    Great video that really set me up for success when tackling the same repairs/replacements on my 2.0t ATS AWD, Tom. Just a few notes, I'm sure it was omitted for time, but you want to make sure you reinstall the ABS Sensor to the wheel hub after the hub is torqued down; also, the bolts on the forward and rearward front lower control arms are 'torque to yield' bolts (one time use - they lose their elasticity and can snap when reused), make sure you order new bolts for those two points when you are replacing or even just uninstalling them to replace the knuckle. For a few extra dollars, it could save you from a catastrophic failure while flying along the road. Thanks for sharing this video, it is hard to find good instructional videos for the ATS online. Can't wait to see you tackle the timing chain and water pump replacement before I have that need myself!

    Glad i seen this! My Ats ball joints went bad. Unfortunately that sucks that GM make you replace that whole piece. Welp lol gotta put these parts in. Thanks again 👍🏾.

    @SchulzChris Před 4 lety +1

    Nice work Tom. One suggestion. I have found it easier to keep the axle pushed inward to gain room to torque the hub bolts. Also helps when removing the bolts.
    Love those cars! When GM designed those cars there was a lot excitement on how well they drove and handled.

    • @Trialnerror
      @Trialnerror  Před 4 lety +1

      Yea, you're dead on in regards to the axle, even with that it's still a tight spot. This was one of the first cars that was made after the big shakeup at GM where they told the marketing teams and executive bean counters to piss off and turned control back over to the engineers. With the exception of a few bonehead design issues, the vast majority of the design and materials are right up there with what one would expect from a "premium" brand. This isn't your grand dad's Northstar Caddy. Those day's are long gone lol.

    Hi.. Definitely subscribed! Need to do both sides this coming week. They are getting bad fast. But I'm wondering, does the car need a whee alignment after the knuckle change?
    Hoping for a reply even though video is 3 years old 😬

      Honestly, no real need unless you track the car. Assuming you have the Brembo brakes on your model ATS. Daily driving these massive brakes don't get very warm sot he fluid has a very east life!

  • @trevorcourtney4326
    @trevorcourtney4326 Před 3 lety

    So your ATS is a 13’ but has the headlight and fog lights that have the led strip like all newer models. My wife’s 13 ATS is a base model. Ao not light strip. Is it possible to upgrade to the ones with the strip or will there need to be custom wiring done for something like that?

    • @Trialnerror
      @Trialnerror  Před 3 lety

      I don't think that's a direct swap. The LED version of headlights are really different. Not just the LED but they also have the motorized projector beams that turn the headlights left/right/up and down depending on if you're turning, heading up or down a hill. I'm guessing there's a completely separate BCM that controls this so it's not part of the factory wiring (the wiring is most likely there).

    I just noticed the lights on your lift that run up both posts on your newest video, but they were not on like this video. How do you like the lights? Did i miss you talking about the lights in one of your videos? Which lights did you go with?

    • @Trialnerror
      @Trialnerror  Před 4 lety

      They are leftovers from the lights on the ceiling. I added them to the lift but never really talked about them. I really like it. It does a nice job of throwing light up and under the cars. I just used 3m tape to attach them and wired them to one leg of the 220v that feeds the lift (not to code lol).

    Are you supposed to tighten some of the suspension bolts with the car on the ground or is that a myth?

    • @Trialnerror
      @Trialnerror  Před 3 lety

      Never heard of that to be honest.

    • @vdub5818
      @vdub5818 Před 3 lety +1

      Definitely not a myth but only really applies to where the control arms meet the subframe and not ball jointed connections. If one were to tighten a bolt, that has a rubber or poly bushing cushioning the joint, while the suspension is at full droop it will bind as the arm goes through its range of motion. It either wont allow the arm to fully articulate to full compression or it may allow it to but will literally destroy the bushing at it does. When tightening at ride height it allows for the plus or minus movements of compression or extension.
      Now if you have spherical bushings, or the likes, it matters not as the spherical ball is able to rotate fully as opposed to a static rubber or poly bushing that literally can not rotate.
      This is a big deal mainly with vehicles like Jeeps and such where you have alot of suspension travel, but the concept 100% still applies.

    • @louie1487
      @louie1487 Před 3 lety

      Doesn't have to be on the ground. Measure from axle nut to ground before jacking up. When ready to torque, measure again and subtract original measurement from new one. Then jack up the knuckle that amount.
