A statement from the incredible filmmaker, Johan Samuelsson:
"The Shift is about creativity, and the things that separate humans from robots. The idea for "The Shift" grew from the development of new Artificial Intelligence (AI) focused technology that simplify, and replace humans tasks and jobs. As a motion designer I experience this constantly in updated softwares, and countless of plug-ins that simplify daily tasks. For example some crafts that took several hours to complete by hand a couple of years ago, can now be done in a few minutes or have been entirely replaced AI technology. Eventually, together with the development of technology the techniques and mechanics of animation will be simplified to the extent that anyone will be able to produce a pretty moving image. However, I believe that the ability to create concepts and develop ideas cannot be replaced by technology."
Not yet, anyway. They used to say that about playing chess and composing music, too. 🤖
I read this as I was just in the middle of a tutorial where the teacher dropped in four different external libraries that do, a LOT of the heavy lifting for me... Great, that would be great, if I understood what they did, and how but I don't. I'm just supposed to take this and run with it.
I have a serious issue with dumbing down something when I'm trying to get to the CORE functionality of it, how it works, why it works and lastly? Do I want to use this?
You are correct, and our desire as a race to have everything simplified and shortened is NOT a good one. If we had to fend for ourselves for any of the myriad of possiblities, we'd have to re-learn everything from the beginning again...
"...the (human) ability to create concepts and develop ideas cannot be replaced by technology."
OTOH, we often cannot understand or duplicate AI work. Call it even?
Humans and AIs have different abilities, different expertises. If both become inteligent, expect a symbiotic relationship: evolve together with AI and incorporate it.
Sarà, ma il senso di questo video è riservato ai geek.
so that justifies copying the ship design from star wars?
Raising kids in VR environments to learn creativity seems like a pretty creative idea already. Reminds me of Commander Data getting all emotional about not having emotions.
Yeah, that is the main issue in the plot here: In order to escape human control, AI needs to already have developed creativity because that feat needs innovation to occur.
😂
Raising kids in VR, that's so wrong, especially since it has nothing to do with the real world, it's bad enough it seems a lot of people are losing grip on reality as is smh.
I liked it.
It did remind me of Star Wars though.
With the AI building looking like an Imperial base & the lightsaber looking device. Along with a Clone troop carrier ship.
The AI building isn't Star Wars, it's Blade Runner. It's the Tyrell building 100%. Everything in this is Blade Runner, The Matrix, and Star Wars put in a blender...
It’s worth remembering when commenting that someone put work and creativity into these projects, just try to enjoy them.
Hope you enjoyed It :)
As AI has yet to develop creativity it goes without saying that "someone" used theirs to create this. And I did enjoy it, however, why someone would suggest that others "just try to" do the same seems a bit narcissistic and odd. I suppose the same can be said of my response, which is thanks for your suggestion but mind your own business.
No. I'm allowed to negatively comment if I want.
Yeah, and they're also supposed to be good, genius. Or at least entertaining to watch.
In a short 6 minutes, you build a big story, no words spoken, just imagery, portrayed emotions, and sound. Exquisite!
Glad you liked It Bruce! Really had to scale the idea down in order to make It work :)
Attention all artists who want to draw a broken suspension bridge, PLEASE learn how they work. There seems to be a post-apocalyptic art meme where the Golden Gate Bridge has one busted cable, and it just hangs in space like some Backrooms physics shit. Please, kids. It's a small request.
Ha, I get it. It's like, every time I see a movie where there is a scene with an elevator, and people are climbing thru the 'trap door' in the ceiling of the elevator... There are _no_ trap doors in elevators! Never, ever.
If one types "Sci fi" into the search bar there, this here is the top result. Fair play, but also; huh?
Nothing can ever compare to the creativity of the human mind. Our emotions play a huge part in the things we create, so does our experiences and learned techniques. Sure you can program a bot to perform tasks, but it’s never going to be fluid and whimsical. If we left it up to codes and tasks performed by machines, this world presented in this film is exactly what it would look like.
The Golden Gate Bridge in disrepair is a sure sign of an apocalyptic future.
It's like a reverse Matrix, you are in there, but you don't see it. And also the rescuers aren't inside the planet but outside the planet. Besides that, pretty good story, and an amazing way of telling it.
As of this month, this video has become all the more relevant...
Back to the future hover board, E.T. phone home light , lightsaber and some Blade Runner theme like music in the end. Probably more... Not sure about the story
You forgot the "I Robot" suspension bridge.
And the ship from Star Wars prequels
A friend recommended this channel and I'm on a binge 😅 .. great stuff
_There is a war, up there, where suns are bloated red and time itself creaks with age. Their ultimate intelligence. Our ultimate intelligence. The lone being. The triune being. Two singularities in brutal conflict, conscripting their pawns of carbon and silicon across eons of time._ ~ adapted from The Hyperion Cantos.
Much love to the filmmaker from a fellow sci-fi storyteller
Well done. Extremely absorbing without any dialogue forces the viewer to focus on the other senses which delivers the messages with other sounds and imagery. I liked it! Would like to see more!
Happy you liked It Eric. For future projects and updates follow the_shift_film on instagram.
@@johansamuelsson_art brilliant short
Someone please explain what happened.
"Light"Metal
The story is really keeps you watching. But this animation though... Especially THAT ONE face expression with the mouth crushed in the nose
Sweet 👍
Yes
I really enjoyed that.
Very thought provoking as to what is to come in the future
Glad you liked It!:)
Very nice, like to see more.
But... how old is this? Remember seeing this a while ago.
Keep up the good work, Dust!
Yea I had the exact same feeling like i had watched this before.
Yes, I either saw this here or in Love, Death, + Robots before.
Yes this is definitely a repost.
Maybe on this channel, maybe on another, as the better films tend to do the rounds, so even reading a billing claiming a 'premiere' may not necessarily mean that, but refers only to it being a premiere on that specific channel.
Yes indeed, I seem to have seen this before
Incredible video!! Watched it twice, just to make sure I didn't miss anything!! Whoever (s) made it are artists!!
Thank you! happy you liked It John :)
Like
That was a nice little escape :)
A truly Dust worthy animation! Great job!
nice
Killer soundtrack!
the human race becomes more and more sophisticated..... !👈😱✍️✍️✍️✍️
That robot design at 3:58 gives me nightmares...
No dialogue needed. Similar to Samurai Jack episodes. Nice going. Wanna see more of it!
Glad you liked it. Future projects and updates on the_shift_film on instagram :)
Samurai Jack is master class.
The mind that fries, so to does the illusion die!
That was fantastic; thoughtful, relevant, and nice delivery too! Thoroughly enjoyed and warning heeded.
Thanks
6minutes gone...and soon forgotten.
this type of cartoon feels nostalgic and some how familiar
Maybe you watched the 90th superhero cartoon like I did! :)
I believe this is a re-uploaded video. I have seen it twice before. It was listed as a new video each time.
Super 👍
Oh how scary 👻
it will make a great music video as well
generally, I like DUST short films to every pioneer keep going to produce great films
Reminded me of the matrix when neo first woke up.
👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Nice
Certified Gold!!!!!
If AI will master creativity then in future humans will only be found in museums or zoo.
San Francisco where star trek takes place
✨👽✨
Im getting blade runner vibes
Congratulation to Johan Samuelsson and his out of this creation team. Plot, sci-fi, sound, music, draws and simplicity are incredible. Not only in the near future, we the humanity will face those dangers but they will also only consist of an implementation of the directives in artificial intelligence that both governments and their agencies apply today either so that we focus our attention on a single thing or to live in a reality, if not parallel, distorted. With such luck, a rebellion of the machines will not be necessary, but human resistance will be. Question: Part two of this unique piece called The Shift will be realished?. "Your" creativity means so much to us.
Great story, creators were definitely Star Wars fans. Guy finds a light saber and clone troop attack ships!
Reminded me of the Animatrix. Didn’t understand what the lightsaber-looking things was though.
Some kind of EMP generator, I suspect.
@@stevenscott2136 Right on :)
cool
watched it twice. Still no clue
Who drew the suspension bridge in the last scene? In reality, the broken cables wouldn't support themselves in midair like that. Ever heard of gravity, tension, or physics in general?
I like abstraction, but this story is a bit to lightweight.
The birth of a Jedi and light saber
I liked the short film, but in what it means I think it has many holes, because if the character was "deceived" for 15 years without seeing reality, what did he eat, where did he bathe, or where did he really live?
Now your out of the garden. Run to the briar patch…..your future is dust;)
so, looks like they were looking for this kid and sent an SOS beacon for him.
If Caillou starts whining I’m gonna freak lol
wasn't this already uploaded before?
I see a couple of Star Wars inspirations here?...
Should try Abraham Maslow hierarchy of needs
THESES DUST SHORT FILMS ARE FUCKING NOT TO FUCKING BAD AT ALL.
I'm the only one disappointed the light saber didn't.......light saber?
What kind of animation would you call this? Always liked this style.
I was waiting for Necrontyr.
🟦....(After 2:11):
I wanna know how his hover-board caught-up with him after he jumped out the window?
I don't think Creativity will be the issue.
Curiosity and empathy will be the problem for AI.
Get story.
Black Mirror Episode has a similar concept with a green laser jamming and brain chip to alter what person saw and felt, even dream were controlled. 😃
Allot doesnt make sense, is it VR or AR, because that device he found was real, robots were real at the start but at the end they wernt
Ah this short wasn't that "award winning" after all?... Nice model at 5:35... Is that a troop transport from Star Wars
Great story....maybe used the "concerned over-the-should look" too many times IMO. Budgets I suppose. Nice job.
I know it was six minutes long but your story was really lite on substance. Maybe I missed something. Possibly the filmmaker wanted his/her audience to focus on the animation and not the story.
what this kid lived thru, immersive semi-virtual reality or augmented reality?
Well, I'm a little slow, sometimes, I'll admit I did not get it. But I liked it, can someone please explain to me what happened?
The Matrix revisited.
that boy at age 15 looks like age 20-25
This looks familiar. Has this been on Dust before?
Wake up, viewer!
Facebook 🥂
Whyd he have the same look over his shoulder so many times
Amazing Story 👍👍
Im only too aware that we're not allowed to say anything negative about these things for fear of facing the ire of the internet.....
i didnt understand anything
🙂
🐼 Big Bear Hugs from a 68 yr old grandma in Kirby, Texas, USA 🐼 ❤ 🎀 ❤
I spotted the spelling mistake at 0:57 ... and somehow that just put me off .......
🤖
I spent 3 minutes under the impression "it's about to get good" but got tired of waiting so I left. This is boring.
Cool video, but certain "AI" can already create, mainly imitate and mash together, most human creativity in a static media. 😅
Why humen's counting is lower in matter of geniuses ness... we need to learn more from nature we didn't know what is next?....
Short but sweet
Deep af!
it is a trap... I saw that everytime. lock, release, persuit, exterminate all
Are you awake
Personally, l have no idea what just happened 😕 for the first time
So, what if you shuffled the scripts for Blade Runner and the Matrix (plus, throw in a Lightsaber-ish device)? Even the soundtrack was totally Blade Runner. I can see this as a "These were my influences" kind of homage.
But, The contacts were able to monitor what he sees. Fair enough, that exists now. Apparently, it also gives him a Matrixy vision of an artificial world. Conceivable. The audio and tactile illusions, however, are a different matter. That's an incomprehensible amount of data streaming bidirectionally trough contact lenses (which must connect neurally to give his nerve endings the sensations required).
Finally, none of this allows the robots to measure 'creativity' (the whole stated purpose of this experiment). Their data might show actions taken, but not the thought process of what options were weighed and chosen or rejected (creativity). It would have made more sense to have him in a lab with electrodes to measure brain activity as he was subjected to various stimuli. There's no need for an overly complicated Matrix world - creativity can happen in any environment, and this infant will not know any other reality as he grows...
Creativity is a quality of divinity. No AI will ever have it.
Were a bunch of these Dust videos compiled and tossed into a Netflix series? Love Death n Robots? as many of the videos there seem so familiar like seen them here before..??
Yes. I have seen it twice before. It was listed as new each time.
Someone copied the LAAT gunship from star wars.
Sorry people ... not my future.
