If you plan to grow most anything at all in the place where you are using this for weeds I would skip the salt entirely. You don't need it anyway if you use a high strength vinegar. The vinegar will eventually evaporate but you will be stuck with that salt for some time to come. I would also skip any dish soap. Alternatively you can use boiling water. After it cools us the high strength vinegar. But you want to use the boiling water first and let it cool. This works for most weeds. I kill poison ivy all the time with boiling water but you Have to be sure it won't get on other plants or roots that you do want to keep.

I ordered the 30% vinegar from Amazon. While I am waiting for my Prime 2-day delivery (2 weeks for this 30% vinegar) I used the 5% vinegar. It does work, but like you said, not as well. I sprayed last Saturday and it did help a LOT. I sprayed again today. The 30% will be here next week and should take care of all current weeds! So much safer and less expensive than the chemical solutions. Thank you.

Very good. Baking soda mixed in water will kill crabgrass but I don't think the results are as fast as what you showed but baking soda is dirt cheap. Mix 16 Oz of baking soda to 2 gallons of water and saturate the leaves of the undesirable weeds. It typically will not hurt turf grasses but it may cause some yellowing and it may slightly stunt the growth of turf grasses but it will snap back.

Not sure about the 30% part. First time hearing of 30% for me. I buy white vinegar from the store and mix it in the same proportions you mentioned with salt and dish washing liquid. I use original Dawn because that was what I read in the first recipes I saw. I also strayed away from the Epsom salt recipes like you and chose table salt. If you do it in the sun like you mentioned it works great. One thing you didn't mention was that it has no residual action. It kills weeds efficiently and quickly, but new ones will come back. Even with that said, it is so easy to do it again with the same results. Thanks for a great video.

Vinegar allows the soil to recover but when you add salt, you can’t plant there ever again. Vinegar and Dawn dish detergent will kill weeds and allow you to plant within a week or two (erring on side of caution at 2 weeks)..

Can't stress enough protecting yourself when using strong vinegar. Wearing sandals as video showed is a no no. You don't want this on your skin.
Rubber gloves and eye protection are a must. Also you don't want to use salt around any plants etc you want to remain healthy. Master gardeners will tell you that increasing salt concentrations in planted areas is a very bad idea. If you're just killing weeds in cracks of landscaping gravel that's fine otherwise avoid the salt. 20-30 percent vinegar will be fine on its own around plants you like. Do shield them with cardboard to avoid any spray drift.
Remember you've moved from a household salad dressing to a strong chemical and act accordingly.

It kills the plant so it will never grow again. Of course a new plant (weed) can come along and grow there unless you used a lot of salt. Salt will stop anything from growing there again. Kind of a bad idea because it's permanent. A drive way or side walk would be a good idea, but imagine spraying high salt content on weeds near a bush - it could get ugly.

Did it hurt/kill any of nearby plants from soaking into the ground? How close did you get to them?

We have not noticed that being an issue. We were fairly close to some plants, but also made sure to just spray the ones we wanted gone. -Steph

Did the plants grew back or it also killed the roots? And will I be able to plant something in the ground afterwards? I have a real problem in my garden with Aegopodium podagraria. It a is highly invasive plant and the only solution is to dig out all its roots, which are very long and brittle. This is a really tedious work. Using vinegar could be an ideal solution for me, but before I buy litres of acid I'd like to know if it won't destroy the soil and if it will actually get to the roots? Maybe you have some solution for this weed? Please help!

FYI - As a chemist I used to use glacial acetic acid (acetic acid is pure vinegar), 100% acetic acid, no water, in the laboratory as a solvent. So unlike hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, which are both gases dissolved in water (example: hydrogen chloride for hydrochloric acid), "vinegar" can be distilled until little to no water remains. (Generally distillation is used until an azeotrope with water is reached, then the remaining water is removed via various techniques.)

It has to be ordered online. Their picture showed Distilled and that is worthless just like regular vinegar. Has to be the 30% but that costs almost as much as some ergonomic ones already mixed.

    • @josieditzler7332

I bought a gallon of 45% vinegar ($20 on Amazon) that gets diluted (1:1) so you get 2 gallons worth. I used it on my daughter’s very healthy, vigorous seed producing poison ivy growing straight up the the middle of an evergreen bush. Sprayed it a few times over the course of a week and that ivy is dead, dead, dead. Some needles on the bush took a hit but I suspect it will recover.
