This week I bought a litter picking stick, a grabber stick and a large canvas bag to use to go walking and pick up litter. I need to move more and can't just walk with no purpose so now I'm outfitted to make my walking time useful. I''ll be the little old lady with the picker stick walking the neighborhood . . . LOL It will be cheaper than mall-walking.

Dora, I grew up in a small town with a general store. I was so sad to see that it went out of business a few years ago. The owners told us that they just couldn't compete with the prices being offered by Amazon or Walmart. You're right. It's so important to support small, local business owners whenever you can.

We agree about the Amazon Prime. We tend to use it most around Christmas, so we do a free 30 day trial once a year and that covers our Christmas present shipping. Loved the Jumer's cinnamon rolls from back in the day. Live in downstate Illinois and used to come there for business meetings a couple of times a year. CHEAP ENTERTAINMENT: Today, I went to a church rummage sale and bought a dozen huge books of piano music for 75cents each. Thirty years ago, I had purchased the first few books in the series for $30 each. I quilt/crochet/craft and often increase my supply stashes from charity thrift stores for 50 cents or so. These supplies can then be used to make inexpensive but special gifts.

That way, I don't overspend, and by keeping my main savings in one account (so called:"high interest"), I earn a little interest.

Love your list. I, too, have been doing these things for years. I get free money from banks by opening an account when cash is given in return. I write on the calendar the day I need to keep the account open to get the cash bonus...and then usually close the account. Every once in a while, I keep it, if it serves a need of some kind.
I've also never paid for cable. When free tv went the way of the Dodo, I stopped watching tv. I knew that if I had to pay for it, I'd watch it all the time to feel like I was getting my money's worth.
I've never had memberships--except one. It was way more expensive than it was presented as being. I cancelled after one month.
The only subscription I've ever had was AARP. I NEVER ONCE found a product or service that was less expensive than what I could find on my own--NEVER ONCE! So I cancelled that.
I also take my own food with me when I go on a trip. It's easy, but expensive to stop for food and snacks along the way.
    Love to you both! ❤

We actually love books, too. It was one of our sons who solved the problem for us. Each of our sons takes over our family budget for six months before graduating from high school. Our 2nd son noticed that we were spending money on books and then either not accounting for those expenses or trying to slide them into other areas of the budget. So, he suggested an actual "book" category in the budget. We funded it at the first of the year and then only bought books from that category. When we ran out of money, we had to stop buying books for the year. It made us super picky about out book-buying and helped us to stop buying too many.

My adult son gifted me a Roku soundbar when the speakers were going out on my old TV. This has been a wonderful gift. There are tons of free movies, TV shows, and news programs. I didn't have to replace my TV because the soundbar now functions as the sound system! I'm uncertain what the cost would be upfront and I was fortunate that it was gifted to me. It's saved me money on streaming services and/or cable. I've not had cable since I was young; however, I have been tempted for the first time in a very long time to purchase some basic package just for news channels. 1) What about AARP membership I hesitate to get it never have and am wondering what others think of it?
    2) Church suppers people overlook the fun and frugality of these - sometimes they are as high as $8.00 but include your entree, sides, dessert and drink. Often, they offer seconds for free ! You can meet interesting people - I once sat next to a retired military colonel.
    3) There are often FREE community meals you do not have to be homeless or a member of a congregation. Just be open minded as you will meet folks from all walks of life - something which is good for all of us.
    4) volunteering for events that feed folks will often allow you to bring home leftovers
    5) organize a potluck get together with friends
    6) free snacks/ treats giveaways take them to add to lunches, work or school snacks they are free !
    7) CZcams, Public Broadcasting are my go toos for viewing entertainment
    8) libraries- if there is a new book you want, seen on a talk show/ advertised/ by a popular author if you have this information libraries will often purchase it - I have done this and have often been the first to read these books since I did the legwork before requesting them

Yes, Amazon is usually cheaper but it only makes Bezos richer every time I buy from there, and he really doesn't need another billion. I go to Amazon to find a product and then try to go directly to that product's seller to actually buy the item. I do try to buy only American-made products, too.

I didn’t write on the calendar when my Sams membership was to automatically re- subscribe- so I found out when my Bank balance was off.Ive only used it once or twice in 2- years.Their gas prices are usually the lowest though.

@Reba Carmack - I have found that both Sams' and Costco's membership fees outweigh the savings for me. Neither company carried the octane rating that my vehicle needed. Costco worked well for me when I was on a severely restrictive diet and could get one of the items at about half price. Sam's worked well for me when I had a very small vending machine business. But since then, I've cancelled both.

As far as getting books from the library, you can suggest books that they buy in the future and be put on the list when and if they do.

My other sister used to use her kindle and get the free books. And if she really wanted a book and if it was for a price. She would spend no more than $5. But bc she was so frugal she would wait until her check came in Monthly. Or her grandkids wild get the book at the library and when her library did the free ebooks she was so excited bc then she could get the books for free. And being on the cancer treatments this made her happy. She passed after literally 20 years of dealing with the cancer. But she never lost her faith she kept positive. And she was always grateful. She was a true inspiration.

Amazon Prime has been worth every penny for my husband and me. We live in a major city where Whole Foods is one of the closest grocery stores and our Prime membership is more than paid for in the savings I get on grocery essentials.

    • @UndertheMedian
      @UndertheMedian  Před 3 lety +1

I can see that. We just don't order from Amazon very often and the movies that we wanted to watch weren't free with Amazon Prime. We would have had to pay more to rent them. So, for us, it was not worth it. But, I can see why it would be for you.

We don’t have any subscriptions at all. If we really want to watch a film, it can be found and paid for on you tube. We don’t eat out but love picnics and taking cake and coffee. We certainly never go to stores or online stores unless we have an actual need. We love to garden and grow from seeds to save even more money.
