The best part is that they recorded the commercial and then dubbed over it later with Steinbrenner saying "Your hired" instead of "Your Fired" and the joke works both ways.
Check out the mini series The Bronx Is Burning. It's excellent. John Tuturro as Billy Martin and Oliver Platt as George Steinbrenner. It looks at the '77 season, the rivalries, everything, including other things that were going on in NYC that summer, including the Son of Sam murders. It's really well done.
What gets me is that Billy, who was so skinny because he persisted on an apparently all-alcohol diet, should have said, "Tastes great," while the overweight George should have said, "Less filling."
Actually, it’s what I would expect. Billy liking Lite Beer b/c it helped him stay trimmer, while George liked whatever tasted great. Lite Beer, hot fudge sundaes, cheese cake, etc.
It looks like Mr. Martin went to the trouble of personally sampling several cans of the product before going on camera to endorse it. That's true thoroughness and professionalism for you.
Billy had success, up to a point, when he would self destruct or, as he did in oakland, burned out the arms of his young pitchers. Billy took Yanks to WS in 76, won it in 77, and that was it. Yanks went to WS in 81 but lost, and never returned until 96 when Joe Torre was managing. George was more of a buffoon back in the 80s and Billy was his sidekick. They were co-dependents
How about the Twins, the Tigers, the Rangers...and the fact that the '78 Yanks were basically his team from '77. He had lots of success, better than a lot of managers. No doubt flawed and impeded by his alcoholism, but a lot of success for such an imperfect man.
78 Yanks were not doing well when he left mid season. IIRC--9-10 games behind Boston. He did great in Texas, Detroit and Minn but his conduct would get him canned
Billy Martin was one of, if not the best, pure manager ever. He took teams that had no business being over .500 to the playoffs and knew more baseball than maybe anyone. Sadly, he never got help for his alcoholism because he was great for the sport, great for the Yanks and having spoken to people who knew him, he was a good man with a big heart but had a demon that he couldn’t control.
@@fscap811 Most of the players in 1978 said that Bob Lemon calmed them down after Billy's high tensions and that's why they went all the way. Never made the series with any other team either.
Rest in paradise George steinbrenner and Billy Martin

Back in the day when commercials were good.
I actually started drinking Lite after watching this :).
R.I.P.: Billy Martin and George Steinbrenner
Coming from a Red Sox Fan
They should have made a Comedy Show with These Two Characters.
It was the classic love-hate relationship.

There weren't many mistakes, but the staging of this commercial was one: It wasn't filmed until the following year, after Billy "resigned."
Yes, great series
Watching it now 🤣😂
Watching now, 6 years after your comment. Great mini series!
Thank you for the recommendation-great series!! One of the reasons I love YT comments 😀
Dam, how I miss those days compared to the crap we see today on free TV.
There was one time they redubbed the dialogue so that instead of "You're fired", George said, "You're Hired!"
And Billy STILL said, "Oh no.....not again".....

Depending what happened to Billy, they either dubbed in George saying "Your Fired" or "Your hired".
YOUR FIREDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Not true. In fact, Billy showed up to the shoot late, probably due to talking to reporters, and George was furious.
Well, it's Lite beer so several would have to have a very broad meaning.
Classic. I always liked Billy.
It wasn't long after I first saw this ad that he got fired.....again.
Classic
I miss Billy Martin. He was quite a character.
He was annoying and constantly starting conflicts wherever he went.
Billy fascinated George for some reason..............................................
I did too, and I'm a Red Sox fan. You can't argue with the success he had, he was a bigger than life character just like George
One WS win only. Not that successful.
@@howie9751 Billy was known for achieving quick turnarounds. The problem was that his managing style could not sustain long term success.
@@SamWesting Yes. After a year or two the players would catch up to his act and took him in stride. It was especially noticeable in the young players.
Martin in a beer commercial is kind of sad :(

Everything you want in a beer and less? Less flavor too.
If that were true it wouldn't have become so popular and lead to sooooo many imitators.

Supposedly George was going to bring Billy back again but Billy died in his car accident just before spring training started

Yeahh just finishing reading A book about Billy Martin . The Last Great Yankee. Sad as fuk !
What was so great about him?
@@howie9751 Are u kidding me. I'm not gonna give u a synopsis here , how bout you read the book.
He was a great baseball man but a practicing alcoholic with a violent streak.
Joined at the hip. For better or worse.
George and Donnie Trump were homies💰R.I.P Mr.Steinbrenner
