  • The Tudors are one of the most well-known of the English royal dynasties for several reasons: the larger than life characters, the multiple marriages and Virgin Queen, and the extraordinary portraits. When Hans Holbein the Younger became Henry VIII's painter, he helped create an image of the king that has shaped our understanding of the Tudors. Franny Moyle joins us to share her research into how Holbein helped create the legacy of Henry VIII.

I just listened to the podcast and loved everything. Absolutely fascinating. -Terrific work as always.
-My exposure to HH the Younger's work has been limited to the familiar portraits of Henry, the wives, Cromwell, Moore, etc where the 'props' are very few to nonexistent.
But never before have I seen The Ambassadors, and I am now so curious about the multilayered meaning of that ink-marked quill tip in the foreground of The Ambassadors portrait. Now I will tell my husband what he can gift me for the holidays.

Absolutely fascinating. I can't remember where I heard/read it but is it true Queen Caroline found the sketches stuffed in a cabinet somewhere and had them displayed? Or was it Charlotte? Now I'm second guessing the name but yeah. Can you tell us more about how they survived? 👑
