About Me:
My name is David Hoffmann. Since starting David’s Been Here in 2008, I have traveled to over 1,400 destinations in 98 countries to experience and document unique cultures on my CZcams channel, travel blog, and social media.
I highlight culture and historical sites, but my passion is food! I love to experience and showcase the different flavors each destination has to offer, from casual street food to gourmet restaurant dining.
Thanks for watching and subscribing!
What I love about China is their ability to keep the family unit together. Men & women both work hard, but both UNDERSTAND & KNOW their role to better family then better society.
China's currency is RMB yuan and not yen, that's Japanese currency not accepted in China.
Approx. $1 USD=6.91 yuan, $1 USD= ¥137.41 yen.
People could be confused when you're confused.
$1 usd = 7.18 CNY as of 6.21.23
A lot of people don't like 3-4 hr videos. However, I enjoy a full experience video! From the housing accommodations, to food including breakfast lunch and dinner plus snacks. Prices and conversions. Entertainment and observations of the natural culture of Shanghai
not everyone is jobless
China is so so beautiful and the way they have preserved their Buddhist heritage is heartwarming (when I visited in 2018)
I hope they continue to protect and promote the Dharmic traditions to the world
this city is amazing! Love china!!
Buddhism originated in ancient India and was carried to China by Gautama Buddha.. Indian Buddhist priest named Bodhidharma was the founder of Kung Fu and carried it to China around 527 AD.
@@justkool-cy4ms 你说这些好像印度还有人信佛教一样。佛教在印度已经死了。😊
And yet you have dumpped them all into Ganges@@justkool-cy4ms
@@justkool-cy4ms In fact, India only had the concept of a country mainly because of the British invasion. It has been a small tribe for a long time in the past. Geographically speaking, the birthplace of Buddhism should be Nepal.

David. Didn’t know you visited Shanghai. Dropping these older vids for we new viewers are great but I’m behind cuz they’re long. Watching as much as I can. I’m 45 minutes in and it’s almost 4 hrs long. I’ll say the food does look amazing. Hope you’re enjoying your Friday and have a great weekend.
I am pleased that you can objectively and truthfully showcase the charm of China. The Chinese people always welcome friendly foreign travelers. I wish you a delightful time exploring China.
I Super LOVE This Consecutive Part Playlist Format! SO MANY YT Food and Travel Vloggers REALLY SCREW THIS FORMAT UP, BUT YOU MOST CERTAINLY DID NOT!
Wow thank you so much for saying that Carey! I truly appreciate that!
Very nice sharing zabdast video

All of the tour guides were awesome! Watching David makes me hungry! Where can I get some good Chinese food??
Keep it coming subscribed! ❤
Love the video. Hopefully you can make more videos in China in the future.
I'm so hooked on watching you! ❤
Guangzhou with its authentic Cantonese food is the best. There are Eight Major Regional Chinese Cuisines in China, and Cantonese is famous with a saying “eat in Guangzhou”. So next time, check out all the gourmet food in Guangzhou as well, another first-tiered city in China. ❤❤❤
This is So Beautiful ❤
What an awesome adventure! Thank you for taking us with you!
Awesome😍
Good morning David love the place ❤❤❤
Love your content David, especially this one was my favorite. What kind of lenses do you use btw? As an amateur photographer i really like your shoots. Thank you for the great content 👏🏻👏🏻
Just subscribed. Got to your YT video accidentally. Nice job highlighting your dining/eating experiences: lots of closeups of what you're eating; good descriptions of how the food tastes.
Thank you so much and welcome to the channel! Great to have you. Have a beautiful Sunday evening and thanks for the comment.
That green and gold number is absolutely gorgeous
Yaaas I've been a sub for about a little over a year now I can watch your videos from beginning to end multiple times and that says a lot
Wow thank you so much for saying that Jasmine. I really appreciate the kind words and wishing you an amazing week.
excellent
Interesting Documentary Davidsbeenhere I liked this video yes!!!!👍😅
I'm so glad you enjoyed it Lita! Thank you!!
Holy cow, deer/dear David. OMG. How much more can you improve on these documentaries!!! I loved how you transitioned from one video to the next: so effortlessly. I am finally done with this one and then Suriname popped up and I still have Mexico next. Loved ALL the food, from the dumplings, baos, wontons (no red meat for me), to the noodles (I find the Shanghai noodles too thick and doughy. We get it here in Toronto from the mall eatery.) The way they put the soup inside the dumplings is that they make the broth, add gelatin, freeze it, cut it in cubes and then put one inside the dumpling along with the meat and when you heat it up, the cube melts et voila. The open-faced dumpling is called shu mai which I love. I noticed that you left one (was that one for me?) LoL. Anyway, I enjoyed this one with all the little nuggets of history you put into it. Huge, clean and very well kept and maintained city. Can't ask for more. To quote you, "one more thing", did you ever go to Hong Kong? Would be very interested to see how it is today since Britain handed it back to China. Anyway, I am trying to keep it short because 4 hours are a long time. Job well done. So now I am jetting off to Ciudad Mejico and then to the one you posted this morning. David, you are a beast, hahaha. Have a great weekend.
agreed true dat :)
@@YA-st2ye 👍🤗
Bruh, Hong Kong handover was almost 30 years ago, a bit funny to be asking this question right now.
@@shineluvslambiel I am not a bruh and it's never too late to keep up with what's going on in other parts of the world. I know it was a long time ago but these days we hardly hear anything about Hong Kong. So I am a female not your bruh and there is nothing funny about asking this question.
@@JudyT868 why are you triggered by the word bruh? It’s not referring to your gender but a new form expression, go look it up and educate yourself. Also I think you mean you don’t hear about Hong Kong these days, but we constantly hear about it, so it’s just you.
Davidsbeenhere thanks you very much, never been to Shanghai.
it's awesome.
cooool🎉want that pot
semoga saya juga bisa berkeliling keberbagai negara untuk mencicipi makananya yang lezat..
Omggggg how is this only 5 months ago? You look like a totally different person!!! 😊
Its originally recorded a couple years ago thats why! It was a compilation of some of my China Travels in Shanghai! Hope you had a great weekend too!
In California, we call the "you tiao" a "Chinese Donut". It's also used as an accompaniment for congee (Cantonese porridge). The Shanghainese breakfast you had is similar to what is enjoyed in Taiwan. Lots of cross-over between the two.
When I Lived in NYC, I ate at a High End Chinese Restaurant that Specialized in Black Rice with Different Marinated Beef Options, and I have been trying to find a restaurant that serves similar beef options with that black rice and have not been able to find any!
Since Leaving NYC, I Have Lived in Hong Kong Twice, and Nepal Once!
Amazing, just thinking about some black rice with marinated beef is getting me ready for an early lunch LOL. Hope you are doing really well to carey, wishing you peace and blessings in the new year.
I am 🤤 just an hour in. It’s very entertaining to watch your reactions 👍 This is a mini drama series 😂 You filmed this back 2019?

2:55:00 - David you’re so pie-eyed from the beer you look like you’re about to fall asleep in your noodles! 😂😂

David stay safe with all these natural disasters, make sure you have a plan just in case. I am praying for you and all my CZcams friends out there in the world.
Thank you so much Susan. I live in Miami so we are always at risk to a large scale hurricane and so I do try to have a plan in place! Sending you peace and blessings as well Susan. Hope you are also in a place that is low risk area for natural disaster too! Really great to see you again too, I actually reread your other comment today and was very appreciative.

"100 Hours in Shanghai"... this weekend in a theater near you!
yes sir!!
This was Shanghai many years ago, and now it has changed a lot.
GODBLESS
The Chinese food looks delicious.
Breakfast is my favorite food in the world and spicy sauces but cant go crazy with the spice that early. I have no gallbladder and have colitis but i still enjoy my food searching journeys. I love sweet hot sauce if you plan on making anything like that. Like a spicy hoisin or sweet heat teriyaki
Sorry to hear about your serious health-problems. Are they related to eating too much? Or heavy consumption of meats? Fried foods? I learned that the gallbladder assists with digestion of fats; so overeating fatty foods could overwork the small organ. Colitis tends to reflect two problems: too much acidic food (e.g. meats) . . . and too little fibre (found only in foods from plants/Nature).
wow great video. how was the process getting the visa for a US citizen
When you eat Haidilao, you have not even go to the sauce station to adjust your own sauce. This is the big big wrong way to eat it❌😂 As a Chinese, I can’t stand it anymore😂
I knew someone would pick this up. I just cannot believe the staff did not take them to the sauce station.
David, the sauce will also help cool down the food
The soup dumpling - you need to take a bite to open it, drink the soup inside and then eat the dumplings. This is the way how you eat it while it is still hot without burning yourself
Clothes - if they ask you for 89 yuan, just pay about 20-40.
Oh Lee is great!!
Hey David, why didn't you take the dipping sauce from Haidilao (hot pot)? Is the most important in any hot pots restaurants.. /From a long time Shanghai residence :)
1:03:52 Wish I knew if those noodles had a specific name, they look delicious.
I Love yhe *Maglev" do Amazing!!❤🎉🎉😂
Just watched Indian food videos in india was shocked how dirty they were then clicked on this video and expected China shouldn't be cleaner than India but was amazed how clean and modern China is
Just wondering when was the trip made😊
❤😂🎉 Must be Sarachi sauce
New to your channel very cool!
I like street food
Love the food
Thank you share your video and You need to Submit Shanghai video for Travel Channel. You will be Awesome. 8 part Series on China. I never been in Shanghai China. Wish I can afford go to visit China. Oooo looks dope…. Is it hard process to get in for international travelers?
Easy. Use google translate to communicate with people, Chinese people and policmen always love to help you out❤
when was this filmed?
❤❤❤❤❤❤
David when you eat noodles it eat means slurping and it was called by the old legend " SassEsnacks " I have learnt from her ASMR channel one of the early legends in food and ASMR, sadly she passed away from cancer. 😞😓😢
My Producer is an ASMRtist and knows of SassEsnacks. Very sad what happened indeed.
You are a strong woman
Never put the whole xiaolongbao into your mouth when it's still hot. The correct way to eat it is to put it in a spoon, tear a small hole and the upper side and let the steam out, sip all the soup in it, and then eatthe whole thing.
When did you make the video, this looks like Shanghai 7-10 years ago
Wow eating hotpot without the dipping sauce, thats a first
Love from INDIA (ASSAM)
Going to release Assam doc soon!!!
@@Davidsbeenhere most welcome
Okay as the video got into the middle part you changed into yourself but in the beginning you were sounding and acting like Mark, I liked it when you were yourself with your own voice and mannerisms whole demeanor changed I liked that. Be yourself David you are in China and people out here love seeing other countries and you are bringing them that, just be yourself, don't try and be someone else.
I honestly appreciate you sharing this comment and I do welcome constructive criticism. However, I do recommend checking out my recent videos because I did change a lot since 4 years ago. I understand where you are coming from and to be honest everybody was kind of making that style 4 years ago because Mark was at the top of this genre. That said, things have moved forward and CZcams itself has changed a lot. I appreciate you suggesting authenticity and I agree with you fully. I hope you will feel that my newer content is more authentic and I wish you a great week too.
@@Davidsbeenhere I sat and watched a more recent video and loved it. I heard you and experienced your authentic self. I am sorry if i hurt you but I was cooking and I didn't even know it was not Mark but it sounded like Mark and then I looked and it was you not Mark. I was like even the wooo thing is Mark and that is why I said something. What made me look is you said China and Mark is more about Thailand and i though why is this guy trying to be mark and that is why I messaged you. I just want to say this be you only you because you got what it takes don't give it to another claim your authentic self. I am subscribing because you are taking me to China and that is cool i always wanted to go to China and now I can with you.
Susan, no offense taken. When I get constructive criticism I try my best to listen. I actually appreciate you took the time to write a heartfelt comment and let me know your thoughts about things. Mark is actually a friend of mine, we've got a bunch of videos together here on the channel and so it would make sense we have a similar vibe in that way. That said, I am glad to have you along for a trip to China. I've got an Indonesia series coming soon and of course I'll be back to China sometime soon too. Wishing you a blessed week to Susan.

David bhai ( bro)
Have u tried rajasthani food in INDIA??
Where’s your dipping sauce when you eat hotpot?!
Why do all the western food bloggers do the spicy hotpots? Theres so many other delicious soup base to choose from thats not so painful. 😅😅😅
Hey man, great video. How is it shanghai, can i pay with cash or is it only card?
If anyone declined ur cash, it's illegal and u can call police
中国喜欢扫码支付,电子支付,当然现金也没问题,拒收现金(人民币)在中国是违法的
Lotus wish coming True
Him saying yen half of the video made me cringe haha but the food looks amazing and you seem very enthused by chinese culture! Im so excited to experience this myself ;3
Yes, I think that David often talks too fast, eats too fast, and everything goes by too fast. Easy to make mistakes with pronunciation if you are not taking time to listen well, to take time to digest things.......He likes food, but still has much to learn about safe and healthy eating.....e.g., take small portions; . . . eat a small mouthful at a time (never stuff your face and then make chewing difficult and swallowing potentially dangerous/choking); . . . chew well (don't just wolf it down) . . . stop when you are almost full . . . and take the rest with you for later.....
How did you book an Airbnb in Shanghai? It’s saying Airbnb is not available in mainland China.
Hi David, I watching the Wanda South Africa yesterday. What are you explore all the food continent are I know you’re in Shanghai China, your Airbnb’s cheap and the food is cheap how much is a ticket though from America I live close to Philly airport.
Omg the Yuu? gardens with the temple and lotus pads SOO BEAUTIFUL, what an informative tour David!! (forgive my spelling mistake haha)but WOW! David!! those carps are indeed very SPOILED AND very FATTTTT as well :))) AND SOO AWESOME HOW YOUR 1ST? WISH CAME TRUE!!! OVER A MILLION SUBSCRIBERS :)) NOW WISH FOR A BILLION AS THE GUIDE SAID :))) anything is possible my friend :)) even 10 million is within your reach i have no doubt due to your personality and content quality!! :)) Insallah ok, am praying for it! You/your vids are just as GREAT AND AMAZING!! AS MARK WIENS':) SO WHY WOULDN'T IT REACH 10 M SUBS ? :)) anyhow, sukriya as ALWAYS! David, and safe travels ok ! oh yeah. the only thing i respectfully have to disagree with the temple garden guide on :) is that I AM NEVER EVER DISAPPOINTED WHEN ITS RED BEAN PASTE/FILLING INSIDE THE RICE BALLS!! 24/7 give me the red bean paste PLEASE!! aha! 🤩🤩🤩
