    A statement from the incredible filmmaker, Johan Samuelsson:
    "The Shift is about creativity, and the things that separate humans from robots. The idea for "The Shift" grew from the development of new Artificial Intelligence (AI) focused technology that simplify, and replace humans tasks and jobs. As a motion designer I experience this constantly in updated softwares, and countless of plug-ins that simplify daily tasks. For example some crafts that took several hours to complete by hand a couple of years ago, can now be done in a few minutes or have been entirely replaced AI technology. Eventually, together with the development of technology the techniques and mechanics of animation will be simplified to the extent that anyone will be able to produce a pretty moving image. However, I believe that the ability to create concepts and develop ideas cannot be replaced by technology."

      I read this as I was just in the middle of a tutorial where the teacher dropped in four different external libraries that do, a LOT of the heavy lifting for me... Great, that would be great, if I understood what they did, and how but I don't. I'm just supposed to take this and run with it.
      I have a serious issue with dumbing down something when I'm trying to get to the CORE functionality of it, how it works, why it works and lastly? Do I want to use this?
      You are correct, and our desire as a race to have everything simplified and shortened is NOT a good one. If we had to fend for ourselves for any of the myriad of possiblities, we'd have to re-learn everything from the beginning again...

      "...the (human) ability to create concepts and develop ideas cannot be replaced by technology."
      OTOH, we often cannot understand or duplicate AI work. Call it even?
      Humans and AIs have different abilities, different expertises. If both become inteligent, expect a symbiotic relationship: evolve together with AI and incorporate it.

    Raising kids in VR environments to learn creativity seems like a pretty creative idea already. Reminds me of Commander Data getting all emotional about not having emotions.

    • @thomasrdiehl
      @thomasrdiehl Před 2 lety +4

      Yeah, that is the main issue in the plot here: In order to escape human control, AI needs to already have developed creativity because that feat needs innovation to occur.

      As AI has yet to develop creativity it goes without saying that "someone" used theirs to create this. And I did enjoy it, however, why someone would suggest that others "just try to" do the same seems a bit narcissistic and odd. I suppose the same can be said of my response, which is thanks for your suggestion but mind your own business.

    Nothing can ever compare to the creativity of the human mind. Our emotions play a huge part in the things we create, so does our experiences and learned techniques. Sure you can program a bot to perform tasks, but it’s never going to be fluid and whimsical. If we left it up to codes and tasks performed by machines, this world presented in this film is exactly what it would look like.

    Congratulation to Johan Samuelsson and his out of this creation team. Plot, sci-fi, sound, music, draws and simplicity are incredible. Not only in the near future, we the humanity will face those dangers but they will also only consist of an implementation of the directives in artificial intelligence that both governments and their agencies apply today either so that we focus our attention on a single thing or to live in a reality, if not parallel, distorted. With such luck, a rebellion of the machines will not be necessary, but human resistance will be. Question: Part two of this unique piece called The Shift will be realished?. "Your" creativity means so much to us.

    So, what if you shuffled the scripts for Blade Runner and the Matrix (plus, throw in a Lightsaber-ish device)? Even the soundtrack was totally Blade Runner. I can see this as a "These were my influences" kind of homage.
    But, The contacts were able to monitor what he sees. Fair enough, that exists now. Apparently, it also gives him a Matrixy vision of an artificial world. Conceivable. The audio and tactile illusions, however, are a different matter. That's an incomprehensible amount of data streaming bidirectionally trough contact lenses (which must connect neurally to give his nerve endings the sensations required).
    Finally, none of this allows the robots to measure 'creativity' (the whole stated purpose of this experiment). Their data might show actions taken, but not the thought process of what options were weighed and chosen or rejected (creativity). It would have made more sense to have him in a lab with electrodes to measure brain activity as he was subjected to various stimuli. There's no need for an overly complicated Matrix world - creativity can happen in any environment, and this infant will not know any other reality as he grows...
