    One of the great things about the old Macks are that you don't need a 5000 dollar scan tool to diagnose an issue. Nope, a simple test light, and a 35 dollar Craftsman multimeter and you can solve most electrical issues.

Dad didn't like the fact that I refused to go to flight attendant school, I looked him straight in his face and told him I was going to drive a dump truck for him. Wrong on the transmission! That was a 6 speed. The compound shifter on the right is Rev, Low and Direct. Low is only supposed to be used in 1 st. You can leave it in low and shift through 3 rd and shift to direct. There are overlaps in the ratios so it’s not the same as a duplex 10 speed is.

    I bought a used 1976 MACK R 300 model 5 speed with 3.2 million miles on her. I put 700 thousand more on her. Dropped in a MACK 350/6, w/new Mack clutch. The difference was night and day. WARNING! that trani only gives you your sixth speed it takes 175000 miles to break that transmission in thats how long it took for it to be worn in enough to downshift from first to first & low while the truck is moving . on my 85 mack trlx107 trani you had a choice of three different gear ratios for first & low from the factory i had the lowest it was really nice for keeping my speed slow enough when doing snow loading with a snow go snow thrower , i went 950,000 with that trans with out a repair for my first clutch i had mack ( with their kit replace all the bearings in it ) they said that it was the cleanest trans they ever seen always clean the side magnet twice a year and as it got older there was less and less metal on the magnet . then after the new bearings there was an increase on the magnets but drops off to virtually nothing in a couple of years i put 1.750,000 miles on her then sold it . ( a friend was going to order one about 6 years ago the dealer said they are no good anymore cause they are made in mexico with lower grade alloy metals )

    Thats an RD600 not an R. It's also a Maxidyne not a Thermodyne looks like a 300 with chassis mounted charge air cooling. The transmission is a TRXL107 Maxitourque 6 speed. not a duplex. You only use low while in first gear, you don't split the gears. Rear axles might be 55000 lbs rated so it might be a bit heavy for some states.

    The newer, the worst. I started on a 237 steel hood DM and a 185 horse Thermodyne and a Quad box and ended up with a Superliner with an E-9 and a 12-speed. The 'C-'models have a bit more leg room and a good a.c. but for off in holes and roughs I'd take an R-model or a DM any day, OR a B-model, 711 with a duplex. Drove straight trucks and pulled trailers and hauled concrete. Single axles, tandems, Tri's, quads and quints. And everything else too. Cummins and Cats but the Mack old school were the strongest. Even Oshkosh/Mack fron discharge. Sounds crazy but it spanned over 50 years. Army 5-tons at 19. LOve it but it don't love me. Time to quit and drive a mower. God Bless Yall!

    Is this what I should be looking for as a first truck? I've been driving a tractor trailer for a little over 5 months now, and I'm considering switching to driving a dump truck with the goal of becoming an owner operator. I know that I'll need to learn the business and gain experience driving the truck first, but I like to get my ducks in a row so that I know what I'm working towards. I know that I don't want a new truck, and I know that I want a pre-Volvo Mack truck because I want reliability, durability, and performance; something that is going to give me my money's worth and be dependable, simple, and easier to maintain. "Measure twice, cut once." I don't have restrictions on my CDL. I can drive a manual, but I've never seen the shifter style that is in the truck in the video. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. I forgot to mention that I'm 6'3" with long legs. Will I have enough room? I'm chunky, too haha

    Sorry but, NO! You Do Not split that two stick Mack's gears! It's a "ten speed extended range transmission". The second stick I believe is Rev=reverse "Up and to the left" Low=low range AKA "deep reduction" off road gears are "up and to the right" and Dir=direct which is your on-road gears 1-5 yes that's right it's a five speed in all reality! The 8 speed extended range is the same but with an air shift and a neutral in the ranges( plus you're not supposed to use 4-5 gears in low even if they are there. The 7 speed extended range transmission has a range button and it has a reverse in low and high=direct so you don't have to shift a stick, or move a switch. So..... Nice you're showing the old Macks they're still great trucks but can't keep up with the new ones. They're still valuable and ready to work though!

    in my experience, old macks will run forever, but they have to run forever to do the same amount of work a competetitors truck can do in 10 years.when i ran a mack dump body by the end of the day i was a whole run behind, compared to trucks that could haul as much as me, but actually had horsepower under the hood.i lost 5 loads a week because of that powerless piece of sh•t.thats a loss of 20 loads a month. 260 loads a year gone because mack had no clue how to make anything but bottom end torque.but they WILL run forever.be good engines for low rpm, high load portable generators.

    Maxidyne ,the old thermodyne engines didn't have turbos

    • @joelweston17
      @joelweston17 Před 2 lety

      Very late in the game some did. What they learned and introduced in the maxidyne is they learned air to air intercooler & cooling from underneath with oil; to offset thr extra heat by turbo. The thermodyne didn't have that so if you lugged it & really leaned on the turbo, bye bye head...

    • @joelweston17
      @joelweston17 Před 2 lety +1
