- Check out this 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon that we just pulled out of Montana. This is going to be Stacey's new ride and we are very excited to get it back on the road and put it into service. Thanks for watching JC.

I think this might be my old van! I used to live in Missoula and sold it to a guy from Helena around 2003
My father bought a vanagon around the late 2000s, he still owns it till this day as a daily driver
Hard-top Wolfsburg Edition Vanagon: There were Wolfsburg models offered in the many years of the Vanagon hard-top. The '87-'89 Wolfsburg edition hard-top Vanagon has a flip-up table and two quick-release, rear facing seats behind the front seats (in lieu of the forward facing bench seat commonly found in non-Wolfsburg Vanagon hard-tops). All Wolfsburg edition hard-top Vanagons from '87-'89 have a full curtain set that snaps in place (no tracks). Also, all of these models have the rear seat that folds into a bed and the accompanying rear cushion. The non-Wolfsburg edition Vanagon hard-top did not necessarily come with a folding rear seat, although most did. In 1990 and 1991, the Wolfsburg edition was replaced by the Carat, which has the same table, jump seat, and bed layout. The Carat models came with all of the creature comfort options-A/C, power door locks, power windows, cruise control-whereas the option levels of the various years of Wolfsburg edition hard-tops varied. All models were available in either 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transaxle.
I dont know like you guys in the us, but here in europe i understand it more like: wolfsburg edition is top class of multivan. other than bed, table, back to back seat it has el. mirrors, plastic bumpers, sqare headlights, central locking, tinned windows... full package.
Carat was something else. More like Airport taxi: 4 luxury seats, table, no bed.
This car is absoult mint and the engine... everything is better than stock.
Very nice find.Ive owned 3 vanagons and enjoyed them all.Especially the 87 westy.Have a 72 Riviera conversion Ive had for 26 years and in process of full restoration of a 79 Westfalia
Incredible condition! Those seams are spot-on! Wish my Hannover Edition was that straight!
I wanna see an update when this GEM of a WEEKENDER is finished.
Nice clean Van :) Congratz
Lucky Stacy. Had one this era that ate oil. Hope you fix yours cheaply. Loved the video. Thanks!
Thanks for watching Andrew. JC.
Looks good! I love them all, however, there's just something about the old body style that I love. I'm going to take one final look at the 79' tomorrow before I buy it. I'm so excited to finally be a VW owner! Thank you for your videos...I use them as a tool to know what to look for and to learn. Have a great day -Jamie
when the vanagons 1st came out l thought they were so ugly, now over time ive grown fond of them, and they drive real nice unless its windy, yours looks like a great starting point for sure,
I still think later vanagons are pretty ugly, but they are very nice to drive.
The Vanagon really is a well built vehicle and they drive so nice. If only they could have come up with a little better engine design and a bit more power they would have been the perfect vehicle. I'm excited to adopt this one into the family. JC.
most 1987 cars had crappy engine setups for the most part,
Most 1987 Japanese cars were pretty solid. Looking at you Toyota, Honda, and Subaru.
I realize I am kinda off topic but does anyone know of a good place to watch newly released tv shows online ?
Looked like there was a 50's era Chevy out there too, but in much rougher shape, nice van project you've got there!
That's so cool! I'm working to get a vanagon but still no luck. I'll settle with my toyota previa for now.
Nice vanagon! I used to have 1984 VW Westfalia and kept bringing it to the mechanic in SB and every time they charged me $300+ for fixing it and cost me lost of dollars. So ended selling the van to the mechanic that I knew and gave me $1,500 for the vanagon at that time I needed to get rid of it because it’s costing too much to maintain the vehicle.
I've spotted one in Lima, the owner is asking 2tou as is, I'm planning to buy and do all the adaptations so I'd be able to go to the mountains and the jungle, the dunes ... etc
Pop-top Wolfsburg Edition Vanagon: There were many different Wolfsburg edition models available with a pop-top. For example, in 1984 there were Wolfsburg edition full campers with a higher trim level and two-tone paint job, but were otherwise identical to a non-Wolfsburg full camper. In '85, '86, and '87, a special edition called the Wolfsburg Weekender was offered in both 2WD and 4WD (Syncro). That model has a pop-top and upstairs bed, like all Westy full campers from '80-'91, but no fridge, stove, sink, or cabinet assembly. Instead, the rear seat is full width to accomodate three adults (rather than the shorter seat in full campers that only accomodates two). Behind the driver's seat, the Wolfsburg Weekender has a rear facing seat with storage underneath. These particular models also came factory-equipped with a 2nd battery system and an all-electric cooler that sat behind the passenger seat and was held down to the floor with two thumb screws. In 1990 and 1991, the Wolfsburg Weekender was replaced by the Multivan (MV) model. The MV model has an almost identical interior layout as the Wolfsburg Weekender: same upstairs bed arrangement, same cabinet in the left rear corner, same full-width bench seat. But the rest of the interior (and, in fact, the trim level) is identical to the Carat. And, similar to the Carat, the MV came fully equipped with every factory option (unlike the Wolfsburg Weekender, with widely varied options). Both the 2WD Wolfsburg Weekender and Multivan were available in either 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transaxle. The Wolfsburg Weekender Syncro-as with any Syncro-was not available in automatic. The Multivan was never offered as a Syncro, either.
Just in case you have the poptop!
It's a beauty
Yes sir put a good gage on the oil first if bad it's burnt . So install a Subaru 2.2 in it that install makes a world of difference in it wow your going to love it . Then try the taller steel and smaller rubber. Your going to love that also Sir the Best of luck with it ! And a great find.
Check the oil pressure with a gauge. I have a near identical vanagon that had the same symptoms as yours. Mine had good oil pressure and both the oil pressure switches were good. My problem was in the oil pressure switch wiring harness, I replaced the connection and no more oil pressure light/buzzer. GoWesty has a nice write up on their website about it. Nice looking bus!
Wow, what a find!. Good luck with it. Maybe the engine will loosen up after routine starts, it shimmeys alittle on video, but no loud knocking,
The Wolfsburg engine and drive train is German made. Most of the others are hecho in Mexico. The aluminum castings are significantly better in germany. The patina of the aluminum is the indicator.
Considering the pictures of where it was sitting you would think the body would be a lot worse especially underneath.
I have the original '87 VW Vanagon wolfsburg Edition just like the one in the picture and still have it. Still running and use it from time to time. The AC overhead is gone. It needs a lot of work to put it in top shape.
Wolfsburg is a step up over the base model...for example, alloys vs steel wheels, two tone bumper paint...no weekender set up in base...rear seat might not fold, but I am not sure
I have this exact van
Could the low oil pressure not be cured by new main and big end shell bearings?
Obviously as long as the crank is not scored....
That model is known as the transporter caravelle here in the U.K.
times change peoples minds, me? I always loved the VW bus now with a Subaru engine is a knock out
At 9:08 when you looked under did that frame rail have rust holes or am I seeing things ?
changing the oil pump will be a good point to start.
Is it for sale
vibration, tapping noise are collapsed hydraulic valve lifters, usually they will quit down and maybe the engine will stop vibrating
I'm not totally giving up on this thing just yet. Have a couple more things to try before I throw in the towel. I'm hoping we can save this low mile engine. Thanks for the suggestion. JC.
I want one of the 1980 to 1983 ones
but I'd take any Vanagon anyway
I had a late 83 Vanagon that was watercooled. I sold it to someone who could restore it. I haven't seen the finished product yet...
Cool find ..i think the girls could have the interior done in a day :P ... yeah tell em Matt said that :p... Dang straight is right no time at all to touch up the outside thanks for sharing !!
Matt
Matthew Schurter I will pass along the message. Thanks for watching Matt.
I hope the engine is not a big deal but she could not be in better hands i know! thanks JC
What a find! How is it now?
The old base/clear paint certainly didn't hold up well! Best to strip that all off and paint it complete. Get some new product with UV protection.
Done
the sliding door on my t3 locks by it self is t normal?
How nice would it be to get a rust free machine like his into the workshop? Would be like a holiday! The ones I see are rotten as an old pear. Normally all the bottom 18" all needs replacing or serious welding work
I want the a/c unit😍😍😍for some reason I don't have a valve of death
Why not rebuild the engine ??it looks like in decent shape
On my westfalia I hit the rear left corner like you have there
Wow , so the engine is on it's way out , take it out strip it & restore it , never know when you need one l am guessing you will be driving these Volkswagen cars , vans & buses for years yet so it would be no big deal huh ? plus always handy to have spare parts !
thats a '87 wolfsburg. the wolfsburg medallion was removed by someone and reattached in the wrong place. it should be a few inches higher and in line with the beltline stripe. in '88 they were called wolfsburgs too. The carat didnt come out until '89. the '87 wolfsburg was the only one that did not have the fiberglass sideskirts. the '88-'91 did. btw, that black plastic tray that is sitting on the front pass floor is a rare jumpseat tray...sits behind the jumpseat.. anyway throw another oil PSi sender in it... the 2.1 wbx with the hi and lo dynamic oil psi gauges are always kinda funky. i bet that engine is fine, just needs a oil psi sender.....
btw - love the 5.0 badge on the rear :)
sunwolfyvan speak english
We do not have a motorcycle like this one in Brazil, this one is very beautiful but the engine is the same and does not manufacture more of that engine for the turbo komb in Brazil.
Myself, I would likely have swapped the Forester engine into the Vanagon. Kennedy makes a very nice adapter. I've owned several bugs and a couple of buses. But VW lost my allegiance when they got so snotty toward the air cooled crowd when they were pushing their water cooled vehicles. Since then I've become very impressed with Subaru. Same basic flat four engine design, but WAY better engineered. Way easier maintenance as well. (Not to mention HP!)
I have the Subaru EJ22 W/ Kennedy adapter and SS exhaust in my 85 Adventurewagen making it California smog certified, it's been awesome so far :)
Hi there, I've got one very similar and I love it. Do you know what colour paint it is?
What ever happened to this van? (currently looking at one)
you traded a working subaru for yours? I just started tearing down my 86 vanagon gl. i got it for 700. it looks just like yours with a firing engine that needs work.
What weight oil is in it, to thin, is the oil filter clogged or come apart?
Wooley689 New Wix filter and new 20/50 Castrol. JC.
what do you do with these cars after you restore them
We will be keeping this Vanagon but occasionally we do sell some of the VW's we find. JC.
Hi Jeremy, what about this nice Vanagon? Didn't find any news about it in your videos. Did I miss something? Greetings from Germany
I haven't done an update video on it although I have been meaning to. I replaced all the fuel lines, changed the oil, set timing and got it fired up and the engine is sadly no good. I am trying to decide what route to take with the replacement engine. I would really like to do a Subaru Conversion on this bus but may end up putting a stock 2.1 back in it. Thanks for watching. JC.
Update making it a Syncro!
For research and informations about Vanagon Syncro you are welcome: vwsyncro.eu .
How much was it?
I actually traded a Subaru Forester straight across for it. JC.
I`ve never seen the plate on the back. What does the `5.0 liter H.O.`means?
Greetings from germany
It means whoever previously owned the Vanagon was an idiot who put nonsensical badges on their vehicles :)
5 liter High Output, probably a badge off a Ford Mustang..
Hi,
I am looking into acquiring one just like this one with an idea of swapping it's blown up engine with a Subaru ej20 engine, however I am also wondering if a Nissan Q.D 32 will be a good choice..
Willy Mwangi I have an 87’. Have owned it for over 10 years now. Clean, and it just sits.
@@riffraff1880 Running on it's original wasserbox engine?
Willy Mwangi yes
très très joli , heureusement que vous l'avez sauvé !!!
Wolfsburg edition means not made in mexico, as far as I have always found. (german made)
Bob G i
DUDE..... that's not the oil light..... The oil light didn't come on, when you trun the key.

Если вам интересно могу снять видео про такую же машину
+Volkswear Subaru Swap?
I wish I could afford it but I'm still trying to come up with the cash to buy the conversion kit for the Syncro. Maybe once I get the Syncro finished we could look at doing this one. For now I need to just get this one on the road with the wasserboxer. JC.
Is it possible to fit the old 2.0L Aircooled engine into a later Watercooled vanagon?
THROW A SUBIE IN IT
A broken wassershitter? You don't say 😂
