I've see a few really good CZcams videos, and a lot of bad ones. This is the best one I've ever seen. No annoyingly loud canned intro music, clean editing, great preparation and organization, excellent lighting and camera work, and thorough instruction. Thanks much. I'm hopeful that you just save me a couple thousand dollars.
Thank you I really appreciate that I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful. Thank you for watching.
Martin, I want to thank you for the excellent video and instruction regarding what I initially thought was a very intimidating job for a non-professional. My son and I used your video (and one other about removing/installing cylinder heads) extensively to rebuild his Jeep Liberty 3.7 which had a dropped valve seat. Neither of us are mechanics but after watching your videos, we both said "we can do this!". And we did! After everything was put back together, we both held our breath as we turned the key to start it - and it fired right up.
For anyone considering doing this job, just watch this video (over and over), follow the steps exactly, and you will be successful. In fact, setting the timing was the easiest and most enjoyable part of the job.
You are a scholar and a gentleman.. So incredibly helpful. Thanks a million.
Thank you I appreciate that. I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful, thank you for watching.
Not all people who make instructional videos are good but you sir did a great job and were very helpful
Thank you, I really appreciate that. I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
I am a fan of many automotive channel's But you Sir are a gift from above for the 4.7 world. Simple yet extremely detailed video.
Thank you Mr. Martin, my neighbors think I'm a professional due to your step by step instructions and tips. Please know you are appreciated by so many of us who wouldn't be able to Master the 4.7 V-8 Magnum without you!
Just finished doing my timing chains, guides and hydralic tensioners, got the timing cover on my rebuild. Thanks so much for your video I watched it during my install several times to get everything done correctly, so far so good on the 4.7 rebuild again thanks for the videos.
Thank you for making this video. I wish there were more videos like this for other makes out on CZcams. Really professional filming/lighting, you have lots of great tips, you’re not cheesy or arrogant. Almost done replacing the timing set on a junkyard 4.7 that I’m going to install in my Dakota shop/beater truck and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this.
Wow, thank you!
a rocker arm fell off on cylinder 2 , put it back on but still loose. I used the washer trick under the lifter and stayed there. Forgot to adjust the timing belt which makes the engine run rough. I watched this video and turn the balance shaft to match TDC and run like a champ. Thanks a lot for this video. You saved me 1500 on repairs
Thank you Martin!! I'm currently in the middle of doing my timing chain on my 04 3.7 Dakota. You have the best video out. I feel confident doing the job after watching your video. Detailed and not too fast. I'm watching this video and have my Haynes repair manual open. Thank you! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I'm so glad you've taken the time to do the videos on the 4.7L's. I was dreading doing this job but you're so clear and concise with your instructions and tricks for helping folks tackle it. I'm more excited about this now.
I'll likely do the 08 cams and intake on my 02 now as well.
Thank you. I appreciate that I'm glad my content gives you the confidence to do this.
Thank you for watching.
Well Martin, thanks to you I just tackled this and I am buttoning everything up right now. I watched this several times and followed right along with you. Thanks for taking the time not going so fast. Just got to put valve covers on, radiator in, and a few other things. Hopefully she purrs like yours when I finally turn the key. 👍
Fantastic!
I just want to say thank you in advance. This video is so well done. My truck dropped a valve seat on the #8. Fortunately there is no piston head damage. I will using this to set up my timing chain. Again, Thank you so much!
I worked for Dodge for a number of years and that was an excellent video on how to do this. Very strait forward and explained very well.
I assume that you have done a number of these 4.7l's then? Ever have one jump time at initial crank? I just did one, reused tensioners, everything looked good. This isn't the first one I've done either. Hit the key to start it and it instantly jumped time on both heads. Even after retimiing it, I have zero compression on the passenger side and 60 psi on the drivers side. I even primed the oil system the second time, which was too late. Is priming these needed?
Thank you for making great hands on videos made my assembly and Disassembly easy thanks man you are great
Thanks for the video. Great instruction with all the visuals and tips. I watched as a refresher ( tore one down, didn't get heads back for 3 weeks 😢) I feel alot more comfortable taking on this rebuild.
Glad you found it helpful
Incredible video man. Got a 2017 trailhawk that just started a rattle yesterday that I suspect is a timing chain issue. After watching this video and the other showing how to remove the cover, I'm less apprehensive tackling this myself. Your video could save me a ton of money. You explained everything like no other I've ever seen.
Thank you, Joe. I really appreciate that. I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
I've watched several different videos on this... Martin thank you. Kept it simple, answered question before having to ask. Lol just a true professional and instructor. Thanks again
Thank you, Gabe, I really appreciate that. Glad you like it.
Hello Martin. I am really enjoying your videos. So informative and easy to understand. I have 04 Dakota 4.7L getting ready to rebuild heads and timing chains. Your videos should help me tremendously. Thank you!
Your video has been more helpful than anything that I have looked at to build my confidence to tear into my 2005 4.7 ram 1500 that has a sloppy loose passenger side timing chain that I found while changing lifters that I thought were causing all of the racket in there.
Thank you, That could be most likely caused by a hydraulic self adjuster failure or maybe worn out guides
Great video, thank you. As soon as I saw the engine bay I knew that I was about to watch how a master replaces timing gear!!
I'm an old schooled mechanic never been trained just learn as you go so after 35 I've got it, But it is very Nice to view your video it gives me a Heads up on what to expect in engine tear down on my 03 Durango been over heated so thanks find your video's quit informing...
Thanks for watching, yeah there's always something new to learn especially with today's engines.
My friend I just saw this video because I bought a 07 Liberty 3.7 with weak valves, it runs but missing and with this video I am going to do it myself. THANKS A LOT FOR SHARING IT WITH US. GOD BLESS YOU.
You're very welcome. With the 3.7, there is the additional balance shaft that needs to be timed with the idle sprocket. Other than that, the process is exactly the same as the 4.7
Martin, I forgot to tell you how much your videos helped me. You are truly a mopar master mechanic. Thanks for your speedy reply.
Wow, thanks, glad to hear it.
Keep the videos coming for 3.7L engines. Thank you.
Thanks Martin..the most I watch your videos the better I do in mecanic..You explain every Detail..
Blessings!!
Glad to hear it, thank you.
I know exactly what the "YEAH!!" feels like! Very, very nicely done! Way to go!!!
Nice video! Now I just wish you'd come on over here and do it for me. Lol my tensioner just went in my 04 Cherokee. It's middle of winter and I live in an apartment building. Just ordered all the parts and now I'm going to be watching all your videos repeatedly till they come in. Thanks for the very well explained videos. You're a life saver.
Yeah, I grew up in Iowa, hated working on vehicles in the winter.
Man that engine will run a million miles with you owning it👍Really enjoyed the video! Thanks for sharing!🙏
well will see, glad you enjoyed the video.
happy for you, that would rattle my confidence, thanks for the build
first class work Martin,an excellent job.im very pleased for you.
awesome video I have never attempted this but after watching this video i can do this. very methodical, informative on bolt sizes and what steps to follow camera coverage view well done so you are able to see the whole area where you are working. your verbal skills teaching are great. thanks
Thank you Paul.
I really appreciate that. I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.

I also thank you for this great video. You made the job clear and easy for me.
thank you a million times :) best regards from Czech Republic (Plzeň)

Great video! I like the way you're so detailed with your explanation of everything!

You good sir are a blessing the ziptie trick is genius was dreading the timing chain replacement thinking how was I gonna hold it all in place thank you 👍🇦🇺
Thank you for watching. I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
The best information on this timing chain on CZcams! THANKS
Thank you Travis, I appreciate that.
I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
marten Ive worked on cars for 55 years.. Ive noticed that all these cars have plastic backed timing tensioners,,, Like you thoughts on removing the plastic and building back with brass and machining to specs. after watching you , you know what your doing.. thats rare these days. keep up the good work,,
thanks for tips made my job a whole lot easier. ive been a mechanic for 20yrs and thanks to people like u i learn a lil more everyday👍🏿
Thank you Fred glad I could help.
Martin you’re the man. Thanks for the videos. Just finished a timing chain on 05 Ram 1500.
Thank you, glad I could help!
Hey @MrGoliat6288 I have the same truck and it just started having a knocking sound that seems loudest from underneath toward the back. But I could be mistaken. But the sound doesn’t go away once warmed up. And is pretty loud.
Just curious if you had the same symptoms with truck before doing the timing job. Through research, it seems to me that if it were the lifters starting to go bad the sound goes away after a bit. Thanks for your time.
Also Martin you’re the best. Very helpful.
Super super super video! Thanks Martin from the UK!!!
Thanks for this. Primary tensioner broke for me too in the same manner. Got one next day for $28 bucks. I'm sure this is a common event. Probably should replace it anyway due to the brittle nature of the plastic. Good video.
I too broke it. Replacing all but the gears while I'm at it
I'm liking these little 8 engines more and more.
Glad to hear that
Glad someone finally made a great video. Thanks for informative job
Thank you . I really appreciate that. I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
@@martinbuilt I've been looking for head bolt torque specs. I have seen 4 different videos and all 4 tell different specs.
Martin, you have helped more 4.7L & 3.7L owners with your very informative videos than anyone else I know!!!
We get customers every day who bring your name up because your videos have helped them with their projects or issue. I think it’s awesome that your name has become synonymous with 4.7L maintenance and performance!!! Keep up the great work!!!
Wow... Thank you, that is so awesome to hear I sure appreciate that. I enjoy sharing and I also want to make sure the 4.7/3.7 lives on.
We also appreciate you and your website you're the only one out there that has any performance parts for the 4.7.
Performance especially!
Excelente video, thanks so much, I have jeep liberty 2007 3.7, I am not expert in mechanic but likes works in cars. Your video helps a lot. From salt lake city utah usa
I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful. Thank you for watching.
This was a great detailed how to video, thank you 👍😁
Thank you Dave, I'm glad you found it helpful.
Nice video Martin. Nice clear shots on the video. I had a diagnosis of coolant in my oil in my 08 3.7. So I'm considering pulling off the head gaskets. While I have all that off I gathered I might as well go the extra step and do the timing chain as well so this was very helpful. Not to mention, I just remembered since I'm doing all that I might as well throw in a new set of lifters.;) thanks!
Thank you I appreciate that. Glad you liked it and found it helpful.
good luck with with your engine hope everything turns out well.
Respect Martin. Great job!
Hi, Just wanted to say thank you for a couple of your videos. This one on replacing the timing chains and sprockets and the one on installing solid lifters. I had to tear the heads off my WK grand cherokee to replace some bent valves so I decided to change all the valves, the valve springs, seals and put solid lifters in. I also replaced the timing chain and sprockets along with the water pump and belt tensioner and new fuel injector connectors. Little bit of work but it runs great now. Thanks again.
Glad you found my videos helpful. Did you have a timing chain failure that caused the bent valve?
No, after I installed HO cams the bolt on the drivers side cam came slightly loose, guess I should’ve put locktite on ie, and the timing went off just slightly and caused the 4 intake valves on the drivers side head to hit pistons and bend. The pistons were fine but not the valves. Alls good now. Painful lesson learned though.
@@jerrymcmanus9366 sorry to hear that, I would be surprised if the bolt actually came loose, what have seen is that you may have thought the cam gear was seated to the cam but in actuality, it is not, and then the cam gear slips and you end up with bent valves and the appears to have come to loose.
@@martinbuilt thats very possible. The pin or dowel was damaged too. I’d include de a pic but looks like CZcams doesn’t allow for that in this message area.

@@martinbuilt I was wondering if I could pick your brain I am having problems with my 4.7
@@saulzavala9806 yeah, what's up
@@martinbuilt well I changed all of my lifters and after a while started making noise again
@@saulzavala9806
Did you soak the lash adjusters in motor oil for a day or so? This will work out the air that is trapped in the lash adjusters. And how is the oil pressure? It would be a good idea to run 3/4 quart of Marvel's Mystery oil with the next oil change. I use this in both my 4.7 engines.
highly recommended video for this engine
Thank you
I watched your video until I had it memorized because it was the most detailed and it went absolutely flawless. My only issue was the LH cam sprocket/gear from Cloyes was not marked "R - V8 - L" (only had "L") and it was missing the holes for the spanner tool. I wanted matching gears but I needed the motor fixed ASAP. So using the old gear as a template I drill holes in the new one so I had a place to attach the spanner tool to torque the cam shaft gear bolts. Hell of a way to cut corners by not drilling two holes and deleting three stamp impressions. Great info, thanks for your hard work putting this video out there.
Updated 12/7/2022 -- I replaced timing chains and lifters hoping it would get rid of the famous 4.7 tick and it did for about 4 days but then came back - strange why 4 days then returned ?
Updated 12/12/2022 -- Had an oil leak on passenger side valve cover . Didn't have new gasket fully seated at rear corner-- it rolled over and some how got cut. Took about a week for the oil to find the exhaust manifold. Replaced with new one and no leaks.

Im a bit concern about your oil pan containing debries tho.
My 04 jeep came from a "dealer" and it's been a guessing game locating parts that where taking off and never went back in the car. Thanks to you i managed to put some of them back. Cheers man!
Great video!! So the 08 camshafts have more lift and duration. I have 147,000 on my 4.7 and she runs like a champ. I take good care of her. Changing fluids when called for. 04 Dakota i have. Thanks again!
Thank you, Victor I am looking for Dakota regular cab 2wd for my next project.
I put a 4.7 from a 03 Durango into a 01 dakota and because of the timing difference between the two it wouldn't run so I sent it out to multiple mechanics to try to get it running and they all failed so the project got pushed aside now after doing research and ordering new parts its time to put new timing gears and chains and stuff on but ive never done the job before so thanks for making this awesome how to boosts my confidence alot.
Thank you, you will also need to replace the 32 teeth to a 16 TEETH CRANKSHAFT RELUCTOR WHEEL
@@martinbuilt that should be a part that doesn't get worn out right? Can I just swap from the old motor to the new? Or should I look for a new one
@@matty2helpfull yes you can use the old one. you will need to pull the engine and disassemble the lower half of the engine to lift the crank out far enough to change it out. you may be better off finding an engine that had the NGC ECM and sell that engine.
@@martinbuilt I need to pull the engine again anyway to pull change the wire harness again so I will probably just continue with this one but I'll keep that in mind thank you for all your useful info 😊
