How can you predict a durabiity of 250miles after using it for ONE long run up a snowy mountain?!
Logic nor anything short of positive praise is not welcome on this channel
I agree. 25 mi to review a trail shoe doesn’t really cut it.
Personally I can’t get 250 out of any Hoka shoe. The Rincon and Mach were particularly bad. That said anyones prediction is just a guess based on one’s own experience- results no doubt will vary.
I think you can get a feel for the shoe after 25 miles. Seth reviews lots of shoes he can’t run all of them into the ground.
@@spencer1372 Didn't say he can't get a feel. I did say predicting the durability after a few miles because optical degredation of the midsole is BS.
Have got over 650km in my Torrent 2s; racing two trail marathons, both in terrible muddy conditions and many multiples of up to 30km training runs. Probably my favourite trail training and racing shoe of the past few years and in my opinion can be used as road to trail. 👌
Agree, very happy with The T2's, have had multiple. Hoping the T3 is not a step down.
Agreed on everything you’re saying, they are an incredible trail shoe that for some reason haven’t gotten much Play or talk in the trail world.
Same here!
Love the 2's and have a 2nd pair that got on sales. This new version seems to keep the same essence of previous version with minor changes in the upper. Looking forward to more colorways.
Agreed, the changes appear to be minimal between the versions. If I recall, from version 1 they tweaked the upper and changed the laces to create version 2 which resulted in a much better lockdown particularly over time. From version 2 to 3 it appears they're amending the upper again (I think!) It's very hard to discern from pictures. The outsole compound, pattern, laces all look the same with the only difference coming from the upper material. The lockdown on the 2s was great so not too sure if that's a welcome enough change for me to not just purchase another Torrent 2 on discount instead. When they released their new models the Zinal and Tecton X last year, I thought we wouldn't see another Torrent as these shoes appear to sit just either side so glad they're keeping the line alive; but this update from Hoka does feel a little lazy this time around. Hope I stand to be corrected.
Warm peanut butter toast after a run is a 10/10!
The torrent twos saved me. Everything else I ran in I had super bad plantar fasciitis. They brought the love of trail running back to me. Not sure if the threes will hold up to the twos, That is definitely my concern. I knew they would mess with it, when they should’ve just released more colorways and left it alone. I’ve started transitioning into speed go fives for a longer distance and probably is a good idea since the threes might not hold up to what the Torrent twos for me. Hydrate torrent twos and nine out of 10. I’ve run 30 miles in, and very rugged terrain. It has been the best outsole that I have ever experienced in a trail shoe, good in all conditions even snow. I’m sure everyone will have their opinion but for me this has been an incredible shoe for the last two years.
I think they did that - they released a few new colorways instead of coming out with the 3 for the longest time.
Torrent XTERRA version held up very well for me and has great grip. I won a couple 50ks in them. Pretty light. I think I'd use Tecton x if I was going to race another one, but torrent series was a solid shoe for me that didn't break the bank. I found I rolled ankles a lot in speedgoat and speedgoat evo
My 10/10 shoe was the Altra superior 3. The way it held my foot, was lightweight, and had pretty good grip made me chase down faster and faster times on my local mountain trails! Miss those things terribly 😢
Qd, I haven't found a 10/10 shoe. There are plenty of shoes that work great for me. But none are perfect. I'm not sure they can be. Shoes are a give and take thing. To give more cushion is to take some ground feel. To give more grip often means to take lightness.
Happy new year Seth and to your family, wish you a healthy and great year, all the best from Austria 🇦🇹
Happy New Year DGR Fam!
I’ve just used my Torrent 1 this morning. It seems I only use it once a year at the NY day park run! I should use it more for sure
Freedom is 100% a 10/10. Nothing else matters if you can't love who you want, work hard to get ahead, protect yourself and loved ones, educate yourself, and freely explore this amazing world!
I used my Torrent 2 for NYD trail parkrun this morning. I agree it is definitely a short 5 - 15k trail shoe and this update only looks like a change of upper and colours much like the rincon 1 to rincon 2. Drops a few grams but that's about it. It's a shame they couldn't put profly + in it then it would be worth getting but for essentially the same shoe at half the price, go for the Torrent 2 if interested.
The Torrent2 was/is a great shoe, taken it up to trail half-marathon, with no issues, but it's a TRAIL shoe, not much of a commuter because of the low stack. It does, however, make me pay attention to form (encourages me to land mid-to-forefoot because of the thinner midsole). But my "limit" of half-M was mostly because of the fit in the toebox (just a wee tight). It's also good on trails that might turn your ankle on a tall thicc-boi stack.
Happy New Year Seth ! You are running and working so much (counting the miles on strava) hope you get enough recovery SLEEP! You are looking a bit tired🧐 Onward and upward
I am running a half marathon at about 1:20 at 15 years old. I was wondering what things I can do to hopefully get to 1:15. I was also wondering how many miles I should be doing per week as I’m currently averaging between 60-70, and am trying to get comfortable enough to run 26 miles and beyond at reasonable speed. I’m currently running in mazuno shoes and would be interested in swapping to more trail running type shoes, do you recommend?
Seth. I love your trail reviews. Could you do one on the topo athletic pursuit. A brand I’ve been eyeing with a wide based foot. Thanks in advance.
It was reviews from you and Run4Adventure that made me buy the Torrent 2. You both loved it. I loved it also and I recently bought my 5th pair.
I'm just a little confused now by what you're saying about the Torrent line-up as a whole.
I wonder, perhaps, is your change of opinion a sign of an overall improvement in the trail shoe market, leaving the Torrent line-up behind?...
I like the Torrent's lugs for when it's a little muddy out, and I grab it for easy training runs because it fits me better than the Speedgoat 5 (whose foot "opening" is too big for me, so my feet slide around a bit).
Love Torrent
Just picked up a pair of 2's for 80 bucks. Planning to use for some mostly flat hard pack/fire road.
I've found Torrent 2 as a great versatile shoe, which can serve as a trail running daily trainer - works well for distances around 20-25 km on many different surfaces. I bought them first time because they were lighter than Speedgoats. I have been running now in my 5th pair of them, durability between 500 and 800 km (strange that the outsole of orange ones wears out faster than the blue ones, haven't tried other colors :)). Maybe in rocky Colorado for a high volume runner there are better options, but here in Europe I found them perfect for training. For trail marathons and ultras I prefer Salomon Ultra Glide as more comfortable, but a bit worse lockdown and grip, so my 10/10 shoe would probably be mix of Torrents 2's lockdown and outsole with Salomon Ultraglide's midsole and ride.
I can't speak for the V3 but I have bought 5 pairs of Torrent 2s as well. I have raced many 30ks in them. They are light and grippy and have been a staple for me in Europe too, go for cheap if you can still find your size, just wish they were slightly more durable.
I have always wanted to try Hoka... one of these days!
Speedgoat 5 all the way!!
I've been wearing the Torrents since version 1 and have always liked them for training or racing. I've worn them for 50K races and they were great.
I’ve run 2 50ks in the Torrent. Great ride - good cushion and traction. Struggled with midfoot lockdown but it can go the distance.
I’m impressed David! Happy New Year!
You’re getting push back on this one 😂.
I personally don’t love how boaty shoes like the speedgoat and challenger feel. Running in the Xodus Ultra right now and IMO that has a similar feel as the Torrent 2 in terms of ride and cushion. I expected the XU to have more cushion, but it feels fairly middle of the road.
Perhaps it’s the experience of my 40 years of running but at 56 I’m loving my lightweight torrent 2 for 30 plus runs and shorter runs
I’ve run marathons in the torrent so It can def go long. I wouldn’t go much longer than that but if you don’t like big stack shoes they can be worn long comfortably. I wish they did more of an overhaul on the shoe. I really love the torrent. Good comparison would be the perigrin
I hope the Torrent 3’s come in Men’s wide.
Certainly great for 5-10k OCR trail runs
Question of the Day:
A ten out of ten in this world is the feeling of accomplishment after finishing a race and knowing that you put everything you had into that race.
After 20km of gravel some rear lugs are broken? Is it normal?
Is the midsole and outsole the same as the 2?
Perfect for Park runs on grass and trails in UK
Torrent 1 this morning delivered the goods!
I have done 360 miles in my Torrent 2 including some ultras and so far very little wear and feel so zippy even after 30 plus miles, a great shoe.
This is really surprising to go from rave review of the Torrent 2 to this review. Is that because there wasn't much of an update to the 3 maybe? I could never transition to the fujilite 2 cause I was so in love with the fit and pep and ground feel of these. I am on my 5th pairs of Torrent 2s now, fantastic grip where many others have fallen short. Reliable, comfy, incredibly lightweight (under 200gr in my size 36 2/3) for trail running and racing up to about 30km. I use other shoes for longer distances. Sadly do agree on durability - 400km max until they feel flat. But reasonable at 65 EUR (price of my last two pairs!)
QOD: maybe the brooks Hyperion tempo would be a 10/10. I only use them to race but I love the way they feel!
As an outfitter in a major running store chain, I observe that the Torrent doesn’t move off the shelves as other Hoka trail models such as the Speedgoat or the Challenger.
There you go! Good evidence right there. THANK YOU for sharing. Happy New Year!
I swap the original Torrent insole with the Ortholite one from the Speedgoat and the ride becomes smooth as butter. No problem to go full marathon in that combination.
HNY, Seth!!
Happy New Year!!!
I’ve tried about 20 trail shoes from different brands and typea and I have to say Torrents are my #1. I do like a more ground feel but to my opinion, Torrent has the perfect balance between comfort and responsive ride.
I took them as far as a 50K 4500m ultramarathon in Andorra and they hold up well!
Grip and lockdown is spot on for technical terrain
Have you already tried the torrent 3?
@@user-xv2hw8uf3j I haven't but they seem to be pretty much the same shoe. Although I have the feeling that torrent 2 would be my preferred due to the good thermo-sealed protection band around the shoe. They cut that off the 3s to shed some weight but for my usual technical terrain it was helpful
I have had two pairs of the Torrent 2’s and strangely I’ve found them very different. The first orange pair I absolutely loved. Soft, responsive, grippy, versatile, lightweight. Bought a second pair black/red but I’m still struggling with this pair. Find them more flat, stiff, harder, unresponsive. Not the same fun, responsive ride that I experienced in the first pair. Been thinking about if they need an unusual long break-in period but +100km in that would be strange.
This happened to several years ago with the Skechers Go Run RIDE 5.... the earlier models were softer and grippier and the later models in the newer colourways became harder and stiffer. Maybe they alter things a bit in later models..... I don't buy Skechers anymore because not only have they lost there original soul, but they support abortion now, as do Nike and New Balance, and I don't won't a portion of my money to go towards ending human life.... so I've swapped over to Hoka now..... really like the torrent 2s and the Mach 5.... I hope the torrent 3s will not have a big change when it comes to the midsole.....
QD: that’s a moving target, my friend! And perhaps it’s not about actually finding a “10” but rather trial and error. Find a great shoe -for today- and keep searching/running! Just my 2 cents 👍😃
Unless Hoka dropped the stack height on the Torrent 3 8mm, you’ve listed the stack as much lower than it actually is. Torrent 2 is 26/31.
Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Extended Edition is 10/10
💯
A fried bologna sandwich from turkey and the wolf is pretty close to a 10. Thats about it. Shoes? Takumi sen 8 maybe a low 9.
:QOD: I’m a big reader and I would have to say The Lord of the Rings trilogy
Have multiple pairs of Torrent 2's and love them for a faster, more responsive ride. Still enough cushion for me although I'm a lot heavier than Seth, so that's curious that he doesn't feel they have enough cushion. They were even great for a mountain 50km for me.
However, the 3's look exactly the same as the 2's so I don't think I need these.
Seth must have pretty weak feet.... that's what happens when u wear too higher stack height shoes and too softer shoes for too long.... our feet are not designed for that and then they weaken... unfortunately, running shoe companies are increasing the stack too much and putting in plates etc..... great that Hoka still have an option like this available for 'real men' lol 😆
The only shoe I would buy that yielded 250 miles or less would be a racing flat. Can’t stomach paying over $100 for any shoe that doesn’t give me at least 400 miles
I obviously have no clue when shoes are embargoed or not… but why is this shoe a DGR exclusive on all of CZcams? Just odd.
QD - 10 out of 10, My wife
I thought you said the torrent 2 was potentially shoe of the year 🧐🧐
Torrent 1, great. Torrent 2, terrible because the uppers just stretch and you cant get a good fit.
Both my last 2 pairs of Hoka trail shoes uppers went quickly, wouldn't buy them again
Mehh.. just get the asics fuji lite 2
Looks no different than the two
I wish I could just block the 2 or 3 nattering nabobs of negativity who somehow manage to spoil what is meant to be a few minutes of pleasant goofing off here.
