Projects: store things you are actively working on (ex: office reno, upcoming trip to Europe)

Hey guys, this PARA dont work in real life LOL.
i faced lots of issues with it . I finally moved to tag system which is more efficient than the folders.
      Eg:
meeting comes under AREAS , but it also relates to PROJECT. We cannot keep duplicate files of meeting in both AREA and PROJECTS .
We have many such things which causes friction between AREAS and PROJECTS.
Its a complete messup with PARA method

    • @JuliesiPhoneVideos
      @JuliesiPhoneVideos Před měsícem

I think it is less a problem with para and more with the categories you are using in area.
      My understanding (may be wrong)
Meetings should not be an area. Meeting notes go into the related project or area. If the notes are not just specific to the project the can be an area or resource and reference by the project.

The exact problem I have. When you reorganize all this stuff, you feel like you are doing something. But in reality you are just procrastinating. I bought Tiago’s book the same week of its release after consuming his YT content and have yet to implement it. Not a fault of his, bc his system makes so much sense, it’s just always seemed like a daunting task. But something about you actually documenting that process and outlining the time it took, the scares you had, and the silly things you kept over the years just made it more relatable and gave me a vision of what a starting point looks like. I especially admire your declaration of not switching your notes app and getting his input of working from the bottom-up until it breaks before “upgrading” bc I’m so guilty of being sucked into trying the newest tech in hopes it’ll solve the clutter in my brain. For my daily work I take notes on my tablet with Samsung notes. For my therapy sessions and take notes on the tablet too. On CZcams I use the watch later to help me manage my watch time and if I want to save a video to my future self, I send a message to myself on WhatsApp

Best review: The content of the book is: 1. make notes 2. organize files in projects, areas, resources and archives (para) 3. start generating output based on your notes. That is not worth more than a blog post post Getting Things Done. The rest of the book is filler material in the form of anecdotes and it is hard to find any actionable content because of all the fluff. The bonus chapter advertised in the TOC is only provided as a PDF, you are forced to provide your E-Mail address, before getting an E-Mail with the link.

August Bradley's PPV system is also a useful structure. Although, I think most of us can just reduce the amount of notes we are taking. I've gone back to a simple Bullet Journal for most day-to-day tasks, and Notion for project management.
We are just procrastinating. We are so focused on becoming the most productive, while spending ridiculous amounts of time working on a perfect "system". Take out a pen and paper, and leave most of what you think you need to write down, to further contemplation. We probably don't really need to be consuming as much as we do.
I think a lot of us just need to reduce our input, go deeper into fewer things, and that way we can have a better idea of what is important to take down in notes. How many ideas or articles do we really need to delegate for our future selves?

I think para is nice for organizing files, but not for notes. My notes are not only about projects and areas, but also about stuff I learn. If I put this all in a “Self development” or “Learning” area, it becomes an overloaded mess real quick. On the flip side if you try to add too much structure to study notes, you become too focused on organization and less on studying. I found zettelkasten + obsidian to be a nice minimalist balance between effort of organization and result.

I agree, I have bunch of notes/quotes from books I've read or study notes that just doesn't fall into any of those categories. I also found digital notes don't stick with me as well as hand written notes. Is the zettelkasten method working well for you?

Seems we all are struggling and scratching the at same questions. A few weeks ago I was rearranging my Notes using PARA method, after watching a dozen of videos about 2nd brain. At some point, I thought that was too much for me and saw Matt's video about Apple Notes. That sounded so simple, minimalist and more healthy that I just copied the structure and lived my life happy haha. Now, Matt brings the PARA to your own system. The conclusion for me is: no one knows the way, the answers... we're all searching mechanisms to find solutions that fits our life. To live is to try out. And that's beautiful :)

I love your comments, so do I, always overwhelmed by the new different apps. But after watching Matt’s video, the essence of taking note is not about learning new - fancy apps- it’s about living my life more organized, simple, and happy. I also decided to use Apple Notes mostly.

    Matt - Excellent video.
I offer the following ideas and suggestions.
#1 - PARA - I consider Tiago Forte to be a professional when it comes to productivity systems. The rest of us are amateurs. No matter how well-conceived the PARA system is, I don’t think it is a good choice for us amateurs. Why? Because there is little to no basis for the names of the folders that materialize. They are commonly concepts (maybe even abstractions) that were important at the time they were created, but which can be forgotten a couple months / couple years down the road. Consequently, it is commonly challenging for amateurs to remember what folder they put a note in. - - - I highly recommend that most people adopt a folder structure in which the names of the folders are objects. Examples are Art, Education, Equipment, Financial, Food, Medical, Politics, Products, Religion, Science, Shopping, and Utilities.
#2 - Tags - Every note organization system needs to define the basis for the folder structure and the basis for the tag structure. The PARA system does the former, but your system doesn’t use tags. You will benefit greatly by determining how to incorporate tags into to your system. I view a Tag as information “about” a Note, not the content of the Note. They are commonly called “Meta” data. Here are a couple example of Tag structures:
    * PARA (Projects, Areas, Resources, Archives).
    * Note Type (Email, Invoice, Article, Instructions, Map, MeetingNote, Picture, ProblemLog, Receipt).
    * Your Roles (Son, Spouse, Father, Engineer).
Of course, one of the great features of Tags is that a Note can have multiple Tags. It’s like putting a piece of paper in multiple manila folders at the same time.
#3 - Smart Folders - I have found this Apple Notes function to be very helpful for finding Notes. A user can specify a variety of criteria with which the app will produce a list of Notes that meet the criteria. One that I use almost every day is a Smart Folder that lists all Notes I edited in the last 2 days.
#4 - Apple Notes - Use it. Avoid 3rd party apps. - - - There are a couple disadvantages of 3rd party apps. While they increase productivity, they also increase complexity, more than most users need. Secondly, a 3rd party app may be developed by a company that may not even exist in a couple years. - - - Also, in the last 2-3 years, Apple has released new versions of Apple Notes with significant functional enhancements. A good example is the “Scan Text” function. When reading a book/article, it is an easy matter for a user to scan text with his/her iPhone directly into Apple Notes. This is a function of the “Read Wise” 3rd party app that Tiago mentioned.

i'm so surprised you didn't end up using (or weren't already using) a more sophisticated "second brain" note-taking app like obsidian! (or notion since it's free and syncs everywhere). maybe try the Zettelkasten method next time for a new video and see how you find it?? :D
personally, rather than organising things into lots of different folders (something i'd defs get too lazy to do over time), i use different apps for different types of notes. Bear for recipes and travel (and just hashtag it accordingly), Notion and Obsidian for proper studying/note-taking (work vs personal learning), SimpleNote for when i need a post-it to write down a phone number or something, etc. i feel like different notes apps are more geared towards different types of note taking, so while having all your notes in one place is usually a plus point, this works way better for me than forcing all my notes into 1 type of notes app (and struggling to keep it organised). i automatically just open a different app for my purpose. and i'm never going to combine my study notes with my recipes for example so i'm not missing out on any potential connections between my notes or whatever.

Surprised to see this video is about BASB! Glad I checked it out. 💯% stick with your notes app until you reach a point where you long for it to do something else. Simplicity is key. Its about getting your work done and not having to think too much about maintaining the system.
And the read-later app is great because you'll collect so much content initially and then revisit them wondering why you captured it in the first place. This is a great filter that informs you about what you really value.

I also fell into the trap of "trying everything and see what sticks", but I quickly found out that I was using every app and no app at the same time. My notes were all over these apps, and couldn't find shit.
So, one day, I just opened Tom Franks Second Brain template video, and started making my own in Notion. And now I'm using it everyday!
I made proper areas, I store resources like notes, articles, videos in appropriate projects, I save web clips using Notion Web Clipper and Share feature in Android and much more.
The main thing is to stick to one app, that's it!
Good Luck to everyone who's trying to figure this out the hard way!

I read Tiago's book a few months ago, and when I put it down, my question was...Who is this book for?
If you're any type of writer, content creator, project manager, or anyone who has to DO THINGS on a daily basis, this book is sort of superfluous. Somehow, Tiago Forte is able to stretch his thesis into 60,000 words when I can do it in a single sentence:
If you want to remember things better, just write them down.
Here's the thing: humans have been writing stuff on stuff for 100,000+ years. From stone to tablets to parchment to paper to now digital tools, humans have always recorded the things that matter; have always made lists, journaled, saved things for later. This is not a new concept and in fact I find it kind of insulting that Tiago Forte has the audacity to pretend he's onto something revolutionary when he says "that website you like, just save the pertinent information from it in your phone's notes app."
Also, Tiago, there is real science behind the notion that the best way to remember things is not in some digital folder/notes system but by actually WRITING things. In a notebook. Even your case studies in this book all focus on people who WROTE their notes. There is something chemical in your brain that actuates when writing by hand that does not happen when copying and pasting information into a digital note. That's not how the human brain operates.
If you're considering this book, save yourself the 3 hours it would take to read it by following this advice-if you want to remember things, if you want to be more creative, just...write stuff down.
