Hasek,is in my mind, the greatest goaltender of all time. His NHL career was absolutely brilliant. 6 Vezinas, Stanley Cups. Look at the Sabre roster the year he took them to the SCF. Its hard to believe any goaltender could take a club like that, that far. Of course, the guy that did it, is the same goalie that won an Olympic Gold, with all due respect, carrying a mishmash of fringe NHLers, and European pros, against hockeys heavyweight nations. Im not sure, but I think he posted a GAA of under 1 in 6 games in that Gold medal campaign.

Hasek was crazy. I miss those times when they considered "crazy skill boiled with luck" as atribute. Nowadays it's too much about Excel. No more short agile goalies. We have robots to cout and predict. No space to risk anything.

Datsyuk played with Hull in his rookie season. He became Brett Hull's favorite player the first time they practiced together.

Datsyuk was actually passed over in multiple drafts.
He was on 3rd eligible draft by time he was chosen.
Granted, Russian players could be drafted until about age 25 back then.
He also won Olympic gold as team Captain.
Won Gagarin cup with Dynamo Moskva in the 04-5 lockout season. Winning another Gagarin cup after his return to Russia while he was injured at SKA St. Petersburg.
One of the best to ever play. Thief on the ice.

I love how 4 of the 6 players on this list were on the 2002 Red Wings roster, and five would have been on the 2003 Red Wings roster if Hasek hadn't left.

Zetterberg as a kid growing up played versus adults. There were not enough kids his age in his area, so he joined the adult leagues and learned how to hold his own while getting pushed around, honing those puck possession type abilities he was known for. Never an elite skater he was very astute in understanding the game space, passing lanes and working along the boards. Maybe one of the smartest forwards the club has ever had maybe next to Larionov.
Gretzky stated that Zetterberg was his favorite player to watch and that says a lot.
Detroit discovering Zetterberg and Datsyuk were just an incredibly rare instance in draft history.

With the exception of Gilmore the Great, all of the others won Stanley Cups in Detroit. I didn't see Gilmore play much, but I could tell he was special.

Henrik Lundqvist? He was drafted in the seventh round and had an outstanding career with the Rangers. The Rangers announced that his number would be retired the day after he announced he was retiring. He's being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame the first year he's eligible. Number six in all time wins. He holds almost every record there is for a goalie in the Ranger's organization. And he is genuinely an all around nice guy.

Great organisation, with great ownership that was willing to go out and get what they needed to win. They could easily have won another 3 Cups with a few breaksl That was in the pre salary cap era. Those days are gone now and it's going to take alot to build any kind of dynasty like we saw before. Yzerman seems to have the new system in place to win over a good long period of time like he did in Tampa. We'll see! He is the Red Wings "Achilles" and they will live and die with him over the next few years .

Hakan Andersson, who has been a scout for the Wings since 1990, deserves all the praise.

The Hawks pick of Hasek was more of a shot in the dark as Czecoslovakian players weren't exactly free to come over.
Similar to Tretiak in 83 when he was drafted by Montreal. Montreal were one of the pioneers of drafting Soviet players, they just never had success with converting them to be NHL stars.
Funnily enough, Tretiak was Chicago's goalie coach when Belfour/Hasek were there. Tretiak also did some work with Brodeur and Theodore in his goaltending school.
Tretiak the unofficial Goalie Whisperer had an amazing career as a player to boot.
Buffalo also exposted Hasek in the expansion drafts as they just aquired Fuhr at that time. None of the expansion teams claimed him.

2:36 Hakan Andersson (head of European scouting for the Redwings), is probably the best hockey scout ever. He has pulled out so many late rounds gems the past 30+ years. Still does it. Picking Mo Seider at six was a big upset but then he won the Calder, Raymond finished 4th. Keep an look at Kasper, Edvinsson, Soderblom, Wallinder etc.
If a scout could be inducted the hall of fame, Hakan Andersson should be the first.

Luc was a GREAT player! Glad he got his name on the cup in Detroit. He deserved it. "Z" was awesome, too bad his back shortened his career. By the numbers there was nobody better than Hasek - EVER!

Being a top scorer in junior doesn't correlate to having an NHL career.
As an exercise, look up list of 100+ point players from last 30 years in OHL.
You'll be surprised how many never even become NHL regulars.
    Take 1999 fore example.
Sheldon Keefe spent more time as a coach than a player in the NHL.
Norm Miley totalled 29 games in the NHL.
    Jason Jaspers a mere 9.
    Dennis Shvidki 79
Outside of Keefe, an average fan likely knows of none of them. And Keefe for his coaching rather than playing career.

I see a trend here, lots of Detroit players making this list. They've been known to get the bottom feeders that other teams overlook and as a result turned into NHL superstars. I hope Yzerman in the saddle and the rest of the management keep this trend going. LGRW!
