Because I started backpacking with my oldest child(9 years old) I’ve been carrying more gear. I use the durston z-mid 2p, thermorest short pad for her, ov quilt(best quilt I’ve ever owned). Due the hauling more gear I use the mystery ranch bridger 65L it hauls heavier weight like a champ. A couple more years and she will be carrying more gear but for now she carries her sleeping bag, layers and some of her water. Thanks for the video.
My favourite back packing gear is my alton goods titanium grill. My tradition when I head outback is to have a huge cattleman's cuttlet cooked over hot coals. Gets me through the backpacking meals to follow. Oh that would be a cowboy cutlet in the US I think.
love watching these videos. interesting to see that backpacking concepts haven't really changed much in my 30+ years of hiking, but the gear keeps getting better and lighter. would be interesting to see a cost breakdown. we all want to drive a lambo but the cost/benefit ratio isn't always there.

In the case you already have other backpacks with similar UL backpack design (one big body, 2 side pockets for bottles, 1 front mesh pocket) and volume, do you prefer the Unbound or one of the others? (And why? 😉) Thanks
As far as ul packs I’ve used the waymark evlv, HMG Porter, southwest, and junction. I like all the features of the unbound, but the one thing I don’t like is the main body is a bit narrower then the other HMG packs so the pack is taller yet less wide, given 40 L capacity. I would prefer if they kept it the same width, but it’s a personal preference. They did that I believe to give better weight distribution. They have a new pack called the elevate, but it’s only 22 L. If they could make that 30 or 35 I think that would be my ultimate UL pack

I’m considering the Unbound 55 for 2-5 night trips with mix of trail hiking and snow\mountaineering. Also considering the Gregory Targhee Fast Track 45 and Gregory Focal 58.
Yes i can give some thoughts. I do think The unbound can serve as a lightweight mountaineering pack. While they dont have a ice axe loop, they incorporated daisy chain loops on the necessary spots so you can add your own, which you can see i have done on my pack. For holding a helmet, that can be done by clipping it to the front loop just under the front stretch pocket. As far as rope carry, the y-strap on top can do that sufficiently, but it might dangle on the sides. There are some bungee compression straps that you could stuff it under and it could work. However, my main concern would be the weight. Since this pack only has one frame stay, i would not load it with any more then 35 lbs. If you need to go more then that because of the equipment i would go with a pack with two frame stays, like the porter. Hope that helps. I will have a full review vid soon on this pack that can go into more detail and show what im talking about, so be on the look out for that.
yes, its a ointment you rub on your feet, that helps heal and prevent blisters, dry cracked heels, athletes foot and in-grown toe nails and cuts. Its all natural as well. I got wet feet on a hike and developed athlete foot over as few days, and got a ingrown nail. This stuff helped accelerate the healing and if i feel hot spots coming i will rub a bit of this on it and put some lukotape over it. So this stays in my bag.
I got a whole vid on it coming up in a few weeks but here are a few pros and cons. The side pockets are great and can fit a more and it’s easier to get out water bottles. The snack pocket on the bottom make it easier to access snacks and you can eat while you hike. I really like the stretch front pocket too. It can fit a lot yet conceal your stuff. Seams on the outside and taped when is more waterproof then previous packs. Cons; it narrows near the top so you can put more in the bottom then u can at the top which limits putting a bear canister in it so would have strap it on top. Where the sw and junction is one even tube. Also on stay in the back as opposed to 2 so when u have a heavy load the weight could feel not as distributed to your hips as the others.

Thanks for the kind words. I really do enjoy it. There are some pros and cons to it but the pros out weigh the cons. I love the bigger pockets and allows me to access my water bottles a lot easier then my southwest and junction. I also love the food pocket on the bottom. Allows me to access my days worth of food with out having to put down my pack. The only thing I don’t like is it is a bit narrower and taller the the 40L junction and southwest. I wish it was the same width. I’ll be doing a full review vid on it soon, so be on the look out for it

I have a very similar load out - BUT, i can barely fit my UGQ 20 deg quilt in the large HMG Pod. Sounds like you can fit your entire sleep system. HOW? My quilt is the extended length so that may take up the extra space.
Yes, Its a tight fit but my quilt is regular size not extended in a size that might be why you can’t do it. What I Try to do is I’ll zip the pod a quarter of the way, stuff it, zip a little bit more, then stuff the rest. that seems to help me get everything in
The bearikade has to strap to the top, but i can fit it in vertically if I don’t take a change of cloths, but the pack will be tall. My bear vault 425 fits inside fine though
My double rainbow li got smothered to the ground in the Winds. I had all 4 corner stakes under multiple heavy rocks it just couldn't handle the wind blowing down or under it. Broke 3 sections of the carbon fiber pole. I've just realized the trekking pole tents are superior at shedding serious wind and snow. I bought the double rainbow li under the impression that it is made in the us but its not, so there's that too.
if i expect winds i always guy out the center pole. i have had it in severe storm winds and no breakage. If you need a more rubust pole, you can get the regular Double rainbow pole and it gives it more rstability and support. As far as trekking pole tent, i would say that depends. If it is a tipi style like hmg mids then yes i agree, but if its like the duplex i disagree. ive had that in winds and it doesnt hold a candle to the double rainbow
@@BackcountryRenegade it was in wind River mountains. 60 mph winds. We had ,4 free standing tents 3 were big Agnes, the tarptent held up longest before being smothered to the ground. Wind was primarily blowing down on the tent or sides. My durston x mid 2p had no problem in the same exact spot a couple of years before. And yes a duplex may not be the best design, x mid allows you to pitch it almost flush with the ground so it works pretty well in high winds if you are pitching in a flat spot.
Carry a fixed blade dude, they are very lite if you know what to buy. Look up raineier fastpak or a more premium knife "ug tools tiNy" the best of the best hollow titanium handle as strong as full tang ridiculously lite best fixed blade for hikers on planet earth. Both extremely light and functional but the fastpack is hapf the price. You don't need it, till you need it. I don't really get how other ul hikers don't foresee a scenario where you might have to defend yourselves, from wild animals or god forbid.. wild bipeds
Doesn't anyone care about using soft plastic waterbottles such as Smartwater bottles which contain harmful plastic polymers such as BPA, and specifically state they are single use only?
I just found out about the plastic particles through a company who sent me some jackets to review that uses all eco friendly products so now im more aware will play more of a factor in my new load out. What are you using instead?

I would loose that spinning set up and go with a Tenkara rod. Check out Dragontail.

I’m 5’7 , 140 lbs it fits pretty good I’m in between a small and med but found the med to be a bit less comfortable.
