  • Your bass setup is an essential aspect of your tone. That’s why in this lesson, I’m going to share the process I use to get the ideal string height and intonation so you can rock on your next gig.
Measuring from the top of the 12th fret, aim for 1mm-2mm from the G string to the E string.

Honestly, I don't get the complaints about it. I mostly play vintage stuff, and yeah my newer boutiques with quick adjusts are nice. But the process of detuning popping out 4 screws and adjusting the rod and putting it all back together takes like 5 min an adjustment. It's not that bad IMHO.

@@Generalbas1972 Yes, a person that doesn’t know what they’re doing is not going to be able to do this right based on this short incomplete video; everything you do, every adjustment you make, needs to be referenced to final tension on the neck, with every string tuned to desired pitch and intonated properly. It’s an iterative process that needs to be done in a stable environment, takes time to get right, and is ultimately only 100% with a given set of strings at a particular tuning in a specific environment. Since we have a variance of conditions between winter and summer humidity extremes, I usually opt to
do my setups when we’re between the extremes; Hence, I only do string changes those times during the year, too! Also the role of nut slotting and string height at the nut is part of the equation, not just truss rod adjustment, and string length and height at the bridge. Not one of Scott’s best videos, sad to say..

    Often overlooked, that action...
Usually it's kept too high, mainly to avoid any buzzing, but fact is:
You'll hardly hear that buzzing over an amp anyway, and lower action means your bass is a lot easier to play 👍😜
Don't go too low, though. You do want to give your strings room enough to vibrate freely across the fretboard...
Getting the perfect tone is a matter of finding the sweet spot on both string height ánd pickup distance!!

No way that you can't get fretbuzz on vintage P-bass with that low action. That's why I play on buzz free action since couple of years now and it's definitely about 2-3mm or maybe more than 1-2 mm. I don't measure anything. If strings don't buzzing on first frets that means I have straightest possble neck relief. If strings don't buzz on fret then I get the lowest possible action for that strings and if strings don't wobbling, chorusing or have short sustain on every fret and are with the same loudness from treble to bass side that's where my pickups have optimal sound and not interfere with magnetic pole with strings too much. That's all. And you must remember just couple of things - 1. new strings, 2. neck relief, 3. string height, 4. pickup height, 5. intonation. Always in that order. Just make it one time and forget if you use the same string gauges and brand. Sometimes you need just adjust truss rod if climate change and neck's gonna straight or bowed but that's all.
