I don’t think there will be anyone to replace Michael Shannon as General zod, the true emotion he puts into the character is absolutely amazing.
I actually felt bad for Zod. Seeing the planet he loved and was literally bred to protect as nothing more than a halo of space dirt must've hit him hard asf. The raw emotion Shannon was able to convey was unparalleled.

-If you destroy this ship, you destroy Krypton.
-Krypton had its chance.
Not an easy choice. Good job Snyder.
Well, it is an easy choice when he considered what was at stake if he allowed Zod to follow through with his plan. And what kind of connection does Clark even have with Krypton beyond the fact that he was born there? He was raised on Earth with a human family, making Earth his home, not Krypton. So, if Clark has to choose, he obviously chose the planet he called his home, and to hell with trying to rebuild a failed race like the Kryptonians.
It's so dumb. Now that Zod had the codex DNA, he could've left and terraformmed any other planet into a New Krypton, or stayed on Earth and enjoyed his superpowers without terraforming it at all. Choosing to try and terraform Earth - thus having to kill humanity, fight Superman and lose his powers - was the dumbest plan imaginable. There was no reason the rest of Krypton had to die here except that inexplicable choice by Snyder.
Zod said that the foundation had to be built on something, a living planet so terraforming dead planets was useless

@@masterwhopper414 I'm sure supergirl would have supported zod.
@@rohiths3554 I don’t think so, since she’s been on earth too. I think she might have struggled a lot with the question but eventually would choose humans
In my opinion, Shannon’s General Zod is absolutely phenomenal. He’s bred to be a general and to fight to protect his people. That is one theme of the movie. Freedom of choice. Zod does not have that freedom. He was bred to protect krypton and even if he has to kill an entire race to do that, he will.
Zod is a unique and complex antagonist in Man of Steel, I believe he is the best iteration of the character yet. Zod wants nothing to do with having superpowers. He cares not to rule over the humans or flaunt his superiority over anyone. He just wants to bring Krypton back. He doesn't care about Earth or its people and he's not maniacal in his desire to destroy the human race. He doesn't seek to torture or maim anyone for his own self-gratification.... He just wants to get rid of them to make way for a New Krypton.
Even though Zod is genetically bred to behave a certain way, his motivations are extremely relatable nonetheless in terms of longing for home and the comforts of sameness - Zod isn't trying to shake things up by rebuilding Krypton on a lush planet where he could literally reign as a god among insects... He wants his home back. He wants to be normal. He couldn't care less about having superpowers or reveling in being a godlike being. He seeks normalcy - and that makes him far more 3-dimensional than any other interpretation of Zod to date. It's very much the same as Dorothy from Wizard of Oz; Oz may be a great place to visit with a million exciting novelties to enjoy, but there's no place like home - even if it's a bland black & white world.
I agree.
I actually like Zod, tbh. Sure, you can argue about people being genetically engineered from their parents to form specific roles but outside of that, the guy just wants his home back
He and Jor-El wanted the same thing, albeit in their own ways. I sympathized with Zod, tbh, an understandable antagonist.
I like Shannon as an actor a lot and agree this is the best Zod...but don't pretend he isn't emotional or crazy in this movie. His plan to destroy the human race is asanine when with their powers and ships they could easily terraform and colonize mars or venus with far less risk involved. Also don't say they had no risk in attacking earth...a maverick missile knocks Faora out in the battle in small vile, we see in the next movie that a nuke KOs Supes...the human race is NOT defenseless against them. Condsidering Zod has just a a dozen or so Kryptonians left at his disposal and 2 ships to terraform the planet it was ridiculously risky to invade a nuclear civilization. If the humans didn't have Jor-El tell them how to activate the phantom zone drive and send the kryptonians away then we would have just nukes the the whole area once it became clear that Metropolis was totally gone, or nukes the one in the indian ocean since it wasn't near a city...then Zod's plan is done. Also the cloning ship went down from just Supes lasering it a bit, again a nuke or even smaller arms could take it down. Yes the Kryptonians could defend against a lot of that, but we have thousands of nukes, and millions of air to air missiles...and it would only take one to end Zod's whole plan of recreating Krypton.
All of that on top of the fact that they instantly made an enemy of Kal-El, an extremely powerful being who had within him the very thing they needed, so why risk it? Why not just go "Hey Kal-el, we need your DNA and we are going to go colonize Mars. Kal-El would have helped him and they would have had zero risk (well unless the martians from the comics are there, then maybe just colonize venus). So why do what he did? Revenge. Jor-El broke him in the beginning of the movie, Zod was unhinged. He didn't just want to bring back Krypton, he wanted to destroy everything Jor-El cared about. He wanted to unmake Jor-El's plans. Killing Kal-El and destroying the humans was the way to do this.
So no Zod was not acting altruistically from his perspective for his people, he was an unhinged maniac who was even violating his own military programming to take unnecesary risks with his limited resources. Just because he makes some speech in the end about only caring about Krypton doesn't make it true. He wanted to hurt Kal-El and by extension Jor-El.
@@Jake-cm9jj
But could they colonise Mars or Venus?
Zod and his crew have already visited some old kryptonian colony with a world engine and the colony was so desolated they had to use space suits to survive. Which can imply that kryptonian terraforming had it's limitatiins and not every planet can be terraformed into Krypton-like.
Ofcourse, you can say that that colony died because of some naturall disaster, but there is no reason to assume that they could just terraform any planet.
@@griva7018 They didn't have their powers then. In Earth's system they have superman's powers...this opens up a lot of possibilities. They can fly over to a comet or the asteroid belt and push ice and other asteroids with natural resources into mars before they try to terraform it. They could go to venus and create tornados and siphon off all the extra methane and cool the planet, they could terraform WITHOUT the world engine, it is just the icing on the cake.
A whole team of supermans could spin mars back up to a faster rotation and liqify the core to strength its magnetic field to make it like earth. So many possibilities with those powers.
What we see in the movie is a normal air to ground missile knocks Feora out in the smallville battle (though she probably wasn't as powerful as Supes was yet. Not enough sun exposure yet). We see a nuke knock out Supes. They aren't immune to our tech, and we have ALOT of missiles and nukes. Yeah the earth wouldn't be very good for us after an open warfare, and they would probably win in the end, but we would kill some of them, and definitely total their ships which can't get away from the nukes as easy as the individuals could...and if we destroyed the clone ship then their race is over...exactly what Zod didn't want....so knowing our capabilities it was pure stupidity to risk the future of the Kryptonian race on a frontal assault like he did. He was a bad tactician and terrible at resource management.
Considering that they were a highly advanced race, it made no sense that their "greatest general genetically designed to do his job" was as bad at that job as Zod was...so clearly he was mentally unhinged, probably from the death of krypton, or Jor'el's betrayal or something, but either way he was crazed in his behavior and not acting rationally.
Yeah, even as someone who doesn't like MoS that much, Zod was amazing in this movie, definitely the best version of him, I also think the Idea that every being on Krypton is born to fill out a specific purpose and can't stray from that path is interesting.

When Superman says that krypton had its chance, he wasn’t wrong. The Kryptonians destroyed themselves with their own arrogance and hubris and ignored people like Jor El and Dru Zod who, while their visions suffered, both realized that their planet was dying. 0:40 - i like how Zod has desperation and shows weakness. He isnt an infalible enemy. He simply strove to survive.
I genuinely felt sorry for him
Yeah, there is a lot more to Zod than people think, he was just trying to save his race.
A lot of people dont know this, but Earth was the only candidate for terraformation.
1: the World Engine modifies only gravity and atmosphere, it can't modify the orbit, procession or magnetosphere of a planet, so the World Engine can't change the solid core of mars or any other planet's core in the solar system.
2: No other planets are known to Zod/Kryptonians, why else spend 33 years with no planet? Zod's power source was finite and limited. Zod had limited jumps in the Black Zero, and only one chance using the World Engine. If they left Earth there is a chance they would die along with their race.
3: Even if viable planets exist, how to get the scout ship there? They need the scout ship to make Kryptonians (genisis chamber). It doesn't have a phantom drive and doesn't fit the black zero like the World Engine.
4: Without terraforming Earth there was no way for a Kryptonian civilization to work on Earth. Can you imagine Kryptonians with superpowers living with humans? A fight between two Kryptonians can wipe out a whole city.
So it was either Earth or Krypton, couldn't be both.
And Zod was the good guy on Krypton, he tried to take down the corrupt government that was destroying the planet. Thats why Zod was a hero (for Kryptonians). Kal-el was the hero of Earth, Zod was the hero of Krypton.
I think MoS is highly underrated and misunderstood.

Joseph Gold You would be VERY naive to think that governments of the Earth would consider co-existing with a bunch of demigod aliens who even one man is as strong as a nation's entire military. They would capture them, enslave them, and do experiments on them to harness their power. Humans are already guilty of what the Kryptonians haven't done yet, that's why they are so afraid of a stronger spiecies taking over them and die trying to defend their position on Earth.
coexisting is a childish naive thought. Just look at the migrants at europe what happens when two completely different cultures tries to "coexist". Fuck that if this movie was an analogy of what's happening in the real world im on zods side all day.

The collateral damage is not the problem. It's the lack of character development. By this scene we still don't know Kal-El beyond his sad childhood memories and that he loves Lois; Clark had no personality. Just a British actor with a great physique.
(The "maybe let the children die" Pa Kent scene didn't help, nor did the tornado scene.)
Christopher Reeve's Superman had warmth, humor, and emotional depth, on display in the Lois interview scene.
@@PastorKevin you ought to be a director then fucker

Such a great movie! The Colonel Hardy / Faora subplot is a gem.
If you dont own this on 4k I don't know what tell you except treat yourself sometimes. Best superhero movie ever visually and story wise
If you ask me the beef between the kryptonian and the American soldier was deeper then superman and zod
So Superman wiped out his own people. Damn. Please bring back Faora-Ul!

@@yc_knight6370 - Krypton was doomed anyway.
They literally didn't have a planet to stand on. Besides, there were other worlds in the universe to inhabit. There was no ACTUAL need to destroy Earth. Doing so was just lazy and convenient.
You have to ability to traverse the cosmos, but hey, let's fuck up THIS planet with sentient beings on it. Sure, we're weak and feeble beings, but we're still sentient and need our planet for ourselves. They could've easily taken their Krypton reforming act somewhere else.
@@blackSUAAAVE Wasnt it said in the movie that they could only terraform a living planet and not a dead one? I think they even tried to stay on a dead planet but they only failed.
@@Athenabadassinthearena - I dunno. That's a good point. I'll have to watch it again, and keep and ear out for it.
Offhand, I would imagine that if you could physically terraform a planet in a matter of days (a real terraforming mission would take decades...at least for us humans), I would surmise that you could inject or add whatever 'ingredients' that you'd need to do a proper job.
Mars is a few ticks inside the sun's habitable zone. But because it's not as big and as strong as Earth, it can't do the things Earth does. It needs a magnetic core to hold an atmosphere like Earth, which would also allow water to stay in liquid form. Liquid water is the building block of life as we know it (i.e. plants, animals, humanoids like us).
The Kryptonians have the ability to not only travel to other worlds, but walk freely on them via spacesuits, and don't seem to have the need to eat and drink as long as they are in the influence of a yellow sun.
They could pump into the soil and atmosphere anything they needed to thrive in their way of life. If you can terraform a planet the way they were doing it, I'm pretty sure you could turn a planet's dead core into a magnetic one. They could make it bigger, but not so much that it affects Earth in any way.
They have the technology to leave Earth completely alone, but for plot purposes, and general a-hole-ness, they'd rather kill 7 billion people and terraform a planet that's already functionally perfect instead.
Even if they didn't lay a finger on Earth, they could still live on it without terraforming it. So the question begs, why terraform it at all?
I guess circle back to the being a-holes part.
@@blackSUAAAVE Yes you are right. They were cruel..the sense of morality just wasn't in their DNA. Even I dont remember the movie exactly, thats why I asked.
This movie aged so damn well, especially now when DC lost completely their horizon. As a grown man (41 years old) I know something about cinema: 60s, 70s, 80s , till the present, going through drama, horror, science fiction, adventure... I love both Marvel and DC (the good movies, not the trashy ones), but this movie is far superior to many in the genre. It's a shame that DC didn't continue with this same tone with MoS 2, then Mos 3 and the JL, today it would be making the difference against Marvel who is on a downward curve.

Superman saved Lois for 80 years= endearing
Superman saved Lois in man of steel = criticized
@FURY that people is so dumb, they hate DC because of this Superman doesn't smile
@HandyMan101 it doesn't make sense to hate a character that doesn't smile. It's like saying you hate Aquaman because he doesn't smile.
HandyMan101 Superman smiles? All the fucking time? No. I can point to a lot of instances throughout history he did missions and stuff and didn’t smile
@HandyMan101 good point
HandyMan101
The core of a hero is overcoming personal conflict, first and foremost. MOS is about that. The turmoil of destroying Krytpon’s legacy or the human race.
In the event the whole of humanity is threaten, I’m certain nobody but psychopaths will be smiling. The difference between the Superman you speak of and this Superman is experience. The hero who smiles has already overcome his tragedies, this Superman has not.
Furthermore, people are complex, and even more so are heroes. Having Superman being positive all the time and having no difficulties taking on foes makes a character bland and boring. You can’t relate or aspire to that idealism, because that ideal superhero is not like any human.
MOS is great at conveying the darkness of being a superhero. This is the first time Clark ever encountered such a threat, and the fate of the world is on his shoulders. It would be unrealistic to expect him to be in the optimistic mood when he’s fighting multiple people comparable to him.
When you make a hero something he is not, the character can’t evolve. See the problem?

I've always really liked the Battle of Metropolis in MoS because you can feel how the two sides are equally desperate and making use of whatever resources they have to win. It's like the Battle of the Wall in GoT: a battle of survival between forces asymmetrically aligned to each other. I obviously side with the Earth, like I sided with the Night's Watch, but you can't fault the Kryptonians, like you can't fault the Wildlings, and man, both sides are giving it their all.

@@orcs_blood1793 You mean besides the mediocre dialogue, the shitty digital zoom-effect in every action scene, Michael Shannon's uninspired Zod, Lois Lane being a 2 dimension character, the used-coffee filter color saturation, or any of the myriad of flaws that managed to turn this into more of a disappointment than Thor: Dark World? The things I can say positive about this film is that it seems like Henry Cavill is trying very hard to work with very bad writing and the effects are good sometimes.
To me this is the greatest movie i ever watched
Clearly and underrated masterpiece
Still one of the best superhero movies ever released. So deep and a refreshing change in his character arc. But I was a fan of the realistic angle Zack Snyder was going for whereas many others weren't it seems.
Definitely the emotional climax of the film. Kal reaches the same conclusion Jor-El did when he said that Zod was a ghost. And what an incredible job in this whole movie by Michael Shannon. Terrence Stamp’s Zod is a legendary villain, but he’s cartoonishly evil. Shannon’s Zod has depth and purpose. He genuinely regrets killing Jor-El, he just feels it was absolutely necessary to his mission. The close up on Shannon’s eyes as he says ‘you destroy Krypton,’ is fantastic as you can see to Zod - in spite of all he’s done - there is no greater horror than in sealing Krypton’s fate. He literally cannot conceive of something more rash and horrifying.
Lost me with cartoonishly evil. Save that for Richard Donner’s Zod
The action, the acting, the CGI, the characters, the beautiful faces and epic storytelling are the reasons why this is my favorite superhero movie
