide any illustration of how to use the "memory" button on the front of the unit under the display. If you have a simple application where there is clear and close access to the rotating part, this unit may meet your need. It did mine, but only after much fiddling and experimentation. If you don't know approximately what reading you should be getting, you may accept a reading that is totally wrong.

    Would the width, size, or length of the tape skew the RPM reading? Bascially, is it reading how many times the tape passes or does it read how fast the tape section rotates? IDK if my question makes sense.

    • @1D10CRACY
      @1D10CRACY  Před 2 lety

      Width and size doesn't matter. It is only counting how many times it passes in a given time. I usually just use about a centimeters worth

    in the case of the grinder wheel does it make much difference if your dot is close to center or out at circumference.

      Don't the inside and outside spin at the same speed?

    • @tehKap0w
      @tehKap0w Před 3 lety +1

      @davidgriffin14 indeed, for a solid body, distance from the center is irrelevant when counting Revolutions Per Minute =)

      The distance the outter part of the wheel is greater and so is its speed ..

    What the heck are ALL THESE READINGS?
    I just purchased one of these earlier today, to (like you) check the PTO speed on my tractor.
    (I need to set the governor/max speed)
    I unboxed it, installed the batteries, stuck a strip of the enclosed tape on my over-run clutch and fired up the tractor. I pointed the beam as best I could, the went to read the readings.
    WTH? They are all over the place. The "Minimum" was greater than the Max, and some reading have decimal points while others do not. I ran about four tests, and I simply have NO IDEA what I'm seeing.
    Here are the "saved " numbers from the last attempt: (Run at full throttle
    1) Photo RPM = 10,764 (REALLY? It's a TRACTOR, Not a motorcycle!)
    2) Min Photo RPM = 868.4 (That MAY be about correct...
    3) Max Photo RPM = 15, 870 (WOW! Who knew?)
    Any thoughts? Or is this just typical ?

      mine is all over the place too. one of the batteries is like 1.27 volts. might go buy some new ones and try again but doubt that is it. seems like i could just pick an rpm randomly
