    Becky, I know you don't usually like labels - but if you get magnetic vinyl and put labels on (like diced tomatoes) then you can stick them to the front of the shelves and move them whenever you change your mind without having to actually make a new label. Then josh will generally know where stuff should go

    • @digsindirt4490

      They make Magnetic Photo Holders in various sizes with a clear window. You can slip a label in it instead of a photo and it will stay clean /dust free and be moved around or switched out as needed.

      Love this! I was thinking this when they first got the shelves.
      I have these shelves in my art room, just one 😂 but I’ve got my acrylic paints standing up on them and I put up labels in alphabetical order so if I was looking for say green then I could find it easy., I’m a Virgo so everything has to be in its right place and make sense also and I’m quite anal I’ve been described as and annoying in how everything has to be organized, but it just makes sense to me, that way if I ask someone to get me a can of apples from the pantry they know to look where all the fruit is.

      It’s our honour to spend time with you Becky, it’s fun plus we are all learning so much, because of you I have your Ball canning book and your mother-in-law’s book and also canning jars etc and am sowing a lot more things in my garden, it will be great when I can start canning things.
      I’m already doing dump bags, oh and I’ve got the bag holders also, they are great, I’ve got last years huge tomatoes in my freezer ready to add this years and then do some canning projects, I froze my board beans and I’ve picked peaches and nectarines from my grafted twin tree, I’ve dehydrated some herbs but want to do a lot more but shall buy a dehydrator tomorrow that’s 350 watts, I did it before for I think 5 hours in my air fryer but pretty sure it’s a higher wattage than a dehydrator is so it’s going to cost me an absolute fortune in electricity if I keep using my air fryer.
      I’ve bought an instant pot and omg I love cooking meals in it, my life has changed because of you so I say thank you 😊 and your funny and make us laugh to 😂

    Hi Becky, I read somewhere awhile back about a person that did canning for their family. If she had unused jars she cleaned them and stored drinking water in them. As she used her canned jars of food, she would wash the jars and again store drinking water in them. Turned out, she actually needed them and she had enough to share. So neat !! 😊😊😊

      I always add jars of drinking water to the pressure canner if I don't have a full load. Considering that my street gets dug up at least once a year for water issues, we are never short of water for drinking or cooking. I also keep jugs handy for washing/flushing if the street repairs take long enough that we need them!

    • @brianadixon8995
      @brianadixon8995 Před 6 měsíci +2

      Even if you don't do any canning methods on it just store the jar of water its still very useful. I heard an older lady used the water in the jar to make the water for the water bath or the steam.
      She also said, there is alwasy a way to heat and boil water, so if the water needs to be used as drinking water she just boils it and use it.

  • @essendossev362
    @essendossev362 Před 6 měsíci +174

    100% I'd put the apple butter with the jam. I'd also include the tomato soup with the "meals in jar" together in one spot. I tend to organize by function, not by base ingredients. In the case of your tomato products, it seems there's a lot of overlap, most are sauces which you are treated as an ingredient to a larger meal, so it fits in both frameworks to keep them together. But you can also do a mixed-type of organization, where say you keep all of the apple products in one spot, then have the apple butter grouped together as a kind of "intermediary" product, and then all the jams on the other side of the apple butter. That way, the apple butter is sort of near both, it acts as a kind of stepping stone between product types, by having something in common with both categories.
    I can SEE the decision fatigue on your face from the very beginning. Personally, I LOVE organizing, especially categorizing. I find something very zen in it. But as a tip on how to relax about it:
    1) if you got an idea, just try it. Don't worry if it's the wrong decision, you can fix it later. Sure it's more work, but sometimes you need to see it first in the wrong place in order to have the clever idea about where you DO want it to go. It's an exploration process. Approach it with curiosity, and you'll hopefully find it less stressful.
    2) if you DON'T have an idea, just make individual piles away from their final place, of each thing that's EXACTLY the same. Slowly, those piles will start to come together, you'll find similarities between groups, like you did with all the tomato products.
    BTW I wanna say I absolutely LOVE your basement food storage. It's aspirational. I've been dreaming of exactly a video showing how you organize that basement space (shelves & freezers) so I can show my mom what I aspire to with my food storage.

    Hi Becky, I would group my products like the grocery store groups their products. That way when you need an item you can shop your pantry like you would shop anywhere else, this also eliminates the chance of missing any items when your checking inventory. Just my two cents, no need to reinvent the wheel when we all generally know where to find specific items in our local grocery store. You’ve done an amazing job stocking your pantry, it looks beautiful.

    • @sweetjalight
      @sweetjalight Před 5 měsíci +1

      I came to comment the same thing lol. Becky you definitely did a great job I’m sure that was overwhelming at times just by the sheer amount of things. With organizing I tend to “start from scratch” and then I would clean the selves and jars. On the floor I would put everything in general categories like veggies, sauces, fruit etc. then I would start to map out how I’m putting it on the self. So I would put the apple butter with condiments like peanut butter, jelly, preserves, honey etc. kinda like the grocery store. I would put the ketchup with the “condiments”. I think the tomato soup could go with the meals in a jar. I would try to recreate store shelves, I would get some dividers so you can line things up easily. I would probably put some type of labels on the shelves as well.

    I have the same shelves that you do. I put bungee cords strung in the holes of the shelving to keep your jars from falling off the front/back. It has saved me more than once. My husband also had metal strips cut to fit across (front to back) the shelves and then put the boards back on. The metal supports the shelf. He used three strips per shelf.

    I was intrigued by your method of organizing your pantry. This summer was my "initiation" into the world of food preservation. I worked for Kroger for 10 years and as a consultant for another 4 years after I changed companies. It made sense to me when I was canning to organize my pantry (small, though it is) like I shop. If you shop at Kroger (or whatever grocers you do), you'll quickly learn how items are organized and why. All canned vegetables are together by "like" and brand. All meat products are together. Tomato products are the salt in the rub because you'll find your tomato sauces, diced tomatoes, and pastes are NOT where you will see the pasta sauces. Generally you condiment sauces are together and your meal-kits/meals-in-a-jar are separate. I knew ahead of time, before I started preservation and was creating my pantry space that I would follow this method of thought. I'm one of 3 adult cooks in my family. My husband and daughter are both phenomenal cooks and my goal was to make our canning pantry easy enough to "shop" what they may need for a meal without the constant "honey/mom, where did you put the______?!?!" Everyone knows my life motto is "Move Something," and I'm sure they get tired of hearing it as much as I get tired of repeating it!! So before I started I explained to everyone who cooks and those who helped this season how I was going to do this. I can't begin to tell you how much this has helped me not only in preserving our harvest but in knowing exactly what I have and where it is. The farm we live on has a 50 year old home that was a homestead of the original owners. The family built a quad garage in the lower level (never heard of that before) and there is a harvest/food pantry that is climate controlled off the back of the garage. This area is 12x30. It also has built-in shelving. While we did not need it for this season, our winter project is to eliminate a majorty of the items we are storing in there and create a means of using it for next years harvest. I intend to use the same organizing method I learned at Kroger in this pantry, as well. I have loved watching you along with many other's videos on pantry organizing and tours. No matter what I think I may do I'm always willing and love learning from those who have done it longer, and the "why's." This is probably going to be one I watch several times for sure!! ❤❤

    Better alternative to that bottled dressing: Place in crockpot: chicken, add 1/3 cup water, sprinkle one packet dry Italian dressing mix, one can cream of chicken soup and place brick of cream cheese. Set on low for 8 or less hours. Shred chicken when done and add cooked noodles (same as you did with this recipe). This has a fantastic flavor without the tart vinegar of the liquid dressing. *if chicken mixture is too thick - add some of the pasta water. Serve with a sprinkle of parm or romano cheese.

    So I saw on a food saver sight recently, that when you have extra jars, fill them with water, then you have water storage for if/when something happens and you don't have water available, instead of buying bottles of water......this person actually used their water during the 2021 snowstorm in Texas when the power was out for weeks, and they were able to share it with family and neighbors as well.... just a thought for those empty jars.😊
    Thank you for sharing, you are so amazing, your food storage blows my mind!!❤❤

    That looks brilliant Becky! To keep your wine in decent nick you really need a wine rack so you can keep them on their sides - When stored upright, the cork is only exposed to air, which means that it's likely to dry out over time. Wines that are placed on their side, on the other hand, means that the wine is in contact with the cork, helping to keep it moist. That's not a worry if you buy and drink fairly quickly, but if you're buying decent vineyard wine and keeping for maybe a year, a wee wine rack would be good. Doesn't need to be at all fancy.

    Something you should consider is freeze drying your bone broth. You could still store it in jars, but there is a tremendous reduction in volume and weight. You can also vary the intensity of the broth based on what you're using it for. I've been doing this for a couple of years and love it.

    Looking at your pantry makes me nervous from one point of view. I believe if you live in Southern Washington or Oregon you're on our lovely fault line. I hope your shelves are achored to the walls and I believe you can get some kind of retaining system in front of your jars. If we get the "big one" you'll be happy most of your pantry survived. You might also consider if you don't have the time is to get someone to take inventory for you and get it on a spreadsheet. I'm sure there are some easy systems so when you use a jar you know what you have. If you don't have the time it would be a great part time project for someone who wants some extra cash.

    My. Granny had shelves similar to your basement shelving. She went to the local hardware store and bought strips of thin wood, like yardsticks a and lined the inner side of each shelf to keep her jars from falling out or off the shelf. She used more of the wood strips to divide her food. This way she never opened a jar she thought was broth only to find out it was apple juice or whatnot. She had a label maker and named everything and dated it.

    "The canning jar shuffle," as I call it. My husband will find me in the basement, just staring at the pantry shelves, trying to plan my layout. Lol. Apple butter goes with the jam and jelly in our house. Applesauce goes with canned fruit. Sometimes it just comes down to what looks nicest. All soups next to each other makes sense but green beans between two soups breaks up the look and makes each recipe more separate (as some look so silimar). Thanks for keeping me company in the kitchen as I bake Christmas cookies.

I would love to see how much you end up using of the canned items at the end of the year. Maybe next year keep a spreadsheet of how much you put away in preservation season as you go then doing an inventory before you restart the garden would help keep you from having too much of any one thing? I love that you constantly reevaluate and adjust. I work best that way too. Experience is the best teacher sometimes I guess.

Do not lift heavy weights unnecessarily- you don’t want to end up like me at 60 odd and in constant pain! Use trolleys, steps, three trips instead of one. Accept help instead of doing it ALL yourself. I did way too much in my younger years and damaged myself.

I replaced those items and canned water, which did work after 2 attempts. Then, with high hopes, I canned chicken broth. The darn thing failed at the last 2 minutes... same code. So very frustrating! I immediately got in touch with Presto and they asked me to send the whole thing to them, which I did a month ago. I've not heard from them yet.

As a result I have defaulted to most food being in the basement storage pantry. Only things that are open and being used are kept in the kitchen. I keep a grocery bag in the basement and shop the basement once a day for the things I need for the day. I know what I have better this way. My freezer and refrigerator space is managed similarly with the kitchen reserved for open items that are being used and the rest stored in the garage freezer and refrigerator.

    I’d put the tomato soup with the other soups & meals in a jar. Ready to eat in one place for easy access. If it’s in with the other tomato products you won’t use it as often or remember you have it. And keep the apple butter with the jams and jelly’s. IMO 😊

      I never would have believed that I could so enjoy watching someone dust & mop but you, Becky, make every task so enjoyable & interesting. Thanks for being you. I hope you had a luxurious shower & a long sleep as you looked so tired at the end of the video. Cheers.

    Thoroughly impressed you didn't break any jars as you pushed them back and forth on the shelves! I kept reacting as if one was going to fall, especially when you placed them while talking to us and not looking! LOL

    Hi Becky, I have little Magnet signs on the shelves so my partner will know where to find things as well because it can be difficult if you are not the person who organized everything. It might also help you remember that you have sth. stored in a box or use see through boxes (e.g. from Ikea). I'm not yet decided - i like seeing whats in them but it also means it dorsn't look as tidy

      I was going to suggest the same! Magnet labels will be easy to move around if you need to, and will be so easy to personalize. That way, you don't have to hold all the names in your brain. You can let the signs refresh your memory and help you use your products better!

    Looks great Becky!!! It always feels good to get things organized & clean! Now that you have organized it the way that works for you, go take pictures.(One less brain bandwith to keep up with) That way you can just check your pictures and don't have to run down all the time. Plus, pantries are living things that change with use so take pictures like once a week. It could help in organizing your restock orders too. Looks beautiful!!

    Becky, I saw a video where a lady stored all her clean jars filled with tap water and capped. The jars stayed clean, and she had a supply of "bottled water" she didn't have to buy. She was prepared for an emergency such as a wster well pump going out, or a storm which strands you at home in the winter(or hurricanes, etc). I thought it was genius. Plus the jars also looked better filled with water. The wine will last longer stored on its side so the cork won't dry out and will remain sealed properly.

      So I use it in other cooking .
      I'm team tomato soup with other tomato things.😂❤

    Think about using Bulldog Clips with easily moveable (they’re magnetic) labels that you can move, replace, store when not in use, etc. so you don’t have to read jar lids while searching, just to confirm you have the right ones in hand.
    Also, suggest that Josh leave small aisles between clusters of jars for walking around next time he graciously transports them to the area for you.

    Personally I organize my pantry by how I use the item. I put jams jellies relishes and condiments together, then the ready to eat fruit products like apple sauce and peaches in the same vertical shelf. I have all of my baking and sweets stuff in one spot, all of my pastas and rices together, all of my bread crumbs crackers together, all of my canned veggies and fruit together. That way when I’m looking at my pantry making a meal plan I can look at one single shelf and say okay my veggie side options are green beans, corn, creamed corn or peas and carrots and they are all lined up together. It even goes down to what type of jam/jelly/apple butter we want opened for breakfast toast that week. I can see everything I have left in one spot so I can make sure we spread our favorites out over the season.

    I like the idea of your shelves walk around! That would make it so easy to put the new canning in the back so your always using the oldest first by pulling from the front. Great idea!
