Great video, part 1 and 2 are very informative. As well as your other xs videos. The carbs off my recently purchased 77 xs650 have a groove worn into the body of the carb from the throttle butterfly. Before I put more time and money into these carbs will they ever run well with that groove? It’s almost a 1/4 way around. Can this and should this be repaired?
Tom thanks for the feedback glad the videos were helpful. The short answer to your question is yes......and no...... I'm sure that they will run fine because you can compensate for the tiny bit of extra air caused by the groove by adjusting the butterfly gap at idle on the worn carb and also the mixture screw. That said you are going to struggle to get the idle on that cylinder perfect at low idle revs like 1000rpm but who wants a perfect idle eh? If the idle is a little bit lumpy and you cannot improve it despite all your adjustments and settings then slightly increase the idle speed until the idle is fast enough to cancel out any slight lumpiness at idle. At anything above idle the groove is likely to make negligible difference but give them a clean and try it they can always be a spare set whilst you clean another better set of carbs if you buy some. Thanks for your prompt reply. I’ll try them. The cost of a replacement set is considerably higher than a couple jet kits.
