      Any tips specifically for low HP carts and heavy people?
      Going go-carting next weekend and the carts thy have at the venue are only 9hp and I weigh 200 lbs, I am sure that being 6'4 also ads a lot of aero-drag as well.
      Have I got any chance of beating people that weigh 120 lbs or less?

      stay smooth, try not to scrub speed. It will definitely be hard, but I've seen bigger people be plenty fast. An advantage you may have is your extra weight will create more heat giving you more friction often letting you go through a corner at higher speeds.

      Will better traction allow me to cut corners more tightly?
      Should I try to stick closer to corners or follow a racing line that has minimal steering input?

      More traction simply means you shouldn't need to slow vehicle as much. Your line should stay the same regardless of how much friction you gain due to your weight. If you want to get tips on racing line, I have a helpful video (although it's my first and the quality bugs me) that explains the concepts of the racing line. Feel free to ask questions as you have them :)

    I should’ve started earlier with Go-Karts but unfortunately in my country racing on 4 wheels doesn’t mean that much which really sucks cuz for me it’s everything I need. Literally I’d die for this. The biggest problem is money of course because it’s an expensive sport.

    Think its important to get people to understand slip angle when trying to explain (no sliding) because you can get people driving like train tracks avoiding any slip at all. Its also not totally correct to say sliding is always slower, on corner entry in some select scenarios going a little beyond the slip angle can give you that bit of extra rotation and allow you to brake less in your straight lined zone and carry a little extra speed to the apex as long as you get it straightened up in time especially in more higher powered karts.

    Weight transfer was never something I considered when racing karts, OR letting letting off throttle/trail braking if you can't turn!!
    I definitely will try those out at my next race!

    steering input question ... playing around at our track, I have been having a problem getting the kart to stick ... noticed the other day, instead of picking and holding a line (constant steering pressure), I kind of would tighten and losen the input into the turn .. seems to work, am I on to something?

    It’s not easy to avoid drifting or sliding when you’re driving on the limit & that’s simply something you need to do otherwise you’re too slow

    I like how you rest your brake foot on the front of the chassis, what do you do when someone spins suddenly, just plow into them at full speed? Whoever is designing those tracks needs to put more braking zones, racing without having to brake is way too easy.

      The problem was, the karts sucked at this place and the only way to get front grip is if you push the seat all the way forward. Not an issue if you are shorter, but I'm 6 feet tall. So, in order to stop myself from pressing the break I eventually just lazily put my foot up there.
      I completely agree that the track sucked, but where I live that is the best place sadly. If I had any of my old videos from my karting days, I would have used them in an instant.

    3:56 Do NOT shove or bump your opponent when overtaking. It's seen as unnecessary aggression, and might cause you to be penalized, as well as a spin for both karts. Overtaking aggressively is always an option, but a clean approach is always better, and contact needs to be avoided at all costs. It's always the overtaking kart's responsibility to ensure the maneuver does not end up in a crash.

Was at an event this weekend, basic rule is if the staff waves the blue&orange flag it means you need to more over because you're too slow. Had a couple people completely ignoring the flags, so they definitely got a few nudges from me lol

    Oh dear, I went karting for the first time yesterday and when I started on the track I was drifting and sliding around tight corners constantly because I was braking too quickly.
    I got more confident as I spent time on the track, and it was just me and my dad doing a casual time trial session and I'm looking forward to doing more of it.

    Nice video! I agree with these, and I think one tip I would add (that you mostly covered in different steps) is to build your speed. Too often, I see people hitting the track trying to *immediately* be fast. It's important to learn the layout, the apexes, the track surface and the characteristics of the kart before you really start throwing it around.
    On a side note: This place sucks. It seems Pole Position was more focused on having a long track than they were having a fun track with places for passing opportunities. They didn't even offer any interpretation for racing lines; you're either on it or in the barriers.

    "Don't drift or slide" what about really tight tracks like DS Speed Zamość? You have to slide because half of the turns are hairpins and if you don't drift, you will be not only slower but also someone will have to push you out of the outside tyres because you're blocking the turn

    I’ve been driving for 8 years with my own kart and got up to a national level. This guy is saying some stuff right but I wouldn’t say he’s a “professional”. Just someone who is fast on a indoor track and doesn’t know true karting

    3:56 Contrary to what this guy says, do NOT give an opponent a "little shove" - it's unprofessional, illegal and you'll be black flagged for it. This guy just proved right there that he's just a weekend driver and not a pro!

      If you are on a public indoor kart arena that overtaking is hard because of no consistent drive of newcomers its sometimes good to help yourself. If they are no competition to you why would waste time and make possible dangerous situations with them. Im not saying pushing them out of track just let them know.

    I went for the first time today, I had no idea how much grip the carts had, I already had prior knowledge about watching f1 racing but when I see a corner in a car, we slow down so I expected that I needed to slow down each corner
    I already had the racing line in my head but I’d slow down to not over spin😂😂 the last lap I didn’t need to even touch the break 😂😂

    I went in for my first time today without looking up tips and I sucked major ass. I hate losing so my moral was so low and I was annoyed as hell. Every turn was rough and the track I was in had more than 5 sharp af turns (not sure if it was the best for like the most beginners like me) haha and there was barely any distance to pick up on full speed if I was losing it with a bad turn maneuver. Thanks for the tips, next time I go, I’m hoping not to get last three times in a row...

    I am a major car enthusiast but I'm not old enough to drive a car, so I'm trying go-karting, luckily enough I'm going on a play date to a go kart track, I play alot of racing on xbox controller but this really helped, only question is should I worry about slipstreaming?

      Dude this isnt forza. Slipstreaming in a rental kart is going to do nothing in terms of speeding you up. But still follow your opponents if they are on the racing line. pass them when you get to a section you are faster in or they spin like a scrub and follow when your are slower, this way you can be the fastest.

    This is a question from a complete amateur. I just went to an indoor kart place today and I was trying to figure out for myself how to go fast.
    I'm familiar with the idea that rolling around the corner rather than sliding is generally faster but it seemed to me that with the really tight corners the quickest way round was to jab the brake as you turned in to bring the back around.
    I take my front wheel drive car (Fiesta ST) to the racetrack every now and then and I 've figured out that a dab on the brake in mid corner helps to bring the back around.
    Is this no slide rule written in stone?

      When is comes to front wheel drive cars, personally I have never raced one, but can see the advantage of rotating the car with the brakes to counteract the natural under-steer. When discussing hard set rules in racing the only thing that matters is what is faster, I can tell you what is usually faster but the stop watch doesn't lie. No technique will be the fastest in every scenario.

      I have been a racing instructor for 2 years at two different schools, and I've been racing for 14 years. I hold 3 track records 4 national titles and the VMB rising star award. I have been waiting for someone to comment this, I really should have a video about who I am. Although I would like to make that video, I hardly have enough time for school and work as it is and I don't think that video would help people to become better drivers.

    Never ever brake while in a corner. The braking and you trying to steer compromise sending you off. Always brake before the corner so you can take the perfect apex

      The actual answer is because all the weight gets transferred to the front under braking so there is less grip on the back tires, resulting in a high chance of spinning off you brake before you turn, and never use 100% of the throttle during a corner as it transfers all the weight to the back resulting in less front end grip, inducing understeer. (Brake in a corner and oversteer will be highly likely Accelerate in a corner and understeer will be highly likely, that's if the karts have a decent amount of power. My local Karts have 15 hp unsure if that is a lot compared to other places but I don't really need to worry about weight transfer in the circuit. So I'll assume it's not.

    Which way should you lean when entering corners especially higher speed ones outside on tarmac/asphalt

      In professional karting they setup the seat position to give a twisting force on the chasis to lift the inside wheel. You lift the inside wheel for 1 reason with a couple of specific outcomes, you lift the wheel because the axle is solid. With a solid axle there is no diff to keep both rear wheels moving at the speed of the exact piece of track they are on. So with a solid axle the inside wheel at any turn will be travelling slower than the outside wheel because it covers less distance. So the inside wheel needs raising because as it is turning slower there is a braking effect on the ground, lifting the inside wheel allows just the truly loaded tyre to be giving all its grip and prevent the slower inside wheel from connecting to the ground.
      So in any corner, you are always loading up the outside tyres, lean outwards if you have to.

    I don't know if this is relevant or not, but I'm going to ask it anyway. I experience bumping on my kart 1 or 2 times when I exit the turn. Do you have any idea why and how did it happen? Was it because I open throttle to early or was is just the problem with the kart?

      Honestly, I'm a lot more educated and qualified to help you choose which super car to drive over which go-kart is the best these days. I recommend you take a trip to a local kart shop, they should be able to give you some accurate advice for which kart would suit you best.

      In the faster personally owned karts we would lean into the turn to try and equalize the weight the best we could. However, I've been seeing the people who work there lean outward. I theorize this is because the tires are actually stones this helps to better force them into the track. Just try both ways, I lean into the turn out of habit but that might not be the best for indoor karts.

      When you hit the brakes where does the weight go? If the weight is forward where is it not? if you don't have very much rear weight what might happen? This is also a good way to give yourself more front grip. Another cause could be if you lock up your rear tires, they become essentially rubber blocks and no longer control the direction of the vehicle.

      You should resist leaning as it throws off the balance of the kart. Take advantage of those electric karts with better weight distribution by doing so.

    you said let go of the throttle when understeering, that's bs I do karting professionally in rotax max challenge and when you under steer you have to slowly accelerate, like on a wet track you would understeer, basically just 'steer with the throttle'.

    Thanks for the tips. I'm forty kilograms heavier than my racing fiends. Approximately 100kg. I am much fitter though. I work out approximately five to six days a week. We are all about the same racing ability. Do you have any tips for me as a heavier person whilst racing these carts where weight makes such a major difference. Thank you

      E Man You can either add weight to your friends karts or add a strut from your seat to the back of the kart to transfer your weight to the back (only works when your kart is powerful and doesn't have much grip otherwise understeer will be a problem) also you can take some time to setup your kart. These things only apply if you have your own karts otherwise there's not much you can do really but hope it might help you!

    Tip number 1 is false in gokarting... I went gokarting in London and the dude drifted every turn going pretty much full speed and he beat me while I was hitting ever apex and I couldn't keep up. I asked him after what he was doing and he pretty much told me he was going full speed and drifting around the turns. He was also a rally driver so explains why he knew exactly how to drift around the curves lol

      Its not really false but dont slide and think its faster than gripping. I guess that rally driver knows how to do all of that because of his rally experience.

      there is sometimes a even faster setting for indoor karts, bet that was it.

    Sorry I dont know how did you came up with statement that sliding means a loss of time. When it comes to driving on the edge, and especially ON KARTS that has NO DIFFERENCIAL(that means you are sliding even at the slightest turning-but karts got it partially fixed by special and precise steering under angle) it is essential to slide a bit. I probably know how did you mean it(big slides and drifts) but you have to be more detailed than. And by the way, even most sports and race cars professional drivers use this little oversteer to their advantage(Radical race cars for example). And yes, I am talking about the world elite drivers.
    1:21 again I dont know why did you used the most stupid and not true example of how the slides slowes you. You call yourself a PROFESSIONAL RACING INSTRUCTOR?? Than you would not use a noob driver as an example going too fast and narrow into a corner, suddenly slapping the brakes and steering wheel(on the actual footage it caused just steering because he was on the wrong, inside side of the track logically with too much speed-you cant make it if you dont loose time and speed by harsh sliding. I am curious how "slower" he would get by approaching all the way from the left, closing in the turn, hitting the apex and exiting on the left-first two or three sections of the corner with steering wheel about at the center), what made him going off the perfect line, what was the reason he drastically lose time.

      You don’t really, you tune your ackerman, toe and rear track width to get the inside rear wheel of the ground on turn in and then it will turn in when sliding

      Greg Speed he's appealing to that crowd exactly. you'll notice that every north American 10 year old knows everything and is too cool for the room. (thank you marketing department..) if you don't speak to them their way the door never opens.
      Normally I'd never suggest giving into that crap but this is a hobby video for fun, and the information is helpful. The OP can't fix our gleeful decay all on his own and this wouldn't be the place to start.

    Go kart racing is a joke. Whoever usually gets started at front usually wins. If you start in last place, its almost impossible to pass 10 people.
