Also adjusting the circular filter with the large glass in the main tray prove that they may have rushed this through, the hack is to make hole so the finger rotate VND filters as an access point
There are circular filter mounting rings available for the larger smallrig matte box, a 77 and 95 to 114 ring. They are $20 and are much easier to adjust as the matte box is bigger
Very nice and professional video :-) I have the matte box and it's good with small lenses like 67mm, but it's not very pleasant to us with larger 82mm filter size. There will be veeeery little space. If it's like NiSi ND filters with the little peg for easier turning, it will not work in there as the peg will hit the matte box walls and prevent you from turning it.
What was the thread size of the ND filter you put on the step-up ring before you attached it to the matte box? Also. Can you attach 2 circular filters on before you attach the matte box? or just one
You use the same size filter as the lens you’re running. So 82 for this video. The step up ring has a thread on the other side that is the same size as the lens you’re stepping up from.
To answer the question if the front thread will fit 82mm variable ND. maybe the Polar Pro 82mm yes. But if you have the 82mm Moment Variable ND it won’t fit
I have an 82mm mist filter and an 82mm nd filter. Am I able to use both of them at the same time on this Matt box or will I need a different size for one or the other? Thanks. Great video.
Hello, quick question. Do i need 95mm circular filters or normal 82mm will work with the matte box i am thinking of getting one and i want to see if my freewell magnetic system will work with it
Nice, just ordering this matt box for my BMPCC 4K to replace my tilta matt box (which won't fit one of the new Milvus lenses I'm ordering). Love the way it works with VNDs and other front filters....
I guess not all 82mm VND are the similar as it did not work with the Moment 2-5 VND due to its outer ring not fitting inside the Smallrig Mini Matte Box. I think I will have to go with something else like a PM, Nisi or Freewell.
Does the outer ring of the Moment completely not fit, or is it just too tight to turn? Does that mean the outer ring of the Moment is more than 95mm??? WHew!
Correct it does not fit at all due to the pronounced variable ring around the filter that hits the box angled surface preventing it from screwing at all. @@camerajames
Best $99 dollars I've spent on something that appears cheap and useless but is the exact opposite. A great option for any mirrorless cine applications and light as a feather! :)
Hi Chris, I am using step up rings to 82 mm, so all my radial filters are 82 mm. But I kind of wonder if I could at all use them with this mini matte box, since you are applying smallrig’s step up rings from x to 95 mm. Although smallrig‘s website says, „radial filters up to 92.5 mm possible“. I really can’t tell from the footage or the photos on the website how that might work. What do you think? 82 mm radial filters possible, and how? Great review, thx!
I just bought the smallrig box after watching your video, but the step ups are not threaded on two sides, but only on one side like you say in this video.... Now I can't use my ND filters....
Hi Chris, after watching this great video, I've purchased the mini Matte Box but ran into a problem with installing the 4 x 5.65 filter (as mentioned on their product page) whereas you talk about their square filters. Please, shed a light.
I need help. I have a Sony A9 and a Tamron 17-28mm lens and I’ve tried multiple variable ND filters but get a lot of vignette even at the 22mm focal distance. What filter do you recommend? I’ve tried larger filters with step down rings but want a system that would work with my lens. I’m open to larger square ND filters and it doesn’t have to be variable. I’m shooting only video outdoors in mostly bright light. Thank you.
What I can’t seem to find out is what the filter diameter on the front end of the adapter rings is? Are they all 82mm or is the size the same as the back? So right now I’m using a 67mm variable ND filter, and I wonder if that will still fit on one of those adapter rings. Or so I have to buy an 82mm variable ND filter that fits on all the rings?
Update: I bought the mini matte box and indeed each filter adapter ring has an inside diameter that’s the same as the lens diameter. So that means you’ll still have to use an adapter ring for your round variable ND filter, or make all your lenses the same size first with step up rings
Has anyone tried attaching multiple filters before mounting the Matte Box on? So I have 77mm filters: Promist, a circular polarizer and a variable ND filter. I know it may be asking for too much but I wanted to add these plus the Mattebox on a BMPCC 4k. I think worst case scenario I can attach two filters and just use 4x6 fixed ND fillters.
Just wished it worked with my Haida magnetic variable ND. Terrific and convenient variable ND filter if you've never checked it out. Basically like the Freewell magnetic fixed filters but as a variable version. Unfortunately its outside diameters larger than the 92.5mm max on the mini mattebox. Otherwise easily seems like the best out of the super budget options as far as versatility goes
So, that ND filter is an 82 or a 95? Do I need to buy the filter in the lens size or to the matte box size? Sorry, I'm new in all this and want to build a rig
Have you tried the Mattebox with the 24-70 next to you? Is there vignetting at 24mm especially in combination with a VND? Would be so helpful if you could answer 🙏🙌🏼
I got the tilta the benefit of the other large mattbox from small rig is that it took 4x4 filter which this new one does not ,ok you can stack the larger filters but I would us one circle filter and square ...they missed a trick here 4x4, someone should make a 3D printed adapter it’s not hard I will.
The thread on the bottom is for the matte box support. It's not for mounting it on a tripod (like another video suggested) nor it is for mounting other things to it .
Hello, I have bought the mattebox 2660 and I want to use it with my tamron 24-70 mm (filter 82mm) and a VND filter 82mm. Which ring must I buy ? Thanks in advance for your help. Jacques
Hello.. I actually have a question about 2660 model.. I am planning to buy 95mm vnd.. do you think I could use 95mm vnd with 2660 model..? Because I hear that there's new ring for vnd for 2660 (SmallRig Screw-In Reduction Ring Set with Filter Thread for Matte Box 2660 3410) but I was not sure if 95mm filter would fit inside the 2660 matte box.. I would be grateful if you could let me know..
Thanks for the great video! What size ND filter do you think would be the max size to fit in there? I purchase the mini lite, but could not fit my 82mm ND from tiffen, I know it’s a big ND filter, but just wondering if this matte box is bigger. Thanks again!!
Yes, so it’s going to really depend on the ND filter you purchase or have. The Tiffen ND I have seem to have a larger diameter then others. So in my case I got a smaller Tiffen, but I have had people tells me that there ND fit fine.
I have the sirui 35mm anamorphic for my gh5 and the lens flare, although geurgeous, not suitable for professional work. I do real estate and mostly do outdoors stuff, so i’m looking into buying this one. But can anyone tell me if just the flap on one side gets the job done or would i need it on sides too to get rid of any leaks or flares?
You mentioned that it will take square filters (100x100) but the product page says they're not compatible. Is there a method of fitting them regardless?
Would the weight of maytte box with stepup ring effect some of the cheaper glass? i have some 77mm lenses but would be awesome to use this box as a run and gun with the cheaper Canon RF 35mm 1.8 and Canon RF34mm 1.8.
Hi, great video. I use a vnd from Haida, is for 82mm lenses but the front glass is 100 mm diameter, do you think i will use this vnd with this mattebox? Thanks bro
does 3575 version will have the same posibilities to mount vnc filters or 96 version is more flexibe, cause I am selling my tilta mini mattebox to get smallrig and have an option to mount simmod vnd filter cause it's immpossible in titla mini xD
Could you please shed some light on something I was wondering? The step-up rings got on the respective lens filter size - so in your case an 82 mm and the filter you used is an 82 mm as well? So if I would like to mount a 67 mm lens and the respective step-up ring, I would need to use a 67 mm thread ND filter, correct? If so, that would mean that if I have an 82 mm VND, the best thing to do would be to use two step-up rings - in the case of a 67 mm lens - 67 to 82, then the Smallrig step-up ring and the 82 mm VND, and then finally attaching the Matte Box. Thanks for the great video!
Try and find step up rings that will cover the most distance, i.e a 67-82 opposed to a 67-72, 72-82 that way you can reduce any vignetting on wider rings. But otherwise what you say is exactly the process
@@chrisbrockhurst Yes, I always use one step up up ring only. But some times I use a Balck pro mist filter and that adds some length, re: adds to vignette.
I have a 24-105 with the matte box attached at 24mm there’s a lot of vignetting, anything from 35mm and up it’s fine even with my 20mm the vignetting is very very noticeable!
Hello.. May I ask what kind of matte box are you using now for your 95mm peter mckinnon edition vnd..? Because I'm looking for a matte box that I could use with 95mm PMVND..? I would be so grateful if you could help me..
it mounts so far forward on the Mini Matte Box that pretty much no lens but telephoto lenses will be usable with that. Also note that it also states that only true 4x4 filters with 4mm thickness can be used and the cheaper 100x100mm filters won't work without mod. So... there is no use for this option as the small 100x100 glass is way too far away from the lens
@@MEBoisv I considered that, too but Tilta VND has such a heavy green cast and vnd X when closing it down more than ND2 to ND2.8 that it is barely usable. Your best bet will be high quality screw on VND together with the Matte Box Mini. The smaller the VND range, the better the quality. See Peter McKinnon VND‘s or similar. They should realistically stop down 5 ev maximum to be visually acceptable
@@MEBoisv good to hear! I saw different results with and without the Tilta VND. Maybe they improved? I for my part will go the Smallrig Matte Box Pro route with 82mm VND‘s and the corresponding step up rings.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but it can take any size circular filters. So if you use for example 67mm lens just use the 67mm adapter ring which comes with the kit and it will take 67mm filters on front. Same thing with any size. Or if you have bigger filters with smaller lens thread size you can just use a step up ring.
So how does the mini mattebox work with a large size screw on filter, lets say 82mm, with a smaller size filter thread size of the lens (like 72mm)? I hope you understand the question.
@@chrisbrockhurst Yeah what I meant was: you probably need an additional step down ring to attach a larger filter to a smaller filter thread size lens. But how does that work when hou also need the adapter to attach the mattebox to the lens?
Hi Chris! Bought the matte box based on your recommendation. Do you use a matte box on every camera being used to film a wedding? I will usually have 2 cameras on sticks during ceremony and have one camera on me to get handheld stuff during the day.
@@chrisbrockhurst ahh that's good to know! i believe the 82mm should be the largest filter thread size for lenses, i guess it's safe for all other sizes then..thanks for the input Chris!
I wish they would sell the adapter rings separately. It's such a waste that you have to buy the entire kit. I have three Canon FD lenses with a 55mm filter thread. I really don't want to buy the adapter ring set three separate times for 35€ each. Sadly, there aren't even any third-party alternatives that also feature the internal filter thread. On the topic of the filter thread. Is it uniformly sized across all adapter rings? And what diameter is it? Smallrig's website only states "up to 93,5mm" which is utterly unhelpful :P.
Hi Chris. My Peter McKinnon variable ND filter (82mm) won’t fit the matte box ring for my Sony 24-105 4.0 Goss lens. Any clue what size variable ND filter will fit with this combination? The step up ring I’m using for this lens is 95-77.
You probably need to use a stepup 77-82 on your Sony 24-106 (77 thread) then use Smallrig 82-95 adapter ring (which will probably then take PolarPro 82mm). An alternative is to buy another PolarPro 77mm VND - but that's a more expensive fix. I'd be interested to know with 100% certainty if the PM PolarPro 82mm VND does indeed fit with enough clearance to operate the VND if choosing the 82mm size. I tried the new Haida 3-7 stop VND with circular polariser but even with the side handle unscrewed it wouldn't fit as outer diameter of 82mm Haida ring is virtually same size as 95mm outer diameter of 82mm Smallrig 82-95 adapter. In effect the matte box fits very 'snug' over a pre-attached Haida 82mm VND such that it's impossible to operate. The only (totally impractical) work around is to remove matte box, set Haida ND 3-7 stops, unscrew Haida 'side handle (that sets ND) then re-attache the matte box.
What he and every other review I’ve seen on this matte box have failed to mention, if you use e.g the NISI VND filters that have a handle on them, you’re fucked! They simply won’t be able to turn in the limited room inside the Mattebox.
Anybody else love how smallrig uses part numbers for their stuff? so easy to search and find.

Looks like you need a 95mm ND filter?
How does it work for you stacking VND and pola's, don't you get the blackout?
Have you tried this on the sigma 24-70 you got there? I tried the tilta version and got terrible vignetting all the way up to like 50mm or so.
24-70 works fine!
Ya absolutely love to hear it
I have a 24-105 with the matte box attached at 24mm there’s a lot of vignetting, anything from 35mm and up it’s fine even with my 20mm the vignetting is very very noticeable!
I got this matte box but it wouldn't fit on my PMVND 95mm! had to return it... so confused
Hello.. May I ask what kind of matte box are you using now for your 95mm peter mckinnon edition vnd..? Because I'm looking for a matte box that I could use with 95mm PMVND..? I would be so grateful if you could help me..
What size round fikters does this use. Thankx
hello whats ur lens brand ?
Question un viltre de diamètre 95mm passe dans la matte boxe ?
SmallRig is releasing a tray for the Mini Matte Box that takes 4" square filters! And it's only $9.90 at B&H!
it mounts so far forward on the Mini Matte Box that pretty much no lens but telephoto lenses will be usable with that. Also note that it also states that only true 4x4 filters with 4mm thickness can be used and the cheaper 100x100mm filters won't work without mod. So... there is no use for this option as the small 100x100 glass is way too far away from the lens
@@PRHeli I've since decided that I'm getting a Tilta Mirage VND instead
@@MEBoisv I considered that, too but Tilta VND has such a heavy green cast and vnd X when closing it down more than ND2 to ND2.8 that it is barely usable. Your best bet will be high quality screw on VND together with the Matte Box Mini. The smaller the VND range, the better the quality. See Peter McKinnon VND‘s or similar. They should realistically stop down 5 ev maximum to be visually acceptable
@@PRHeli I heard that too, but I’ve had the chance to use one and thankfully that is total BS
@@MEBoisv good to hear! I saw different results with and without the Tilta VND. Maybe they improved?
I for my part will go the Smallrig Matte Box Pro route with 82mm VND‘s and the corresponding step up rings.
It takes 95mm filters right?
If so then it’s a no go for me cuz all my filters r 82mm 🤦♂️
Step down rings should alleviate, I think?
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but it can take any size circular filters. So if you use for example 67mm lens just use the 67mm adapter ring which comes with the kit and it will take 67mm filters on front. Same thing with any size. Or if you have bigger filters with smaller lens thread size you can just use a step up ring.
exactly.
Someone can tell me what size of these VND filters are? 82mm?
So how does the mini mattebox work with a large size screw on filter, lets say 82mm, with a smaller size filter thread size of the lens (like 72mm)? I hope you understand the question.
82mm filters work with no issue. Thats what I tested this with
@@chrisbrockhurst Yeah what I meant was: you probably need an additional step down ring to attach a larger filter to a smaller filter thread size lens. But how does that work when hou also need the adapter to attach the mattebox to the lens?
Hi Chris! Bought the matte box based on your recommendation. Do you use a matte box on every camera being used to film a wedding? I will usually have 2 cameras on sticks during ceremony and have one camera on me to get handheld stuff during the day.
for weddings I typically wouldn't use them much, so much running around its a pain to have them on sometimes!
how's the usability of the VND with the mattebox on though? looks pretty restrictive to me..what's your thoughts on that? was it hard to adjust?
great video nonetheless, thanks for showing us the smaller variant! :)
my 82mm turns pretty easier, anything larger might be a challenge
The only (totally impractical) work around is to remove matte box, set Haida ND 3-7 stops, unscrew Haida 'side handle (that sets ND) then re-attache the matte box.
can u use a zoom lens with this?
Will those rings work with the larger matte box?
can u pass me the link of your hand strap please
Screw on up to what size? Tilta takes upto 77mm no problem but the 82mm fit too tight...
82 works no problem
What he and every other review I’ve seen on this matte box have failed to mention, if you use e.g the NISI VND filters that have a handle on them, you’re fucked! They simply won’t be able to turn in the limited room inside the Mattebox.
I have an 82mm nisi vnd filter. I’m just hoping it will fit. Can live without the handle
Great video 👌 was wondering what hand strap you’ve got on your camera in the video?
Tilta, ive added a link in the description for you
