Wow. Just wow. I have seen a lot of videos of tourists visiting Holland, The Netherlands, Amsterdam, Volendam. And most of them show the same things. Over and over again. But this one is next level. Maybe it is because of the very bad weather the day you visited Volendam? I dunno. But you have seen, showed us, more than most (Dutch) people have ever seen of what is really going on in these places where they sell cheese, stroopwafels and fish to tourists. I am more than impressed.

Try to avoid the tourist traps, waste of time and money. Just copy this trip, you won't get any better.
Also try to get the same weather, so it's less touristy and shop owners have more time to educate you and let you sample.
I have bought imported waffles. Although I have not tried the fresh ones, they are still delicious. I believe that the freshly made waffles will taste better!
Your Dutch costume looks like a doll, they can make one of yours and put it in the window of a clothing store!
The smoked fish must be very fragrant, and it would be great to eat it with white wine!

There are so many kinds of cheese in that cheese shop. The residents living nearby are lucky enough to be able to eat different kinds of cheese at any time!

Oh you simple heart. The packaged stroopwafels are an insult compared with the freshly backed ones.
Smoked mackerel is the best. Juice, fatty goodness. Smoked eel on a bun is heaven.
As for the cheese, try a cheese shop when it is quiet and ask to sample all cheeses from youngest to oldest. In the youngest cheese you can still taste the milk, the oldest (brokkelkaas) you need to savour by sucking on it, perhaps with snifter of old jenever.

Man I lived here for 30 years in Edam/ Volendam, one thing I really miss from Volendam definitely is the bread with smoked eel and Kibbeling!

I love Volendam. We had wafels at that exact place. We ate lunch next door. I refused to eat the eel . Lol.
Had some dear friends from the Netherlands and its nice to see here again :) Yummy food always. Stroopwafels !! 4:14.3 lol .Just plain with caramel yum delicious!!! IKR exactly your expression lol. And oh my gosh a Dutch Boy!! lol LOVE ITT haha â„ Now that salad and toasted bread looks good. I like that for light lunch/snack. Rookwurst looks good to needs that mustard! and hot sauce/ even mayo yes. Now I could go for some really great smoked salmon even now and will be willing to try eel no problem :)

Such a shame that the real smoked eel is like Kobe beef nowadays. Most people simply can't afford it anymore. It's more a once-a-year (Christmas) thing, at least for us. And I just love it. It's so rich and subtle and salty. Yum.
The fatter the fish, the better it is for smoking. Thats why eel is really the king of smoked fish. Too bad its so rare and expensive nowadays. As all great foods in my opinion, it started as the opposite, a real working class product back in the day.

haha i actually live in volendam and het zalm slaatje is my favorite but i always get the big plate if you ever come back to volendam i highly recommend a flip with leverworst ^^

There are Dutch people who are quite distgusted when people eat fish like they are some kind of seal. I always eat my fish on a platter, cut in pieces and using utensils, unless it's kibbeling maybe.
Dutch food is one of the yummiest in Europe. They have the tastiest fish dishes in the world.

Those are the fries from downstairs. When the oil is hot enough they fry them for the second time and then they are ready to serve.

And probably most of the times it's also tastier, better quality of basmati, otherĂsh kinds of ingredients, and so on, but most people still like it that they have sort of an option to eat (South?) Indian and Indonesian and Chinese (Mostly Cantonese style i believe) and Surinamese and so on in the Netherlands. :)

as a Dutch historian, i know the photo dress-up is total BS! most foldamers were fishermen they did not wear wood glogs they wore wood souled leather slippers they didn't make stroopwafels in their spare time and they did not wear the so-called traditional Volendam dress all of that was invented after the dam the village was running out of its daily thing namely sea fishing well from the 1920s on Volendam became a tourist trap and it still is.
the eel industry of Volendam came when the dam was built cutting out the sea and making the surrounding waters a lake the uniqueness of Volendam smoked eel is that they are salted with a mix of spices one dominant being Salmiac salt of which licorice is made in the rest of the world.

Historically, such cheese was sold in the city of Gouda and so it became a product name for everyone. Nowadays the cheese is made in factories according to the original recipe but They do not bear the Gouda product name, but they do taste like real Gouda cheese.
