There are many pros and cons between cream / grease paint, water or alcohol activated makeup types. Even if you have a favorite you like to stick with, it is still important to understand the key differences. All three of these makeup types have there place in your makeup journey.

Wonderful, thank you so very much for your help and advice. So you are stippling the Mel Pax as well as using it as a corrector right. The first time I did the tattoo coverage on her I just used a regular orange corrective concealer with powder underneath then I airbrushed the Mel Pax (tan tone skin color) and originally it seemed fine, but then the second time I did the concealer/powder step, then I added a full coverage foundation to cover and blend the edges and powdered it, and then used the Mel Pax on top of both those steps (I don't know why but I thought it would be faster and more coverage... ugh, I should have known better and totally think that was my issue in hindsight, It must have been just too much product). You are awesome, thanks again for your help!!!

I’ve worked with greasepaints for a long time and have just recently started using Mehron Paradise paints. I’ve found I like the water activated colors a lot better than greasepaints just because I dislike the stickiness of them. I am curious about alcohol activated paints, but am a bit hesitant due to the price tag. I would eventually like to “graduate” to using them, though. Thank you so much for this informative breakdown. It’s very helpful.

Your videos are super underrated and such an amazing help for people getting into SFX prosthetics and makeup (like me). I do have a question with regards to something I've seen come up from some other videos: putting skin barriers/skin prep on before applying prosthetics or heavy makeup. Do you recommend doing that or sticking with clean, dry skin? I see that PPI Premiere Products sells Telesis Top Guard, but I've also seen products mentioned like "Skin Saver" or "Dermashield." If you recommend any skin prep, what do you typically use?
Thank you so much! I personally stick to clean dry skin...most of the time. However if you are concerned about sweating under the makeup a prep like Top Guard or Mehron Skin prep is very handy. Dermashield is great for protecting the skin with multiple applications of prosthetic makeups in a small time frame. Or if there are skin sensitivity concerns having that barrier is the way to go.

Glad you liked the info 🥰 I always use Skin Illustrator Zero Color Powder for everything. Mehron and RCMA have good translucent powders too. 😊
I love your videos, they are so informative, especially for airbrush and SFX work. I have a question(s) and wanted to pick your brain and get some advice. I am working out of town on a swimsuit pageant and the woman I am working with has lots of large tattoos (half sleeves on both arms and some on her side). I need to cover them up and make them disappear. For the preliminary pageant, I used Mel Pax and it was okay, but not as good as I had hoped (maybe some user error...lol). So then I was thinking that an alcohol-based airbrush colors/foundation would be a better option, But I would love to get your opinion and thoughts. So far I have been looking into European Body Art and the Skin Illustrator liquids for the airbrush. If possible I would like to find a product that will not transfer and will last in different conditions (like water) as well as days or until taken off). Anyway sorry for the long message, I would just really appreciate any advice or help with this project. Thanks so much.

My go to technique with tattoo cover is to use Mel Pax for the corrector color then stipple over a base color. Covering the tattoo about 80%, the stippling will keep from any hard lines on the outer edges. Then going over with a couple Skin Illustrator colors to finish covering the tattoos fully. I seal with Skin Illustrator Green Marble Sealer for extra protection. It will be transfer and waterproof all day. I have had actors return to set the following day and the tattoos are still fully covered. If it is a high friction area, it is less likely to last into the next day without needing touch ups.
What white paint do you recommend?
Graftobian and Mehron are what I always use. Wolfe FX had a really good white too but I haven’t used them in a few years. They have had changes in the company so don’t know if the has been any formula changes.
