  • In this Video, We unravel the fascinating stories behind the 5 New York Families + Some of the other Powerful and intriguing Families and Bosses on The Commission....
In the Godfather, we meet the notorious don Vito Corleone, the head of the most powerful mafia family in the country. At this time, the mafia was at its peak, and were generating billions of dollars.
In New York, there were specifically 5 families who had complete control over the city and ruled with an iron fist, carving up a piece for each of the bosses. These bosses would set up fronts to hide their true activities with everything from operating wall street investment firms, restaurants, hotels to Olive oil companies.
The five families in the film were, the Corleone Family headed by Vito Corleone. The Barzini family headed by Emilio Barzini. The Cuneo Crime family founded by Carmine Cuneo. The Stracci family headed by Anthony Stracci. And lastly the Tattaglia family headed by Philip Tattaglia.
The five families all have a fascinating backstory, amazingly crafted by Mario Puzo in which he based on the real 5 crime families of New York.
Even though we don’t see them except in the meeting scene, they all have an intriguing and rich backstory that you will definitely want to know about.
So in this video, we will uncover the fascinating backstories and hidden details about the immensely powerful five families of New York.

Barzini never wanted anything to do with a "commission". He still carried the old Sicilian belief that ruling all NYC as the "Capo di Tutti Capi" was the only legitimate expression of Cosa Nostra. The Solozzo Affair was his final gambit to enact this. He waited until Vito Corleone grew old and complacent, and then he manipulated Virgil Solozzo and the Tattaglias into a war that would undo the peace just so he could label the Commission a failure, and return to the old ways. Thus, absorbing the remains and re-ordering everyone in it into his new Barzini empire as the Boss of Bosses once and for all.
He gave himself away at the Commission meeting where peace was made between the Tattaglias and Corleones by placing himself at the head of the table during the opening remarks. That's a no-no in Cosa Nostra.
Commission meetings are supposed to be held at roundtables to symbolize everyone having equal input. Being the head of the table was what the old timers from Sicily fought over. That one slip up confirmed to Vito that Barzini still hadn't put his ambitions to bed after all these years, despite his promises otherwise, and that he was still seeking total control of NYC's five families.

This film format while great is now outdated. The movies had a slow pace that let you see the background activities more clearly and the family feuds that took place. I agree, but modern Hollywood would do to the story what they did to Ghostbusters, Star Wars, and Scooby Doo. Turn it into woke dog doo. The mob bosses would be depicted as stupid, racist white men, who couldn't do anything without their wives, who are stunning and strong wamen who don't need no man. The families themselves would be chock full of representation, with mobsters from Asia, Africa, South America and India all having been made. Then there would be Cunio's non-binary Consigliere and Strachi's gender fluid Underboss. No, my friend. The days of Hollywood epics are long over. Just pray they don't remake this classic with Seth Rogan cast as Vito.

Killing the head don doesn’t necessarily mean the destruction of the entire family. I totally understand taking out Philip Tattaglia since the underboss Bruno Tattaglia was already executed, the family was weakened and the Corleones could basically absorb the entire organization. I have a question about a deleted scene.
In the first Godfather movie Vito says to get his sons together so they can visit the former Conciliary in the hospital in his death bed. The sons that go with him are Vito's three biological sons and his actual godson. But no Tom Haygan. Why is that? Tom is the new Conciliary and one would think he was also close to the former.
I think this sets up how Micheal sees Tom and how he was able to coldly tell Tom he was "out". Even though Tom was adopted by the family he still wasn't fully considered a part of the family. He just wasn't all the way in that inner circle.
In the scene (this was actually in the movie) Tom makes the statement "I was as much as a son to him as you were" to Sonny doesn't verbally reply he just kind of shrugs and before he can reply they are interrupted. Without that deleted scene the shrug could be interpreted was "yeah yer right" but WITH that deleted scene it could be taken as "ehhh...not exactly...".
So why wasn't Tom included in the hospital visit?

    • @billhicks6449
      @billhicks6449 Před 3 lety

The biggest thing to consider when it comes to the commission is seniority can be telling. Usually the commission would get final say on who replaced them, but with only Chicago and Buffalo left to vote besides the Corleone's it would be very easy for Michael to maneuver who he wanted into those positions.
Of course this could cause a Colombo/Gallo type war.

@@joemckim1183 who steps up is usually like emperors of old, he who has the support of the men. By that I mean the vast majority of support and it's likely as not to be a relative of the former boss. And to the commission it was a sign of weakness if you couldn't get the support of your men. They wouldn't confirm you knowing it will probably cause a war in your family. For instance while Michael could, in the eyes of everyone in the Corleone family, do as he wanted with the other five families with Pete and Sal; he never could have taken over if Clemenza or Tessio disapproved. Michael had never run a crew. Michael wasn't a street guy. In that case Michael would be seen as weak so they wouldn't confirm.
So it's kind of a situational feeling out thing. Like the pope saying they get to crown the king because of gods will; as the King reminds the Pope that the church doesn't have standing army; while the people remind both they're the standing army.... God laughing at everyone.
