I've been struggling with staghorn and it's really taking over my tank. Low tech just like yours.
I bought some excel to try it out and I'm so happy to see that you've had success with it and actually explaining what you did. There's so much video's out there that tell you to do this but they never actually explain the process and it's actually useless to me.
So just thank you so much for this.
How did you go with excel. I’ve just started dosing at 50% rate. I have several small fish and 60+ shrimp. I picked up BBA from a rogue purchase of an aquarium moss
@@ibsn87how did it go?
@@samkoz2045 dosing the water coloum as per instructions or less. definitely has an effect on overall algae growth. In a good way.
It had no effect on existing BBA by dosing the water. However, spot dosing with filter off absolutely did. You could see when it “dripped down” the drift wood slaughtering algae and BBA in its path. Leaving visible clean streaks within 48 hours. Plus the BBA that was in direct contact with a spot dose turns red and dies.
The bad - it’s definitely killed 2 of my CPD’s and an amber tetra that just… died. And a large portion of my shrimp either died or they vanished in the plants that have absolutely gone bonkers.
I had BBA on some of my Marimo moss balls. I spot treated the BBA and it killed my moss where it went in direct contact with it. All my other plants are fine and growing like crazy.
So. In summary. If you can - remove your fish. I cannot.
Turn off filter, let the water settle, spot treat from the bottom and work your way up (to avoid stirring water as much as possible) and spot treat bit by bit. Leave for
Seachem Excel absolutely worked for my Staghorn and BBA.
I dosed quantity wise exactly as directed, but I did so by mixing it 50-50 with water, then applying it directly onto the BBA and Staghorn with a turkey baster sort of thing (very narrow opening).
It was EXTREMELY effective. 2 weeks and it was all gone. I do not dose otherwise, unless I see it starting to grow again (rare, as I've got lighting set up better to prevent it) in which case I'll dose it a couple times to the water column which shuts it down.
thanks, guy! So many videos don't really discuss use especially long term dosing (i.e. every few days for such a time period). Appreciate that you did cover it!
Needed this a couple months ago aha I just ended up doing the 3-4 day no light trick and it worked for the most part
Didn't need you to remind me to "watch until the end for the youtube algorithm" :P your content is great, no reason not to watch till the end.
Thanks bob!
I swear i love your channel I’ve been here since quarantine started lmao but keep it up 👍🏽
I turned my lighting off for 5 days or more it just died..Cleaned all removable items with hydro peroxide..not thefilter just the container..rinse well.. I had a insane black beard tank...Now i have ZERO beard and used no chemicals in tank..... Key lighting off...the black beard died turning grey.. I am beard free.....
I did that in my big tank but my other one has Amazon swords so they will die if I do that
hey ive had some issues with hair algae,BBA and stag algae, it wasnt that bad mostly just on some moss but its like over night i noticed a HUGE growth in hair algae, like thick long bright green algae flowing from most of the leaves in the top of the tank. i havnt changed the light time/duration or anything but its like over night i have like 100% more hair algae all over everything. what caused this? i was trying to get rid of it not make it worse lol
love how you release this video just as i have an emerging staghorn issue hahahahaha!
It's not low flow or low co2... it's waste organics in my experience. You can see how much detritus kicks up when you use your pipet. Use a turkey baster strapped to a hose and siphon all that stuff out and keep up with your maintenance. In your case a good canister filter would be much better with these size tanks
Thanks for this video. Can you overdose excel ? Like everyday 2m per 10 gallons
Thanks for the great info and videos!👍❤️🐟🌿🌱
Thank you for watching
Hi Nick, just a heads up, use of the flourish excel will kill the jungle val, I learnt the hard way. Thanks 👍
It hasn’t so far but I’ll see
I am beginning to get taken over by staghorn algae in my shrimp tank with a sponge filter but I am slightly confused when you say its from low flow. The growth originated on the outflow tube of the sponge filter and has only grown in the direct path of the flow of water from that tube.
First!!! Your a legend, KeepingFishSimple!!! Keep up the amazing work!!! You are doing a great job, I really need this video! Thank you fir sharing!!!😀
Thanks again Lazarus!! 👏
How many gallon are these particular tanks that you are treating here?
Never had this.. but good video to watch and save for future reference👍
my tank has pretty heavy flow, and co2 that reaches bright green on a drop checker.... and the BBA is going nuts.... its also driving me nuts.
Thank you! Very helpful :)
Great video, just a quick question, I bought some ramshorn snails for my guppy tanks but they're pretty small so I'm not sure if they're miniature ramshorn or just baby ramshorn, do you know any way of telling the difference between the 2
Just gotta wait a few weeks until they are bigger
I know you mentioned not having any tank movement due to using sponge filters i was just wondering if you can get small wave makers for freshwater tanks just to add that movement while using sponge filters
Yea you can do that too
That is what I just did. I added a small internal filter because I
was getting very little movement from my sponge filter
Doesn't managing light an nutrients prevent algae??? So if you do that then algae won't happen. I had algae too, but fixed nutrients and lighting schedule, and bam no algae.
Also, vallisneria does not like Excel and can tend to melt with repeated use. I know because I used to do that.
Thanks so much for the video, I use excel on every other day and Potasium in between, il be dosing directly where i have staghorn for now with a pipette
been dealing with staghorn for months now and the closer to the light it is it grows very fast and long so gonna try this stuff and hopefully it works
How did you go with excel. I’ve just started dosing at 50% rate. I have several small fish and 60+ shrimp. I picked up BBA from a rogue purchase of an aquarium moss. Did it work for you. Any negative side effects?
I used a uv sterilizer and the green water cleared but now I have blackbeard. I think it was all due to a fertilizer overdose. I've added phosguard and that seems to help, but now my amazon frogbit is dying.
Does it effect your fish if you squirt it on the plant?
Great video Nick can you do a brine shrimp hatchery tutorial
Yes I will
I like your stands... diy or bought?
got it bad here in NSW, all my Java Moss got smashed... chucked it in a 20L with cherry shrimp approx 1 month ago and its all clear if you want a potentially free fix
Did it kill your valesneria and crypt? Or affected it at all?
Appreciate the video! What caught my eye: Are you feeding your fish macaroni noodles??
So in theory you could also setup a DIY Co2 System with x2 2L soda Bottles (baking soda + citric acid mix) and it would also work but may be cheaper. I had a hair algae problem a while ago, luckily it was only on my moss which i added to my shrimp tank and within a week the shrimp sorted it out.
Yes - but not that well for bigger tanks.
I've got 310L water, and these DIY CO2 injections would rather quickly prove more expensive than just getting a CO2 tank.
I got a black hair algae infection in my 200-litre tank not long after I set it up. I added Dwarf Gouramis and they ate all the algae. To be honest, I'm not sure if that's normal behaviour for Gouramis. 😂
What is wrong with the algae that was in the upper tank? It was really pretty. Does it mess up the water balance or kill other plants?
Really wondering the same myself. The staghorn is unsightly, but I actually loved the little tufts of blackbeard in the upper tank. I suppose like anything if it entirely goes nuts it's an issue- but just a little management like trimming other plants seems ok? If it's not toxic and it's slow growing, seems cute imo
@@novaskies4282it spreads to leaves and starves the plants
I like to use spot dose with hydrogen peroxide (6% w/v). Doesn’t harm fish or shrimp. And after an hour or so the fish start to eat the algae.
That would work too
wait, 6%? i always thought to use the 3%
I just dosed mine with hydrogen peroxide yesterday. BB was growing on my intake so I took the end off where it was growing, while I was water changing and poured some hp over it and worked on scraping off as much as I could. Today its turning reddish and dying. I'll dose again when I water change
I'm getting really pissed off with the black sticky algae on my plants and rocks. Are you saying you put hydrogen peroxide straight into the tank? so... 6% of a 40 litre tank? that seems like quite a bit. Will my Tetras not keel over and die?
@@stangoodvibes take as much water out of your tank as possible, and spray the areas with the BBA. the plants and hardscape that is still underwater, do the same thing. put your spray bottle underwater, or your syringe or whatever for the BBA that is underwater, and spray everything you can see that has the BBA... you should see a lot of little bubbles on the algae, that is the h2o2 at work. once you spray your plants, you can fill the tank back up, and turn on the filter.
dont just dump h2o2 into the tank. h2o2 does decay into o2 and h2o so its not harmful
love the intro
Haha thank you!
Try the aqua-pics no more black beard it works far better and costs 1/2 as much and it's an Australian company. I tried seachem years ago for this and had little success unless I turned off the light and covered the tank to block any light for a week.
All my plants and rocks are removable. Plants are in small pond packets or attached to driftwood. I rotate removing rocks and plants and use a spray bottle to spray the cyanobacteria and black beard algae. I spray, let it sit 1 to 2 minutes snd rinse. Kills it every time after a few days. I don't like using these type products as a water treatment. Have lost an entire angelfish fank using them.
this was a great video for me . i though you would apply to water and let t do its thing . put that piplet was the thing many thanks
I just got some excel today to try and get rid of the black algae in my tank
Ia this safe shrimps?
I have a HOB that has a strong flow and a large bubble wand that goes across the length of the tank so i should have plenty of co2 in the water. So why i have bba, is beyond. E
Did you try excel? Did it work? How did you get rid of BBA?
I stopped dosing fert's and reduced light intensity . No change in photo period and stopped feeding fishes for 15 days it died and just used a tooth brush and did 90 per water change .
Easy and quick and it’s his first time ha ok something he never did before but it’s quick and easy
Suddenly ALL my tanks .. except one...have broken out with this black sludge on plants/rocks....It must be able to spread easily. Looks unhealthy and ugly but I guess you're right...it seems to happen eventually to most people with water boxes. It's nasty though as plants especially, are very costly and some delicate plants can't be pulled up and treated with anything or have it rubbed off. It's making me irritable and disheartened...too bad for me
‘Sludge’ is the term I would use to describe cyanoBacteria. Use Chemiclean!
What is this 'chemical ' you mention in the video; is it just liquid CO2 ?
Not true. Bleackbeard algae loves high flow tanks just as stagnant tanks
And here I am trying to grow algae lol.
What was that , that you used for algae?
Did you not watch the video? @ C C
What is your ph and how do u keep it stabled
It’s normally 7.5-7.8. I always use tap water and never adjust with ph lowering chemicals and it stays stable
Black beard algae happenes because of low co2 and low flow??.. I have the oppositeof that and I still have black beard algae
in my experienced. light also matters. too much or too less can cause algae. CMIIW
Quality 👍
Thanks Alyssa 🙏
KeepingFishSimple your welcome, keep up the good work
So if u spot does arent u putting to much liquid carbon in tank is there a certain limit many thanks stay safe people much love from Scotland
He’s still using the dose recommended by Seachem.
@@prawnee9827 thank u sir
try getting a spotted scat fish (Scatophagus argus)
so far, no reason for BBA applies to me.... WTF. high flow, no livestock, heavily planted, but all new plants that are right out of the tissue cup... I am using high co2, and strong lights... the only thing different from this tank, and my others, is the substrate. in the past I have used eco complete and fluval stratum. I used tropica aqua soil, and since that is the variable that is different, it must be the reason.
Lights are too bright
And apparently liquid CO2 has iron so too much adds to cause for algae
Is it safe with shrimp?
I’m not too sure
It is shrimp safe I just used it in my planted tank a couple we ago for the day thing I double dowsed for 5 days and did a 20% water change and then repeated for another 5 day and like he said it doesn’t get rid of it all it still leaves little bits of algae on some of my drift wood and rocks
Sara Brown thank you. Really appreciate it
I think the green stuff is not BBA but green fuzz algae.
You’re right. BBA is charcoal grey to black in colour.
He looks like Simon from Shadowhunters
The algae on the wood actually looked very good, I would have kept it.
Me too.. We have this algae on our wood and it looks 👌
I also have it on my wood but it takes most of the nutrients from the other plants
i realize I'm kinda off topic but do anybody know of a good website to stream new movies online ?
@Emery Marcus meh I watch on Flixportal. Just google for it=) -lionel
@Lionel Markus Thank you, I signed up and it seems like a nice service :) I appreciate it !!
What are u using exactly
I think you could've said "guys" a couple more hundred times if you really put more effort in! But on a serious note, your videos are superb!
Fab, I'm going to try that. ASAP
👏
Thank you so.much
Recently had an outbreak of black beard algae. I posted some clips on my channel and with the help of the community here on CZcams. We identified black beard algae. I've done a deep clean And hopefully that's the end of black beard algae. I'll post updates on my channel.
How did you fix your BBA outbreak. My tank was stable until I added an aquarium bought moss.
@@ibsn87 I used flourish XL
@@ryemax94 thanks. Many horror stories of killing fish. I just started dosing at 50%. I have CPD’s, amber tetras and a few other small fish + 60+ shrimp that are breeding like crazy
Did you spot dose with a syringe? Or just add to the water column? Any negatives to using excel.
@@ibsn87 I just followed the dose instructions on the bottle.
Worked very quickly
No negative results that I noticed.
@@ryemax94 awesome! I’ll keep it up.
I don't think your bright green algae is black beard...
I found flying foxes (fish) did the job for me
hello!
Hellooooo
Helloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Gonna try this method for sure, I've ran into some BBA too in the past few weeks in my aquarium, I cut down on the ferts and the light and added some ottocinclus and nerite snails to the tank, it now looks a bit better but maybe the Excel can eradicate it. Thank you so much for your videos, really like them!
Thanks for watching

Anyone kinda like how this alga looks? Or is that just me...
Squir... I mean spray

Wtf hahah

Helloooo
Hellooooo
That top aquarium’s algae looked like cladophora, not staghorn. Also, you weren’t adding ‘carbon’ to the aquarium. You were adding Glutaraldehyde.
Yes, it’s annoying when other channels don’t show follow through but it’s equally annoying when channels spread misinformation
