Hey everyone, the new HX firmware update gets your HX Stomp 8 blocks now! Highly worth updating to firmware 3.0 for that alone, along with all of the new amps/pedals. FYI - Line 6 has sent out a notice via email that audio output is corrupted on firmware 3.0, and to immediately update to 3.1 to fix the problem.

Scott...you are so correct about the cabs affecting the tone...people are always taking about changing pickups etc...and when I mention speaker cabs they give me the stink eye!!...great stuff my man!!!

Thanks, this is super helpful as I just got mine a couple weeks ago. I’ll check out the firmware update process as well. I like the tip about the input noise gate to save a block, and I was just trying to get more volume for recording yesterday so the output boost is also relevant. Cheers

Can you set your external foot switch to be a boost on all presets (globally), or do you have to do it patch by patch? I was trying to follow how you did that. I thought it only applied to one preset.

I'll use snapshots to both change mics, and mic distance too. Sometimes just boosting for a lead sounds a little too harsh and in your face, so I might back the distance up an inch or two, and occasionally will even change from a dynamic to a ribbon etc.

Second, I have a question: How many options of external switches have the Stomp? I mean: Can I assign, for example, 4 external switches to the Stomp (to have, in total, 7 switches to use)? Or it just support 2 external switches?
If you are coming out of the EXP, then yeah you only get 2 external foot switches. However, using the MIDI in/out you can get more with things like the Morning Star MC6. You can get 6 extra pedals with that.

I’m working on a video demoing my patches right now. Planning to release it ASAP, and I will for sure have a metal tone in it. But I can guarantee the hx stomp can produce some great metal tones 🤘

Yeah I wish I could get snapshot 4 & 5 with an external foot switch, but as of right now you only get 3 snapshots in the stomp. Hopefully someday!

This is the one that I use personally: amzn.to/3eLp7SP and I get about 4 hours out of it. But it just barely makes it to 4 hours haha. They do make ones that last longer as well. But this one has served me well.

It really is. I thought I would just use it for mostly fly gigs (you know... before Covid), but I find that I use this about 90-95% of the gigs I play. It’s pretty amazing.

Great video! The only downside to using TRS and those extra switches is that you lose your expression pedal (assuming you are using both switches).
I think there are MIDI foot switches you can get that will do the same thing but free up your expression pedal input.
Yup, you are correct. There are many many options out there. Since you can get two expression inputs in the one slot, I’ve used an expression pedal and a tap tempo before. I just found this setup more useful for me. But especially with being able to use the midi ports, there are a lot of options to expand on the Hx stomp. It’s a very well designed pedal!
@@ScottUhlMusic Yeah this thing is a Swiss Army Knife of pedals if I've ever seen one. I actually haven't purchased one yet, I'm GASing hard though and I've put one in my Amazon cart and removed it twice now. As awesome as it is, I don't know how much use I would get out of it as a bass player, though I do know they support bass and have plenty to offer, it's just that I typically run pretty clean, but man it looks like so much fun to play with! I'm kinda itching for one because they have some really nice DI models in there like Darkglass and SansAmp, plus plenty more to play with.
SansAmp is great for bass as well. But I do find myself almost always using the HX Stomp even over my full helix. It’s just so convenient. If I need multiple effects, I control it with midi messages from Ableton to load different patches. But using snapshot mode I usually am fine for my main 3 tones and a boost for 95% of the songs I play. It’s really valuable. I actually use it as my only pedal many times. It’s pretty sweet.

Not necessarily. It’s all about personal taste. If you like your specific external overdrive pedal, the Helix family works well with other pedals. If you like the OD in the Helix, then use that. It’s all about personal taste.
Scott is it possible (with the dual external footswitch) to add a 4th snapshot, and have the 5th, to scroll presets?
No, you only get 3 snapshots by default with the stomp. Hopefully someday!

How can you make a momentary switch function as a latch type? I'm having a difficult time getting my tap tempo switch to be able to turn on and off the output boost..
When you program it using “learn” you should be able to set it to momentary or latching. That’s likely the problem

Question about the rip cord, the wall charger is rated at 3A and the rip cable is 1A so was just curious if this poses a potential power issue? I don’t think the HX uses all 3A but is 1A enough?

Where is the acoustic simulator? If it’s an external pedal, it should effect the HX stomp at all. HX stomp will run out of DSP if you overload it with pedals. Especially the new ones like the poly shift pedal. But any external ones you should be good
@@ScottUhlMusic the new 3.01 software update has acoustic simulator in the EQ section ... it sounded good in some demos I heard ... curious as to its dsp requirements ....
Oh that’s right it does have that! I forgot. I haven’t messed with it, so I don’t know how dsp intensive it is...
Really interesting video. I am currently playing with a similar two button extension foot switch but I can't decide which way to set it up. I am alternating between using it for patch up/down or for FS function which allows me to change between screens. It involves a lot of tap dancing but in the FS function mode I can change the screen to allow patch up/down with FS1 and 2 and then once I have selected the patch I want I can flip the screen to show snapshots. I know it would be easier with a midi controller but this was a LOT cheaper. The problem is that I can't settle on a set up. It almost like there are too many options!
Have you tried other options such as these with FS4 and 5?
For my setup, I just find it easiest to be in snapshot mode, so 1 is a clean sound, 2 is a little more grit, and 3 is distortion. Then f4 is for a boost/solo (on any of the snapshots) and F5 is my tap tempo and tuner. That seems to be the best bang for the buck for only having 5 buttons IMO.
What frequency cuts would you recommend for bass? Most cabs don't even produce below 45 hz and above 4 - 5 kHz. Do you recommend starting there?
I would say start at 60hz and use your ear to clear out the mud. It really depends the sound you are going for, but don’t be afraid to scoop out a decent amount for more clarity. Trust your ears

I’m sure I’ve looked at them before due to bulky power supplies not fitting under my pedal board. Don’t have an HX Stomp yet but one thing that concerned me was the bulky power supply so it’s great to see that they work.

Hey Scott Could you tell me what FS4 and 5 do while in snapshot mode?
F4 and F5 are whatever pedal you assign them to while in snapshot mode. So the main 3 switches are snapshots and F4 and F5 are whatever you assign them to. For me, I have them assigned to boost (on the output) for F4 and tap tempo/tuner for F5

Hi since firmware 3.1 update , HX stomp now have 8 blocks , are they really all usable with DSP limitations ? Also is Extra 2 switches sufficient or should I invest on 3 or more ?
Yup, you can definitely use all of the blocks (DSP limited), so it's up to you. I find 5 footswiches is great for me and all I need. But if you need more than that, go for it. It just depends on your setup.
Can you copy a snapshot to a different Preset? Seems like that should be something easy to do....
I don’t believe so, unless you copied the entire preset over which would copy the snapshot

No actually I use a USB 5 to 9 converter got from Amazon that has 1A out but I had to cute the tip and soldier 2.5 by 5.5 power cord tip to make it work and swap the polarity

My hx stomp just always get freezing and no sound when I play one to two hours outdoor, why does it happen?😭😭😭😭

I would have to see your chain and settings. Is the external pedal plugged in correctly?
Yeah I’ve been using it to get Preset up and down for months.
Trying to assign foot switch 4 like you do in this video. Did everything you did and it’s not working. Go back to using it as preset up and down and it works fine so it’s not the switch
@@tommyburnhamsmusic Are you using "Bypass Assign" instead of "Controller assign"? So in my example when I wanted to change my boost level, I used Controller Assign. But when I wanted to turn on and off my Delay, I used Bypass Assign.
Is that a skin on your Stomp or a special edition?

Yup that’s correct. Or you can put it before or after the HX stomp if you don’t want to take up an extra block in the stomp (even though it has 8 blocks now, which is better than 6). That will give you a different tone since it puts it only at the beginning or only the end of the chain, but you might like that sound who knows. But the best way would be send and return IMO.

The DSP did not expand on the HX stomp. You can still easily get to 8 blocks if you don’t use super high DSP hogging blocks. So a send and return will basically be nothing on dsp

I’m assuming you mean plug in backing tracks and play along with the stomp and listen? I don’t think you can. Sorry :/

Is this better than the boss gt 1000 core?
I haven’t used it personally. I absolutely love my helix and hx stomp, but I personally do not get into the “processor/modeler wars.” I recommend hx stomp to people who ask, but I’ve heard great tones out of other modelers as well.

For sure. It comes down to what you need personally. The HX stomp 3.0 update allows 8 blocks now just FYI. I never find myself needing more than 8, and if I do I can alway create another patch.

I feel like the helix units are actually some of THE easiest to understand pedals as far as amp modelers and fx processors go. With anything there is a learning curve, but HX stomp and helix are actually really easy to program imo
Hey man, Im looking to start using Snapshot mode, But I need to keep the tap tempo available for my delays. Would any Tap Tempo switch work with the Stomp? I Saw that you mentioned the MXR Tap. Just wondering if I could use any other as well?
One of my next videos I was working on was about snapshot mode, so be sure to watch for that. Basically any tap tempo should work for the stomp. The MXR Tao is perfect because of how small it is. The TT2 is really nice because you get a 2nd button and it barely takes up any extra room.
