    There is nothing inherently boring about the sound of the 180 degree engine. It’s actually unique. Most of the negative reaction around the 180 engine is just snobbery fueled by motorcycle reviewers who are probably comparing them subjectively to more powerful platforms as the 180 rarely is used in anything larger than a 650.

    I'd want a 270 degree crank on a new bike but that 180 degree really brings some nostalgia from growing up on a kfx400

  • @pcofranc

    That was an excellent and enjoyable video on firing order. HD front cylinder fires at 315 and the rear piston at 405 degrees which creates the unique unbalanced sound.

    • @9LB.hammer
      @9LB.hammer Před 2 měsíci +1

      And ironically, the firing order is also one of the reason why HD engines doesnt make the same power as the other layouts

    I used to think that Ducati's had V8's in them until a motorbike enthusiast told me it's due to the firing interval that makes them sound like that.

      Yep, because 270° inline 2 = half crossplane inline 4 and crossplane inline 4 = half crossplane v8

      @@Gnerko123 yeah but the sound pattern of 270 degree twins and 90 degree L twins is pretty much the same. Since 360-270= 90 degree offset so the exhaust pulses have the same separation.

  • @joshuastateham
    @joshuastateham Před 3 měsíci +2

    Firing order makes a huge difference in sound with uneven sequences typically producing the most character. Therefore, in a parallel twin, crankshaft angles in order of unevenness and increasing audio interest are as follows:
    360° crank: balanced, similar to a boxer twin sound
    180° crank: unbalanced, similar to a thumper sound
    270° crank: unbalanced, similar to a 90° V-twin sound (Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Suzuki)
    285° crank (KTM): more unbalanced, similar to a 75° V-Twin sound (also KTM)
    315° crank (Husqvarna): very unbalanced, similar to a 45° V-twin sound (Harley)
    I'm not aware of anyone who has produced a 300° crankshaft, but in theory it should slot between the 285° and 315° in "lumpyness" and sound similar to a 60° V-twin (Indian). Sound is subjective of course, so there's something for everyone, but go listen to the 315° crankshaft exhaust note of the Husqvarna Nuda 900 parallel twin. I'll wait. It makes the 270's sound tame.

    The 360´s weren´t represented well in this video. The Benelli Leoncino 500 has a wonderful sound, almost like the CP3 from Yamaha.
    It takes the number 1 spot for me, closely followed by 270.
    180 is just awful, there is no other way to put it...

  • @justauser

      Yes, similar to a 90* V-twin firing order. 285 crankshaft (KTM) is similar to a 75* V-Twin firing order (also KTM). There was an attempt to mimic the 45* V-twin firing order (Harleys) in a P-twin, but I forget the crank angle used or who did it... Maybe Husqvarna and their 315 crankshaft?

    180° doesn't sound all that great..it basically sounds like a 1 cylinder since the firing interval is so short
    360° sounds like a low revving 4 cylinder since.. a typical 4 cylinder is just 2 360° parallel twins spaced 180° from each other
    270° HELL YEAH the uneven firing interval is making sound rough and awesome
