    Great video! I’m a big fx30 raw shooter so cool to see you can actually use DCI on the FX3 but we can’t in the fx30 (i 100% understand why thou) and that goes into how Sony uses their sensors. As you said, “traditionally” DCI gives you all edge to edge of the cameras sensor side to side. Yes, bexause not all camera sensors are created equal. Most don’t use the full sensor, but Sony…..does. It’s really weird. So the crop from the top and bottom is to give you the “aspect ratio” of DCI as that’s what DCI REALLY is. It’s just an aspect ratio for cinema. That’s all. It just so happens to work on most cameras by giving you more edge to edge but Sony already gives you that. So with Sony, it’s kinda the reverse. You don’t gain more image lol you actually lose a bit on the top and bottom. I tested this by taking a photo on my fx30 in its open gate aspect ratio and, yup. Same edge to edge. All I got was more on the top and bottom. It’s Sonys way of doing things. You either love it or you hate it lmao. I’ve also heard some rumors that’s why we won’t get open gate on these cameras? Because it wouldn’t make much sense?

    • @ludovicavice3496
      @ludovicavice3496 Před 10 měsíci

      Open gate because of the xavc codec limitation. I think Alister Chapman has a blog post about it 😅 is the Fx30 raw that different from internal? Can barely find any videos about it on CZcams 😢

    • @Kaotix_music
      @Kaotix_music Před 10 měsíci

      @@ludovicavice3496 First off, you cant compare RAW vs internal recording....on ANY camera. RAW...is RAW. Its different. So yes, it's different. Internal, what you get is what you get. RAW is....RAW.

    • @Kaotix_music
      @Kaotix_music Před 10 měsíci

      @@ludovicavice3496but in terms of RAW being different, its a gigantic difference. You can do color "correction" in the RAW tab and not have to make a bunch of nodes just to correct an image. You can change exposure, white balance, everything except framerate. on the FX30, we get a 4.7k resolution (but that means its cropped because we have 6k sensors) thats why the crop happens. Phillp R Peck has a good video explaining how that works, him and I did some experiments on that. FX30 outputs over HDMI 16 bit color, but the Atomos Ninja V/V+ can only record 12 bit, so it takes the 16 bit input and compresses it to 12 bit....which is STILL a great amount more than internal 10 bit or just ProRes 422. Because its RAW, your NLE (mine being Davinci Resolve) will debayer the image and it does it linearly. So it doesnt look like a LOG image. Whats cool, is you can tell Davinci to make it ARRI LOGC or RED Log, Canon LOG, whatever log you want....because its RAW! It doesnt know the difference! And you can work with an Arri Log and color gamut from your FX30 (which btw looks GORGEOUS). I have noticed shooting in S-log over RAW, even if i color grade the images the same...they dont look the same. Something about the RAW recording just looks....more "cinematic". It looks better. RAW has an extensive work flow but only if you make it like that. It doesn't have to be like alot of people on youtube SAY it is. As a matter of fact, i found working with RAW, im using less nodes to grade and I have so much room to work because i say the input color space is actually XYZ (CIE), the entire color spectrum the human eye can see (those charts that show you how much color S gamut records, or RED gamut or Arri gamut), its the whole thing. So your input color space is....everything lmfao. You just have to understand how RAW works and work with it ALOT and eventually youll realize the work flow is actually not as bad as youtubers make it sound, and sometimes...more preferable (for me atleast). The ONLY issue youll run into with RAW is storage space. Youll go through alot of SSDs. 1TB on the FX30 win ProRes RAW is only 1 hour of recording so youll need alot for a shoot, and if a client wants a shoot to be in RAW, you have no choice but to charge more becuse of the amount of storage their project will need. Storage isnt free lol

  • @LDLCGO
    @LDLCGO Před 10 měsíci +7

    For me the biggest reason to shoot raw is to defeat the interframe noise reduction, even for the internal recordings. If you shoot at iso 12800 internally you get ugly ghosting artifacts in dark areas of motion and you can't stabilize in post because of it, but just hooking up the ninja with prores raw output enabled defeats this noise reduction for the internal recordings even without recording on the ninja. Someone should come up with a compact hdmi dongle to be able to do this. 😁

    Took me a while to find this subject but this was well worth watching. I'm a novice at videography but am doing my best to catch up, starting from the true fundamentals of exposure and white balance (Still a struggle in real life mode) and now two sleepless weeks into it, moving into correct formatting. Up to this point, (again I am a novice, but wanting to do it the best way possible), I have been learning shooting in LOG and using LUTs, but as I watch this video, I am wondering if this is the way the technology is pushing, and if so, should this be something to use as a standard? I have a feeling most people just stick with LOG shooting, but perhaps this is the way to go forward. Again thank you for the great video (Still watching but had to comment)

      You're welcome. I'm not sure what's going on with your error. I would reach out to Atomos and make sure your exact drive is compatible or not. It might be a formatting issue. You might have to format it to a specific setting in your computer and then format it in your Atomos. If you can record in a codec with a lower bitrate (Prores LT or H.265 or something) than your drive isn't fast enough.

I just recently got a chance to use a Z8 over the weekend and shooting raw internally and the features and just the way it worked to me was like an R5C on steroids. Highly recommend a rental as not many if any youtube guys bother with nikon for obvious reasons. I never see many people talk about how damn nice the new z8/9 is as a hybrid and well enough to handle an all photo or all video workload to the likes ive not seen any other able to do without massive downsides but it has really none to speak of beyond the screen if you vlog (or if your nervous about the "recalls" lol). However, it still looks jittery when moving the camera at all. However when I look at 25 fps videos online (CZcams ext.) they look much smoother. Is there anything obvious I’m doing wrong? (When I shoot 50fps the issue is gone) Thanks!

      R7 has high rolling shutter (29ms), in 4k 24p or 25p it is oversampled from 7k sensor so JELLO effect, in 50p and 60p it does line skipping so less pixels to read and less rolling shutter

      I would recommend using a gimbal for smoother shots. You can sometimes get away with a few shots when filming in slow motion, but I always recommend a gimbal.

    Hi Josh, I've followed your setup instructions exactly (fx30+NinjaV) but the Atomos says 'no input signal'. The 'high speed' HDMI cable I'm using works to allow me to record RAW from my A7siii, so that shouldn't be the issue, or is it? Any ideas

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  Před 10 měsíci

      Unfortunately I don't have a FX30 anymore. Are you getting a signal from your FX30 when you are not set to raw? I'm guessing either the camera is set to raw and the monitor is not or vice versa.

    the movie "THE CREATOR" was shot on Sony FX3 and movies are usually shot in Raw and 24fps. So how is that?

  • @TheRealHarrypm
    @TheRealHarrypm Před 10 měsíci

    3:20 - When you start shooting raw you have to start buying 8TB drives at 50-100USD a pop and you have to either look to or plan to adopt LTO tape 5 to 9 currrently, its the same for RAW FM RF archival of analog tape media or DNG/DPX archival of film media its in the order of 1-5GB/min if not more on some projects.
    It should be noted, as basic ADC concept info also applys, the sensor can do upto 14-bit, the data stream can only use 16-bit or 8-bit for raw data unless you want to go outside easy to impliment formats trasport connection wise, the 12-bit log is more a conformed signal then anything else you could get a true 14-bit file if someone firmware hacked it, its been very merky to people who don't understand there kit on a hardware level.
    Not many people talk about how affordable field repairs are for Sony either which is sad, considering its a 5min swap for HDMI/3.5mm jacks now on the gen4 builds.

      @Rossie123able Před 10 měsíci

      That’s a good question. I filmed a live event earlier this year with an FX9 & Atomos Ninja V in ProRes Raw. Unfortunately I left the + crosshairs on the monitor and it was baked into the footage. But when you bring it into Davinci I believe you can use the color space transform function as usual and slightly color correct the footage. Definitely not as much grading flexibility in ProRes though.

    Such a shame the RAW features can't be used in Da Vinci Resolve, not even Studio. Having to convert each file to DNG is another step in the workflow no one needs. If anyone has a better workout, let me know. Frustrating when the likes of the C70 etc have build in RAW which can be edited successfully in DR.

      @@Josh_Sattin has there ever been a discussion for Sony to go with a built in RAW without the inclusion of ATOMOS/Apple? With more and more editors/content creators using DR, it seems to be disadvantaging Sony v competitors. Firstly you have to buy external equipment on top of your camera, then are limited on what editing software you can use.
