Fairport Convention Morning Glory

- 1968, pretty much the first incarnation of one of my favourite 'folk-rock' (sic) bands of all time (at this stage of their career they were known as the British Jefferson Airplane), featuring Judy Dyble (replaced the next year by Sandy Denny) and Ian MacDonald (Ian Matthews)(who later scored a #1 hit with Joni Mitchell's 'Woodstock' as Matthews Southern Comfort) on vocals, and the world famous singer/songwriter/guitarist Richard Thompson, as well as Tyger Hutchings, Simon Nicol and Martin Lamble, who sadly died on 12th May 1969, aged only 19, after Fairport's van crashed on the M1 motorway. Richard Thompson's girlfriend Jeannie Franklyn was killed too, the rest of the band escaped with minor injuries. I've just been informed that Jeannie was a "tailor" to quite a few musicians and inspired the title of the Jack Bruce album "Songs For A Tailor".
Written by Tim Buckley & Larry Beckett. From the bands first album 'Fairport Convention' featuring Ian MacDonald (later known as Ian Matthews), Richard Thompson, Judy Dyble, Simon Nicol, Tyger (Ashley) Hutchings and Martin Lamble. Clare Lowther also featured on 'cello. Sadly, this video is not available on some devices such as mobile phones. - Hudba
Lamble looks about 15-16 years old..... Crying shame he only had a few years left.... Rest easy martin..
Lost in psychedelic folk bliss...
Been a Fairport fan for over 30 years, and this is the first footage I've ever seen with Martin Lamble performing...awesome!
WoW fantastic camera work for 50+ years ago. Think I first saw them just after Sandy joined. Seeing RT on Saturday, I joke I've been following him since we were 19. Thanks for posting this!
The lovely judy dyble
RIP
Heartbreaking to see footage of Martin Lamble.
mickigoe but strangely comforting too to know that there is a little bit of footage of him , I’m grateful for that
@@vibesinthesky I was at school with Martin, and played bass in his previous band.
@@louishenderson521Martins a great drummer
Love Tim Buckley, love Fairport Convention, what a treat!
Love Judy's leather dress.
Nice version 😊
I guess RT was just born with it...how else do you explain that solo coming from a kid?
what a solo!
Richard Thompson is a legend definitely
Richard Thompson is up there with Peter Green…Paul Kossoff and Robin Trower when we talk about the great British guitarists. Technically of a very high standard. And here we see a very young Martin Lamble. What a precious rare talent was he. Left us way to soon.
Como adoro a esta banda
Boa demais !
Conhece o Tim Buckley tb ?
beautiful ...folk rock at its best
Sublime ❤
Ashley is playing that bass like a man! To the point. And Iain just has a fantastic voice.
I'm not sure I'd call it fantastic.
I've always really liked Ian's voice. The brief time (after Judy Dyble left) that he shared vocals with Sandy Denny was lovely. A couple of years later they recorded the gorgeous "If you Saw Through My Eyes" on Matthew's solo album. His career since then may have been relatively low key, but always classy 👍
This is an old Tim Buckley song if I'm not mistaken. Love this arrangement and performance.
Yes it was written by Tim, and was on his "Happy Sad" album.
@@CANARVONKID It's by Tim, yes, but it's on "Goodbye and Hello."
oldjack, this version was done when Buckley's song was new.
Lots of research in the bio! I had that Jack Bruce album.
☮
Man, I know I've heard this song before. The original BS&T album? I'll figure it out.
Tim Buckley wrote it
@@vibesinthesky Just looked at my old vinyl collection. Blood Sweat and Tears did a version of this song on "Child Is Father to the Man", their very first album lead by Al Kooper. Released February 1968. Steve Katz does a very credible job of singing it.
Here's another interesting piece of information I found while making this connection: Jim Fielder, BS&T bassist, went to HS with no other than Tim Buckley and Larry Beckett! Fielder has always been one of my favorite bassist.
I still prefer Tim Buckly's version!
I don't ;)
@@juicerversion1236 Well everybody is entitled to an opinion, and we have expressed it!
@@CANARVONKID I know Glenn. I was just joshin' ya. Hence the wink. Hope you're well!
Blood, Sweat and Tears do it justice as well
And This Mortal Coil
I for one think it is a wonderful interpertation.
Wonderful guitar solo, singing and drums....
Sky Vibes - please fix the erroneous "MacDonald" - you later get it right saying this is Ian Matthews. / Jeannie Franklyn was tailor to many rock groups, including Cream. Jack Bruce's "Songs for a Tailor" comes from that.
Hi 7777Scion, I'm not sure it is in fact erroneous - if you look at the band listings on the first Fairport album he is credited as "Ian MacDonald: lead vocals, jews harp" so unless they got it wrong back then? I do know his birth name was Iain Matthew McDonald and then I believe he was known as Ian MacDonald / Ian Matthews and in 1989 reverted to the original spelling of his first name Iain Matthews. Anyway, I'm happy to change it in the description to avoid any further confusion! Didn't know the Jeannie Franklin / Jack Bruce fact tho', that's quite interesting.
Amazing how many people don't know he changed his name to avoid confusion with the guy from King Crimson.
Seriously the BBC’s camera men where so shit back in the day especially with recording musicians 0:00 like why not film the actual rhythm player 😂
Except it’s from French TV.
I know. When Ian starts singing, the camera is on Richard's hands doing absolutely nothing. Dreadful videography!
