Had mine since 2014 and still using it regularly. I had the stator and reg/rec issue in 2016 but that has been the only issue I’ve had. Don’t let this put you off, I replaced them all for less than £200 that included oil and filter. The only other costs have been servicing and consumables. I have considered changing it many times but can’t find anything to replace it that isn’t going to cost me a small fortune. I ride enthusiastically and always get over 200 miles to the tank, usually only managing to get between 17 and 18 litres in to the tank per fill up. It is shod with Michelin road Vs which are superb. I bought mine because the MCN review back in 2016 gave it 5 stars. Love the bike and will probably ride it until it becomes uneconomical to repair. Mine has never overheated and I have sat in traffic on a summer’s day. The mirrors work fine for me and the gearbox is fine so maybe some of the issues you are having are specific to your bike?

      @TheRhythmicBiker  Před rokem

Glad to hear you’re loving the bike mate.
The issues I mentioned aren’t “issues” per say, the gear box is not broken or problematic, but to say they are forgiving or super smooth I felt would be untrue and unfair to perhaps less experienced riders who might be considering buying a sprint in the future.
Mechanically I agree they are superb, I mentioned in the video that I honestly haven’t had 1 mechanically fault since owning the bike, however the electrics are not the best and many owners on the forums and FB page have had similar sensor issues, again it not a negative as none of these repairs cost a lot to repair, and of course there are examples like yours where owners have not experienced many of these issues, perhaps it is luck, perhaps they just haven’t happened yet, who knows.
What we do know is the sprint is an awesome bike, a forgotten gem as I said in the video, and hopefully a bike triumph considering bringing back in the near future as I would love to see a modern updated version 😎
Thank you for watching and commenting mate, it’s always great to hear from fellow sprint riders 🤘

This is without a doubt one of the most overlooked bikes in history. I had a 2005 back in the day and I am trading in an old Monster for a 2006 this weekend. One off the best overall bikes ever. The engine is fantastic. Power everywhere, anytime. Brakes suck, but swap out for brembos and you're good. My wife was fine on the stock seat for long 2-up rides. It's just great at being a great bike. if you want a lot of electronic do-dads you're not gonna be happy. But if you like to just turn the key and go, she's a beauty.

I bought an ST in 2021 when I got back into bikes after a break. I bought mine (black, 2009) in great nick for a song. Electrics failed so replaced the stator, R&R and some of the wiring and the bike was golden. I then replaced the stock exhaust with the Trident setup which I would highly recommend to anyone, they sound and look epic and finish off the bike. I traded mine in and never looked back however, as you say in the video, anyone after a sports tourer on a budget should give one of these a go. They are gorgeous to ride, no dramas and go forever as long as you take care of the things covered in your video.

Wow, what a thoroughly good review of the sprint 😁 Absolutely Rythmic 👍 You really had me sold on it 😍 until the last few minutes 🤨
I previously owned a Triumph 900 Thunderbird sport and planned to keep it untill retirement, unfortunately life got in the way. It was an unusual bike part retro Bonneville part 70's retro ( three into two upswept exhausts) with a modern twist ( wishbone mono shock). Wider flatter handlebars helped it handle like a Boss.
It went round corners as if it ran on rails. That particular model was only made for a few years, the Thunderbird and Adventure were less well specked) They still fetch £5,000 upwards for a well kept model. Look it up there's a couple of vids on the tube. I very nearly bought another but it's rival back in the day was the FZ1 and so I bought one of those instead.

Mate it's fantastic to see a review of this bike in 2022 ! Fantastic 👌 I ride a GT and only thing I don't like is 265kg 😁 Otherwise, do look at the specs of modern litre bikes coming to market right now and you will find this out paces and out torks a lot of them despite being 2010 technology. It is a phenomenal tourer, just loves munching miles. I do big miles on mine and it is always a bike brings a grin to your face. A modern bike built a decade ago and in Caspian Blue it gets lots of comments from "civillians" 🤗 Yes, as you say, a MUCH underated bike. I'm keeping my classic with me until she wants a new owner 😜

Had my St1050 for 5 years now and it's been a belter - comfy, reliable and surprisingly quick!. Other than a dodgy fuel sensor it has been super reliable - rode it down to Le Mans and all my buddies with their sports bikes suffered but after 400 miles I was still comfortable.Just bought a Ducati Supersport to update the garage a bit but I can't bear to part with the ST so it's staying 45k miles and counting!..

I have a 2008 1050 st for a short older rider they are a bit of heavy bike but I've lowered mine front and rear and fitted bar raisers which has helped somewhat.
Each year my bestie and myself do a 5 to 7 days tour of somewhere the first being Snowdonia 360 the second was the Crieff clover leaf tour in Scotland and last week was Northumbria, Cumbria and the lake District.
The bike was awesome on all 3 trips who knows where we will end up next year.
My bike was a private sale the guy brought it from let's say the worst bike sellers in the UK and soon after riding it home frome near Liverpool the problems started, it just stopped when I used the indicators to slip through some traffic, that was the stator and rectifier the second was a few months later it failed to start so tank off the air filter had obviously never been changed nore the plugs all good until the bike was in my garage running a few months later then it ran rather erratic then stopped and wouldn't restart for about 3 weeks I tried lots of things but the bit that was annoying was resetting the alarm each time so £9.99 for a parch least from triumph at Peterborough I headed out to bypass the alarm when I did that I noticed the neutral light came on and it hadn't before I pressed the button and it ranso the alarm cam off the bike and touch wood that's the 3 issues I've had with my sprint. I've rebuilt the hub fitted the lowering kit replaced the fork springs as part of the lowering fitted heated grips a usb charger and nighteyes and now a sat nav bolted to the pocket for the tools and fitting a gear indicator next week. Another thing about the sprint is nowhere to mount things from hense why the infill pannels get drilled and holes cut in them. Thanks to my best mate Nicholas Jones who organises our trips away they have all been great fun brother well maybe not Hard Knott pass lol

Hi Dom, before I brought the Sprint ST I test rode a VFR 800 and whilst it was a very stable and solid bike, I couldn’t get on with the VTEC power delivery, felt like a car at times 😄
I’ve heard that Aussie riders have made slight modifications to sort the overheating issue due to the temperatures you get over there. Before you buy one, I would join the “Triumph Sprint ST 1050” ground on Facebook, there are actually quite a lot of Aussie sprint owners who I’m sure would be able to provide you with lots of information.
And finally of course I would recommend test riding as many bikes as you can to give you an idea of what you will get on with and enjoy the most 🤘

  • @alexmorgan3435
    @alexmorgan3435 Před rokem +1

I've had my 2008 Sprint ST for 7 years. It's never let me down. The mirrors on it are rock solid. I did have to replace the right one but that's because the crappy spigot bracket within the arm that allows them to fold in failed and it is not serviceable. Cost £99.00 for a new OE replacement.
Mine has never over heated. The temp remains rock solid in the middle.
The suspension is fairly rudimentary and soft. I would say the bike feels more touring than sports bike. It can be a pretty top heavy bike to get quickly around the bends and does not feel that flickable, compared to say my VFR 800 5th gen which feels much lighter and more sporting or my much newer Speed Triple RS. It would definitely benefit from an upgraded rear shock and uprated K-tech front spring conversion.
The brakes are actually ok, not pull your eyeballs out strong, but they do the job.
But as you say it is all day comfortable riding.
The gearbox is agricultural but if you put Motul 5000 series semi-synthetic in it massively quietens the gearbox and makes changing up or down the box a lot smoother. I tried Castrol Racing Edge synthetic a few years ago and it didn't wrk well for my Sprint. None of my bikes so I don't use it now preferring Motul 5000 series instead.
Yes the lights are crap and like you I try not to ride at night. Recently I fitted Kaptur LED bulbs and it is like night and day to the std OE candle bulbs. The lenses are projector lenses so they are suited to LED bulbs. I can now see where I am going but more importantly where drivers might have previously thought they might pull out on me from side junctions/roads, this does not happen not now.
There is no issue fitting a GI Pro gear indicator. It is so easy and there is no problem what so ever integrating it with the Sprint's electrics. It calibrates itself automatically and the rest is history.
I also fitted a Denali sound bomb horn which is awesomely loud compared to the rubbish std horn.
Have also puddinised mine and fitted a Shindengen FH020 Reg/Rec hard wired in.
But my biggest hate of the bike is the frikin seat being secured by the poxy pair of bolts underneath the rear edge which are frankly a nightmare to remove and then refit to secure the seat as you have to pull back the back edge of the seat. Who ever at Triumph thought that this would be a good idea is a complete moron. They should be fired.
And then once you have removed the seat to get the battery out you have to lift the fuel tank which means removing the wretched rear mounting bracket and the side fairings at the front bending them out slightly. It is not well thought out at all unlike my VFR which is so easy to work on not that I need to work on it, bar basic servicing.
Yes regular servicing ie regressing of the rear hub is essential to avoid it seizing or disintegrating.
With only a short 29" leg I find it quite a tall and imposing bike especially with a full tank of fuel and trying to manoeuvre it at low speeds. There ar a couple of times mine has gone over as I felt it get away from me. Nothing serious as I have the full set of R&G bungs fitted to protect it in case of a drop. But once it goes down I cannot lift it. have needed help in the past. Once in a car park, once doing a U turn in a narrow like and once in the entrance to field where I had to take an urgent piss. On all occasions I had to wait until some one I thought could help lift came along.
But all in all I agree it's not a classic, but this is not the reason not to keep it. It is such a comfortable bike to ride hour after hour after hour all day.

Bloody awesome comment buddy, nice to see someone really know their stuff about the bike.
I’m glad yours hasn’t let you down electronically, if you search in the sprint owners page on Facebook there are a number of post from people who have suffered from similar issues such as the rec/reg failing, and just about every sensor under the sun, I don’t think they are all this bad and like I said mine has never let me down mechanically, I just think there are improvements to be made in the wiring and set up of the electronics.
If you ever want to see if your bike overheats go to London, mine did not have a good time whilst on a protest ride down there 😅
I’ve only heard good things about upgraded suspension, definitely sounds like a modification worth doing.
I bet your horn sounds mental with that upgrade 🤘
Yeah the seat bolts are so bloody irritating, especially recently as I’ve had the bike in bits a lot trying to sort out an issue I had with the rec/reg, I agree that whoever decided on that setup should be fired and never allowed to work on bikes again 😂
Before buying the sprint I test rode a VFR and I just found the power delivery on it weird, it sort of really took away any sportiness too it, but when I rode the sprint for the first time I just loved how the power kept coming after about 3-4k.

I love mine, I've not had any problems, and as you say very comfortable.
However I have one problem, the once glorious sporty foot rest position have become a problem because I've had to have a knee replacement.
I love the bike so I am hoping if one of your knowledgeably followers would know about a foot rest lowering kit? I'm a bit over 70 and want to keep riding my Sprint until I am atleast 80.

Seriously, the things you don't like about the bike can all be sorted....Suspension, regulator etc. What you didn't mention is the one thing I despise about an otherwise great bike....Getting the seat off compared to most bikes out there is mind bogglingly dumb stupid. That is one thing I would have paid an extra 50 for....A key lock instead of bolts.

I agree these things can be sorted, the reason they annoy me is because more times than not they end up costing the owner quite a bit of money to resolve.
