Same as Thom. Inspiration came from Michael Stipe of REM who was helping Thom out with his struggles with touring and fame. Stipe told Yorke just say to yourself, "I'm not here - this isn't happening."

If music can get to you during a depression....you did NOT have a depression at all. Depression would make you don't care about nothing emotionally so to claim you would get touched emotionally by a song during a depression, that's like totally the opposite of what a depression can do. Were you clinically diagnosed with a depression? I bet not.

This song was also based on Thom’s experience while headlining Glastonbury in 1997 - a legendary musical event. I was lucky enough to be there.
In the great film they made about touring OK Computer, ‘Meeting People is Easy’, Thom talks about looking out over the crowd, spanning as far as he can see, and says he had a feeling which was not human and completely ethereal. This is why the song’s lyrics include “Strobe lights and blown speakers, fireworks..”.
I also relate to this song as the feeling of being detached and alienated in the modern world, which I personally feel a lot due to certain mental conditions. It’s more than transcendental music, it’s a communication of the human experience which is hard to articulate.
There’s also a great live version of this song which is just Thom and his guitar, with Jonny on his beloved Ondes Martenot (an ethereal instrument if there ever was one) and a few other keyboard players (not band members) to create that wall of sound live. I’ll post link below.
I’d like to see you do Let Down from OK Computer at some point. My personal favourite.

You know a song is powerful when multiple people I've sent it to as a kind of intro to Radiohead told me the were crying during it. So much to say but will just point out per your remarks about their Cinematic quality - lead guitar and multi-instrumentalist Jonny Greenwood has been nominated twice for Academy Awards for orchestral film scores and is one the most highly sought out composers in modern cinema (he has done every one of brilliant Director Paul Thomas Anderson's films since they first linked up in what would become for both of them their master work - "There Will Be Blood"). Never a bad quality to have from your lead guitar player and #2 in the band! Thom also scored his first film "Suspiria" a couple years back. But Jonny is a genius of a entirely different type - his movie work is truly incredible, and while Thom writes virtually all the song cores (with some scattered exceptions) and lyrics, it is the combination of Thom and Jonny that really drives this band to the highest level. The other guys all do their parts with absolute mastery as well as does their Producer Nigel Godrich who is also - while being like their unofficial 6th member - very sought out by other big names like Paul McCartney and Beck and plenty more. This song is something special, for sure.

@dreww I wanted to tell these guys about the band and it’s intricacies. Especially regarding Jonny. But you’ve done it for me! Cheers.

As far as being cinematic, OK Computer has a track entitled "exit music for a film" and its a bloody masterpiece. They named their follow-up Kid A because it represents a new beginning for the band, happening at the start of a new millenium, with technology changing the paradigm. Kid A is named Kid A because he's the first post-human. The first track on the album is Kid A waking up.
