Guitar heroes make me want to play guitar--but Bill Frisell makes me want to play music.
now that is a wonderful and apt statement.
beautiful comment. I agree with you!
Amen
Only music.
Indeed!

It's really such a beautiful session, and not just because of the music. Frisell is the master, and it's so clear that he's passing on the flame to a new generation in Morgan. Morgan's mix of amazement, awe, shyness and humility is really humbling to see. He's great, and he's worked harder than most can imagine to get there, and Frisell sees him as a musical peer and is offering him guidance. And Frisell is not a talker. So you have two guys who communicate way better in public with music, and Morgan is being asked to publicly acknowledge his musical equality to Frisell -- which is both clear to anyone who hears the music, and also, I'm sure, absurd to Morgan since Frisell is, well, Frisell. And Bill underscores Morgan's talent by calling "Pearl" and crediting Morgan publicly as a composer. It's just great to see the passing of the torch like this, and Morgan is truly worthy and will surely continue to be up to the task. And someday he'll be there with some kid and he'll be doing the talking. And then they play... Just fantastic. Anyone who can't see the humanity in the interaction, in all its awkwardness, is really missing something beautiful in the music as well. It's that earnestness that comes through.
Always appreciate that Bill, known as a jazz player, is comfortable playing triads. He doesn’t have to show his chops with complex harmonies to show his prowess.
He just plays what sounds right for the piece he’s playing and he does it so damn well.
These guys are hilarious -so quiet and thoughtful it verges on a Portlandia sketch
So true. It's lovely, but also verges on painful.
Thomas is very obviously a Fred Armisen character.
Bill is friends with Fred Armisen
Perfect description.
Congrats for bassist! Thomas Morgan is the next Charlie Haden in my book
The way Thomas keeps time with his right hand between notes is so effective, keeps the ship sailing very nicely.
Ok this has become one of my most frequent listens over the last month or so. It's fun to quietly tap my ride cymbal to, what with that beautiful time/feel.
Thank you.
He seems to use his neck and head as well, my guess unintentionally; he had to do it. So much force stored in the compressed coil, so to speak.
I knew Bill Frisell would blow me away. But I didn't know who Thomas Morgan was until watching this. Holy cow! Now I do! Together they are really tremendous.
A true master of tone it's not about hiding behind speed or volume .
Very true. Then again, at the end of the day, hiding behind speed and volume doesn't really work for any player.
This is really special. These two humble, gentle souls, often at a loss for words, sing loudly through their instruments.. awesome
The simplicity and the humanity of the stories told through these strings remind me of Lars Danielsson
Thank you Bill Frisell. Your inspiration means more to me than you will ever know.
Have always appreciated the sound of Bill Frisell -- gentle, introspective, innovative and inspirational.
A treasure!!!! Thank you so much.
Bill Frisell, you probably don't know this, but you inspire me more than any other guitarist. I first met you in the practice rooms before you played at my college. This was around the time I had discovered your work and my enthusiasm for your musical landscapes. Then to discover you were playing at my school and to get to actually meet you was incredible! Thank you for signing my records and thank you for years of inspiration.
I've heard them all, pretty much, and Bill Frisell is, well, stunning. So special. No licks.
I don't think I've ever heard more tasteful guitar playing, or musicianship, from both guys. Fantastic.
I love John Barry too. He'd be impressed. A musician who plays guitar, rather than a guitar player who plays music. What a fabulous duo. Gobsmacked. He obviously doesn't know how good he is. Fcuk.
I'm fortunate enough to have met Bill Frisell and John Barry
WOW! I didn´t know that Bill Frisell plays the double bass so well... but this guitarist is also great.
@@so5532 it´s a joke. looking at their personalitys...
Fantastic! So good. Thank you!!!!
Bill Frisell really knows what he doesn't want to talk about. He has a masterful knowledge of the fretboard and an awesome sense of rhythm, the perfect blend of talent and training, an enviable position. I see it as a sort of spiritual prowess, really, and anyone can make good music if the balance of the know how and the being there is right.
great music...thanks
Extraordinary... really! So good.
They have such a good timing. Beautiful sound.
as good as music can get; how deep and honest and authentic
bill frisell one of my favorite guitar players ever
This is so, so cool in every way and in every aspect! So nice...
One of the most beautiful, peaceful, mesmerized times I ever had recently. Very down to earth, humble gentlemen! Electric guitar and double bass couldn't have been sounded any other way!
I saw Bill in vancouver with his 858 quartet, and he was to give a 10 minute discussion before. He talked for the entire hour right until he went on, and he seemed comfortable and relaxed: this is how he talks, which struck me as being very thoughtful considered and Highly Intelligent. He thinks clearly about what he is saying and makes everyones question seem important because of the thought behind his response, and I cant help seeing a clear relationship to his playing, which embodies all these characteristics.
Amazing music from two extraordinary humans.
Bill Frisell is a genius. Got to see him several years. Love Thomas' playing too. I also dig that Bill Milkowski is the host too! :)
Bill your gentleness, brilliance, color and grace come through in your playing.
It’s so insightful and refreshing to hear Bill said he struggles with every song as I was listening and reflecting on how effortless and how the music seems to naturally pour out of him
¡gracias!
There is so much to learn in this video. Damn bill, you are just so goooooood
It feels at moments that Bill is falowing Thomas, brilliant.
Simply good creativity on guitar and bass.
Always refreshing to see them letting special musicians have a go. Great job!
I love the silences! Words are not enough sometimes.
This is unforgettable! Everything will be compared to this from now on. Closed my eyes and just flew!
Thomas Morgan's "Pearl" is beauty on a swing. Love it!!
Beautiful!!!
Genuine Rock star interview :D :D
Top class players, and Bill means a lot to me! Real art!
Seeing this duo live in 2018 is still one of the most powerful and resonant music experiences of my life
still love your music!!
Bill Frisell makes me feel like I can fly. I cannot, of course, but I can practice and play music. Thanks, Bill.
I discovered Bill Frisell thanks to my guitar teacher. I'm so grateful. It's absolutely wonderful. It's exactly the kind of music I need right now.
this is absolutely incredible...
The book walled setting is like a speaker enclosure. Tremendous audio quality on this video recording.
Wow thanks
Amazing musicians! Great show! Open & fearless, completely original, but ‘history/context aware’ tunes… simultaneously searching, playful & quite serious, playing!! Very inspiring stuff! Thanks for posting! I’ll definitely like & follow!
Nice,nice,nice músi¡Congratulations Mr.Frisell and Mr Morgan.It was so amazing¡
Dang Bill, I just figured out that all I had to do was close my eyes, open my ears and my soul....it made so much sense....harmony of my senses...thankyou
He played several times at The Continental Club in Austin, Tx. back in the 80's, a venue that usually featured local R and B bands, doing very spacey compositions. His sound was wonderful and alien. A great player and true space explorer.
The opening tune main melody reminds me of Daniel Lanois’ Shine. Is that just me? Masterful playing and phrasing
I love that, here, Bill Frisell appears as the extrovert of the two...
Saw them live in a club and it was exactly the same...
But what great musicians they both are!
He seems like a very shy guy, the music is beautiful!
So brilliant
Recently discovered Bill Frisell. I love he lets the music play rather than constantly trying to dazzle with how many notes can be crammed into a bar. So it's not a competition, but beautiful music.
Beautiful
I really enjoyed their playing, very nice songs, pleasant sounding, jazzy.. cozy cole hh..
Thomas is an amazing player! uf!
Bill, we know already!
A master guitarist at work. Taste, tone, technique. Great song sense too. Guitar playing doesn't get any better than this. The Goldfinger segment is so cool.
wow my god they are fantastic
Terrific Music....
great work
i love it!
Thoughtful, playful, inspired, and tasteful. Like a gifted chef serving an eight course meal, Mr Frisell’s compositions, arrangements and set list comprise a journey to excite and inspire the senses.
this is such a life-affirming session in every way. the gentle humanity of these two, and the art .. it is a gift to hear and see this.
that album is so good, I try to see him every time he's in NYC, he and Thomas Morgan can read each others minds... such deep listening
plus it's so cool to hear him play through a vox, he still gets his sound as if it were a fender almost
I play a Tele into a Vox AC15 and get a similar sound on the neck pickup with the tone down on both guitar and amp!
The music is moving.
Remind me never to ask these guys any questions.....happy to just shut up, watch and listen to the magic.
This concert needs a warning -- 'frequent interruptions by a twit'
Placer y paz, escucharlos!
Such a nice tone on his setup too!
Bill Frisell takes you, and you drift off and sometime land, thank you Mr.Frisell and Thomas Morgan. By the way Goldfinger theme wipes me out.
Lovely.
Good music, guys.
This is very close to music therapy. That´s why the guys don´t care about showing a false facade like we are used to in a "grammy or mtv" style interview. This is the opposite of mainstream and it is SO refreshing. Bill´s personality and insights reminds me a lot of Ted Greene. Kindred spirits and true pure artists, like someone else said.
Yes, Ted Greene, another truly inspiring personality and font of musicality. An apt pairing.
on point!
Bravo!
They both have built in atomic timing clocks! Thomas Morgan adds so so much to Bill, I think it is the best ingredient!
Véry good duo, musicians et compositions too.
These guys are way too good. I wish I could be half as good at composing music as these dudes.
Great concert
Good, all the way through
BILL IS SUCH A MELODIC PLAYER...GUITAR PLAYER OF THE YEAR....
Brilliant
Bob Mallory + Bill Frisell =
I really like the first song they did
absolute master
man these guys. so lost for words they are...sweet souls!
True Masters both.
Magical
WHAT in the fresh hell?
THIS IS GORGEOUS.
Mr Frisell please come to Iowa
i've been fortunate enough to see him 3 times. All amazing experiences. If you get the chance, it will make an impact
Imagine a set or two at the Sanctuary in Iowa City. That's still a jazz club there right?
💛
Oh my gosh! Thomas!
Amazing pair of musicians
its Ron Carter and Jim Hall all over again.
It certainly picks up where they left off. But Bill and Thomas definitely find their own sound here.
Nobody absolutely nobody has that Bill Frisell tone ever!
Obviously two kindred spirits. It might be best to forget the interview and just let them play.
Bill said it. When you start talking about music, it's not music you're discussing.
@@Landerdog It's intangible. Asking someone to explain that is pointless.
I loved hearing Bill and Thomas and experiencing their personalities more.
Watching them talk is so painful and confusing but listening to them play music is a joy.
the awkwardness that some comment is a problem of the watcher who expects that people should behave in some way. We are all different. Deal with it... btw Cool Goldfinger version!
I agree. I find myself in this situations more often. You know, where I have a difficult time to find the words to answer or explain something that means a lot to me, is like my mind gets mangled and shut trrying to find the words that could aproximate an explanation. Thing is these guys don´t have an agenda, like, "hey let´s be upbeat and energetic with our answers so we can sell more records". They are pure artists.
Yeah, is like the opposite when you think about the late shows, where everybody must be funny and make good jokes. Nothing against making jokes but it feels kind of unnatural. About the difficult that you mention. I think that there are two keys. The first one has to do with leaning to be calm, and don't feel anxious or pressure when you are chating and the second key is about geting in touch with your spontaneity that whe all have. Everyone have automatic thoughs when we talk, but not everybody can access that spontaneity and is about that... I would close the idea in other way but my english is reaching its limits xP Salutes!
Do you know all songs on this video?
Please give me tracklist
Naw... dudes just awkwardish. Never change Bill. 🎼
