So glad you mentioned to drain the oil and change filter after carbs flooding. Probably a gallon of fuel mixed in the oil. That was a surprise!!

with warm and lowest possible idle, turn each air/fuel mixture screw in and out to get premium idle, low speed mixture. about 1.5 or 2 turns out when running best means pilot jets are correct size. More than 3 or 3.5 turns out means pilots need to be a size richer. Closed or very little open means pilots are too rich, go to size leaner(smaller number)

Thanks for video GM! I am the original owner of 97 RS. I last cleaned the carbs over a dozen years ago and am pretty good about using a fuel stabilizer when storing the bike. Despite that, I have had gas leaking from the carbs, so I decided it is probably past time to yank the carbs, clean the jets, and replace the gaskets. The parts were pretty clean with only minor build up, but the gaskets and rings were almost solid. Even though I have cleaned the carbs previously, your video has been very helpful.

The TPS normally needs no adjustment unless it's removed but it's done with a multimeter and specs from the service manual. Popping on deceleration is from the slow circuit being too lean. Try a size larger pilot jet (sometimes called slow or idle jet)

I recently purchased a Yamaha 1997 1300 cc tour deluxe with 6600 miles. I bought the bike pretty cheap but running very poorly. I was told the gas was left in the tank & carbs for many years. I ordered the all balls kit and a ultrasonic cleaner thinking that I can rebuild my carbs after watching your video. I took my time and I started out dissembling carb 3 and than ran into some issues. I can not remove the needle jet screw that is behind the plug (the plug was not present on my carb) , also the float valve brass fitting hold down screw is also frozen and damage from excessive force on trying to remove them. Both screws are damaged and may require drilling them out . I have used my best snap-on screw driver on them unfortunately the brass flat head screw is no longer a flat heat. Is it possible to drill the needle vale adjustment screw without damaging the carbs or is that a no go .

Hey there GM, I chatted with you a few years back about my '07 RSV where I had a heavy fuel smell in the garage after rides. You recommended the seals on the needle might be going. I didn't get a chance to work on it then, as life got in the way. I have added monster ovals since then, picked up a carb repair and a jet kit for that and then had to move from the Midwest to your neck of the woods. Rode about half the year here then got a constant leak soon as the bike fires up. So now I have the bodies off the bike.
I am in the process of tearing down the carbs. I wanted to know, how far I need to go? Does the vat damage electronic components? Do I need to remove the throttle body position sensor?

Wanted to provide an update: I bought new plugs, a fuel pump and filter, as I figure it was time to get that out of the way while I was wrenching. Broke down the carbs and soaked everything I wasn't replacing. Dipped in water then Naphtha just as you did. Installed the jets from the kit and replaced all the seals, needles and seats. Fired right up and purred like an angry kitten. I was over the moon that I was able to do it just attending your 101 course. Then after a day and a half, she wouldn't start. I kept fiddling with the pilot screws, the idle speed screw, and nothing brought her back.
Well, after about a couple weeks of fooling with it a little after work, ordering several pilot jet sizes, I kept getting the feeling she was starving for fuel. I finally did a petcock and fuel pump flow test. Petcock was fine. Pulled the fuel line to the carbs and tried starting her and the line was sputtering, so I rigged up a temp shop fuel tank so I can get a look at the carbs while trying to start it. the temp tank had some clear line on it and I noticed the fuel was not getting sucked down into the system. Put the original pump back on (which I salvaged out of the trash because I had a feeling I might be needing it after reading a bunch of blogs and watching other carburetor videos). Lo and Behold! She was back to purring again!
Just wanted to thank you for such a detailed video on carbs and specifically the same ones I was working on. Couldn't have done it without you and now I am a bit wiser on how to troubleshoot these. In all my years wrenching on cars and bikes with my dad, and I'm now 51, it was my first time tearing down and rebuilding carbs. He's still up north and I wish he could have been with me. But I'll get to show him when I take a ride up there.
      Can't thank you enough, sir.

...you can probably find a "float height" measurement, then hold upside down to where float weight is keeping them closed, and measure from float bowl gasket face to far edge of float, this is your height.

you can buy manifolds on Ebay very reasonably, those are always used up with cracking after about 10 years of use. Seal them against head with threebond 1184 or yamabond 4.
They will suck air etc. Could be a reason for smelling fuel at warm up.
or leaving choke on too long.
You only want to choke as little as possible, on choke can foul plugs quickly.

I’m the guy that has the 1979 Honda CBX and I have a 1983 Yamaha venture that needs to have the carbs rebuilt on them. I ordered the kit to rebuild the carburetors that you recommended and thought I was gonna have time to do it myself but besides not having the experience I don’t have the time due to moving to a new place in East Texas with 10 acres to take care of. The gunk and filth in these carburetors is not from gasoline with methanol, that is from not riding the bike. I have done my share of resurrections on motorcycles that sat with gas in the carburetors for years. Sometimes the slides would be guarded into the Boers of the carburetors. If you are getting fuel past the O-rings leakage, smell the oil in the crankshaft/crankcase area. If it smells like gasoline, don’t even start the bike. Inside the gas tank probably looks the same as these float bowls…
Methanol in the gas is corrosive to some plastics..
Harley riders call Japanese motorcycles rice burners. They don’t even know why because every time I saw that sticker on a hog riders helmet, I asked him what it means, and they never know. I know what it means.
Along those lines, I hope that other countries don’t start calling motorcycles ridden in America, corn burners, because it would be true, and it doesn’t sound as groovy as being called a rice burner..
this video reminded me of how much I hate carburetors now that I have experienced fuel injection. I was watching these videos because I was considering buying my third Yamaha venture because a very clean one just came up on craigslist. I put 138,000 on my 86 Yamaha venture over 16 years, I put 49,000 miles on my 2002 Yamaha royal star venture which could not hold a candle to the original ventures. I’ve had both, I know.. The third generation of the V4 Yamaha venture is a dog compared to the 1986 through 1991 ventures. That generation of ventures actually turned in the 12 second quarter mile times at the dragstrip. The starventures, I’d be amazed if they turned in the 16 second quarter mile range..
The 1984, 85, and 83 1200 CC ventures were the smoothest. They had problematic second gears if the rider was not deliberate in his shifting. They fixed second gear, in 1986, gave it bigger saddlebags, bigger carburetors, the same clutch that they use in the Vmax, and the 86 on did not have the smoothest engine like the early version did, but the 86 through 91 ventures were the rocket ships. I only sold mine after 16 years because it was getting old, I never had any trouble with it, nothing ever broke.. of course I was a maintenance junkie, I did things like take the driveshaft out to lube the splines. I change the brake fluid and clutch fluid every year, I never ever pressure washed my Venture ever. Pressure washers destroy motorcycles from the inside. They force water and dirt down all the cables, into the electric’s, into all your lights and gauges so they fog up the lenses, into your wheelbearings, into all your suspension linkage, into your electrical connections, never never never pressure wash a motorcycle ever.. when you put them away for winter, fill the gas tank all the way up to the top, and drain the carburetors. Each carburetor has a screw to drain the float bowl at the bottom. Park it on the center stand out of the sun and don’t cover it with plastic. spray inside and out of your mufflers and exhaust pipes with some kind of oil like fluid film, which is actually lanolin, I guess you could call it sheep fat.. $9.98 a can at Lowe’s. I rustproof my new ram hemi pick up truck that cost over $50,000 with fluid film. I took five days taking my time to make sure I rush proof that here in the Northeast. Those ram trucks restaurant in front of your eyes if you don’t undercoat them with some type of oil, not Ziebart tour, you have to spray it with fluid film or something like it that will travel to get where the salt water will get. The Ziebart will harden and it will not travel and it will actually trap water making your car rust faster. Spray that on your motorcycle exhaust system inside and out for winter storage. It will not hurt the bike, you can actually put it on the leather, could actually put it on your skin to soften it.
make sure you do not use carburetor cleaner unless you have to when doing the carbs. Because carburetor cleaner is an acid/solvent.
never never never use dishwashing liquid to wash your motorcycle or to lube your tires when installing new tires. Dishwashing liquid‘s, most of them have LYE in them. That is extremely corrosive to aluminum. If you wash the bike with dishwashing liquid that has LYE in it, you will destroy the finish of the wheels. If the dish washing liquid burns your eyes, that’s the lye.. only use rubber lube that you can buy at Napa for about $16 a gallon to lube tires for mounting tires, and only use car washing liquid soap to wash your motorcycle by hand. And never use paper towels when cleaning your windshield. It’s like using sandpaper on plastic or acrylic..
to clean your bike up to do a detail job, go to the Honda shop and buy a can of Honda spray detailer. That is the best stuff in the entire universe. You can spray it on a dirty motorcycle and wipe it off and it will not scratch it. I had a Honda pacific coast, black, that I commuted on for 24 years. I never ever washed that bike with water and soap. I only used Honda spray detailer on it, and when I sold it, it still shined, in the sun without the spiderwebs scratches in the finish it will show up on black vehicles. I also use that Honda spray detailer on my expensive guitars. It is the single item that Honda sells most of in their entire inventory. They sell more of the spray detailer then they do spark plugs. You can use it on the vinyl seat, on the paint, and and on your windshield, and it will not scratch, within reason. I mean if you have dried sand on it, you have to hose that off first
