Wow. I was just thinking about Tony the other day. We first met while attending Lake Waco Elementary School. He was the kind of kid that would act out along with the other "limit pushers", but when the teacher showed up, he would "flip the script" on them! lol He would tell the kids they need to behave and respect our teacher! Teachers loved him. lol They would all say "Listen to Tony"! If they only knew! lol He liked to be the center of attention and make people laugh. He was a kind-hearted kid. He never made fun or picked on anybody in a cruel manner, and that's rare where we come from. The kid could jump far too...like a rubber band! lol He still holds the title as the 1984 Undefeated "Jump the River" Champion of the 3rd grade. Last time we spoke was in 1989...damn that sounds so unreal! We were in our 8th grade orchestra class (he was learning to play the bass) at Wiley Middle School. We were only 2 months into the new school year but it was his last day; he was moving to Dallas (or maybe it was Houston) to be closer to a new manager they just hired. Luckily, that day our orchestra teacher gave us a "free day". He came over and sat in my lap! After joking around about how far we go back in school together and him just realizing I'm white! lol (he would have killed it doing stand-up! His timing was spot on!) he told me he came over to tell me goodbye and then he talked about his career plans. He was so excited & optimistic about his future. It's hard to believe how that skinny, scrawny, funny, hyper kid I first came to know in grade school could belt out the most beautiful melodies. He would sing in every class we had together at this point...if he wasn't talking, he was singing! When he sang, you could see a calmness wash over him. It was such an awesome blessing to witness. I wish I had the chance to tell him thank you. Thank you for noticing that shy, quiet, chubby little white girl that kept to herself most times. Thank you for helping her feel that she exists, helping her understand that people can see her, and it's ok. Thank you for making the anxiety strickened daily struggle of going to school not so bad. Thank you for being one of the fondest memories of my childhood. Thank you, much love. R.I.P. Tony.

I recently saw a story on Russ O'Neal on the Discovery ID show "Death By Fame", and it also talked about the unfortunate events that happened with the members of the group. I also remember the song "Kissing Game", played on stations everywhere and almost everybody was singing it.

One of my favorite r&b groups since junior high. I was blessed to see them sing in my graduation nite at Disneyland back in 1993. I was so happy that night i will never ever forget that special nite. Tony was the best singer. His voice 🥰 wish it didn’t have to end this way. Someone should have gotten help. He was so talented and so much more money you could’ve made in this generation.
Many tried to help Tony with his drug addiction back in 1995, but he denied the help, then his fiance for 4 years up until the the of his death tried to help him with his drug addiction, she tried everything, they loved each other and was so happy together, but the drugs got in the way of them not getting married, Tony could have been here if got the help earlier on. Rest well all his pain is gone. Sorry for the long post

Tony Thompson was definitely a great talent, that group endured so much tragedy. One of my favorite groups ever. Tony's solo album(Sexational) was very underated, but to me was a hit!!!! I wore that album out back in 1995!!! He did a superb job and was produced by DeVante Swing from Jodeci and also produced by Al B. Sure!!! R.I.P. Tony!!! 🙏💯🌹

Tony was a talented singer indeed Lamont, & I'm almost positive he would've been on the level of a Tevin Campbell today IF it would have been in the HI-FIVE master plan or the cards! For what it's worth, that very damaged group still had a few "bops" that have stood the test of time & still bring folks young & old to the dance floor! RIH young one, wish things could've ended differently if ever @ all!

Beautiful Memories: Thank you Lamont for this video. I want to add that back when Russell left the band, there were many auditions for his replacement, and, my uncle was a part of the audition process. The manager at the time came across a tape/video of my uncle and his 2 very good friends rapping and singing at the time (during this moment, Hi-5 was searching for a new sound) and when he saw my uncle rapping and singing, he (manager) made it his mission to TRY and sign my uncle. The manager called my grandmother and she stated that she was not letting her son join the group (maybe intuition… IDK) so the manager came from New York (I’ll never forget this) and wanted to speak to my uncle (he was sleep 😡) so that he could sign him on the spot. My grandmother was adamant that she was not interested in her son joining this group (education was priority) so to make a long story short, he missed the call to be in Hi-5. I was so hurt for him…this was the closest thing to stardom that our family came close to. I will forever remember this group, the manager and the missed opportunity. Before my grandmother passed in 2018, I asked her did she regret not letting her baby boy join the group? She said “Nope. Look where my child is versus where they are.” Hard reality but there is truth in words… 🙏🏾

One more sad note to add to this story, original member Roderick "Pooh" Clark who was in the accident, passed away in April of 2022. Hi-Five's story is definitely full of tragedy, fortunately their amazing mark on music will forever live on.

I didn’t know he passed away. This really saddens me. I loved all of their songs. The husband and I still play and dance to their songs and our young children know all of Hi Five’s hits and have introduced Hi Five’s music to their friends. That era was my “coming into my teenage years”, as a girl. My husband tells the stories of his friends calling girls on three way while he would sing some of Hi Five songs and he and a couple of his friends would go up to a girl he liked and sing one of their song, of course he would be the lead. I’m just in tears right now, such awesome great talent!!! We played Hi Five strong in Mississippi. My most favorite “Should’ve never let you go”❤. All their songs I loved and I still jam, because of the fun memories and joy they still bring to me.

Very underrated!? If he kept singing good hits he would have been as popular as the 2 aforementioned! Rip to him & those 2 ladies! Sad he (Russell)killed the backbone of his family! An autopsy later determined that he had died from "toxic effects of chlorodifluoromethane," or inhaling a toxic amount of freon.
