  • Hello Skaters! Welcome back! Today I am going to teach you how to do a move from the United States Figure Skating Association 'Moves In The Field' tests (soon to be renamed 'Skating Skills' tests). This is the Waltz Eight pattern and is in the first test for both our standard track and adult track of testing. It is a throwback from the original figures days and requires precision and lots of upper body control. I hope you have fun with it!

    Ahhhhh thank you so much for this coach Julia!!! I’ve been hacking away at this move for months and haven’t been able to figure out why I always end up way off the circle on that final forward outside edge. Now I know it’s the c-step that’s messing it up and how to fix it! Now if I can get my left leg spiral and the other c-step in the crossover pattern into shape then maybe I can FINALLY test adult pre-bronze moves. Thanks for the video!

    I’m testing adult pre-bronze moves in November and this is the final skill I have to master. I’ll have to try the arms you show in this video and see if that helps keep me more stable on that final step forward to the outside edge. Thank you for the video!

    Julia this is very helpful yet another element to hone. I can't thank you enough for the detailing and your videographer for zoom in slo-mo takes...as an adult skater (in my 5th decade ) I am grateful for your effort and expertise! P.S. I didn't realize that I was doing or that I could do a back outside mohawks
    until you pointed it out in this video 🙃😀 but can you clarify in this video are you executing back outside open or closed mohawk @ 5:09

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  Před rokem +2

      Oh thank you so much! I appreciate that! This would be considered an open Mohawk since your legs are in an open position at the end. I will make a video sometime explaining the difference between open and closed.

    Kewl! I love footwork!
    But the kicker; my other coach does the arms so that I would face away from the circle when doing a FO3. So I’ll have to adjust accordingly 😢
    Now, for my skating diary part…
    Today I met a 47 year old flutist/skater at the rink. Actually introduced ourselves a few months ago, but had a proper chat for the first time today. Yeah, her real job is as a flutist, but she’s trying to fuse that with skating, all self taught. How awesome is that?
    Anyways, we talked about how we (40+ adults) should stay away from jumps and go with spins and footwork.
    As for me, footwork is improving every week. Spins? 😮‍💨 I’ll go with jumps. No matter how many times I crash.

    • @CoachJulia

      I hope the arm adjustment is helpful for you.

    She's saying to use your knees in the 3 turns but her skating leg looks straight here in the turns - either there is something really subtle going on or I'm missing the knee action?

    • @amaterasu777
      @amaterasu777 Před 2 dny +1

      It's really subtle. But she's definitely using her knees - there's a down-up-down motion of your knee as you press, rise to rock to the front of your blade and turn, and them press back down.

    Got back from the rink. Yes, I tried this and it was a little rough at first but got pretty smooth after a few tries. 😊
    Again I ran into the flutist/skater who asked me to shoot a video of her doing her thing. At the end, she said she was getting ready to launch a little flute/skating club with the ultimate goal to do a fancy recital at the rink in a few years, and asked me if I was interested…definitely interested in the skating part. But not sure about the flute.
    BTW, this person seems to have her channel. Look up “세계최초 Figure Flutist” (just copy and paste that text) and you can see some of her performances. The latest video is the one I shot today.
