      I try to be 100% thrifted with natural fibers for the top layers (wool, cotton, hemp, viscose) and undies come new from Comazo/Living Crafts (100% GOTS cotton). Shoes is tough. Second hand is hard, leather can be repaired very long, converse with recycled soles feels low impact.

      Thrifted clothes or excahneged with friends. For shoes I only buy quality barefoot and have only like 6 pairs (we have 4 seasons). If buying new then making sure to buy quality. Mending clothes is also a big one for me:)

    I love how you worded it: it’s not an aesthetic, it’s a method. Thanks for helping to inspire me to shop secondhand! Today that is how I strive to shop (occasionally I can’t avoid brand new, but those instances are few and far between). I’ve found that I actually am more likely to explore ways to express myself through clothes when I shop secondhand, because pieces are so much more affordable, there’s such an interesting collection and sense of never knowing what you’re going to find, and there’s no guilt environmentally or ethically in buying, I am more likely to try things I wouldn’t have given a second glance otherwise. (Also, and this might be a me thing, but I also find I’m more likely to reach for something I bought secondhand if it isn’t new, it feels less like it’s stepped off of a showroom floor since it’s pre-owned…). I’ve had a habit of buying secondhand for cost’s sake for a few years now (have coincidentally found some of my favorite pieces that way), but still bought new sometimes without much thought. Over a few years I slowly learned about fast fashion and its detrimental effects, and last year I started intentionally going to secondhand shops to have a look…and I added more pieces to my wardrobe than I have in I think at least the three years prior combined 😂 at least 90% secondhand. Continuing those shopping habits today, and continuing to find pieces I absolutely love.

    I am so amazed how you have the ability to put together an outfit. I can not:) I just have black and grey and so all goes together. I sometimes see a combination in a video and I go "oooo I have those pieces, I can put them together" but mostly for me clothes are utalitarian. (Must be comfy and warm in winter). Also-does anyone else like exchanging clothes with friends? They hold special meaning to me, cause they remind me of that person.

    Hi Gittemary! :) I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I am trying to make my food more vegan and zero waste. I am currently vegetarian. The recipes I know or can think of either 1) are not vegan, 2) are not zero waste, 3) are either very protein-heavy or very carb-heavy without a good balance of nutrients, or 4) take a long time to prepare and cook (I am not currently a good or experienced cook). I don't know what part of the problem to tackle first. Do you have any suggestions or helpful tips for what to focus on first, and what to work on after I figure that part out? Thank you so much!! :)

    • @AnnikaWithAk
      @AnnikaWithAk Před rokem +1

      I am not Gittemary but I can help too ;) what kind of dishes are you thinking about ? Veggies can often be bought without wrapped in plastic, else I would focus on making the dishes plantbased first and not worry too much about the packaging for now. Potatoes, lentils, beans, pasta, rice can all be made into amazing dishes. I usually just look into my fridge and cupboard, figure out what goes together and cook that. As long as you have a great variety of plantbased foods you are getting all the nutrients you need. Obvs this does not apply to vegan pizza/cheese/burgers/fish sticks, etc, lol. Whenever I cook it usually doesn't take longer than 20-30 minutes at the maximum. I love to eat carbs and I often just cook rice, potatoes (baked in my airfryer or cooked) and then make a huge amount of veggies, maybe add some marinated tofu as well or whatever. So my dishes are usually carb heavy. Don't be afraid of carbs :)

    Hey thank you for your videos, they are really educating and help me, as a 17 year old who is really interested in sustainability. I do have a question. I still own a lot of products that are not sustainable and my closet is still mostly old fast fashion clothes. Is it sustainable as well if I keep my old not sustainable things instead of replacing all of them with sustainable things? Because I also think that sustainability’s is when you only buy something new for example clothes if you need it. Also, is it also sustainable if I thrift fast fashion clothes or do I have to spent attention to that as well?
    Would really appreciate if you could help me out on this. :)

    • @cathyh8139
      @cathyh8139 Před rokem +5

      Hi!
      tl;dr: The most sustainable thing is to use up what you have before buying anything new/new to you. You are welcome to thrift fast fashion. Don't feel guilty about buying a necessity from an unsustainable source if you can't find it secondhand or afford it from a sustainable shop.
      I started my sustainability journey pretty close to when I was around your age and I think a common sentiment among the sustainability bloggers that I follow, which obviously includes Gittemary, is that the most sustainable thing is what you already have. Do NOT feel the need to toss what you currently have if it works! Instead, when what you have is no longer usable, then replace it with either a sustainable new thing OR something secondhand, regardless of how sustainably the secondhand thing is made. Remember that by purchasing secondhand, you are removing it from the waste stream and extending its life/giving it a new life. Thrifting anything is more sustainable than buying anything new, so even if it is fast fashion it is ok. I have bought Zara pieces from the thrift store because I wanted to try a style without buying it new. The difference between buying a thrifted fast fashion piece vs buying new fast fashion is increasing the demand for the fast fashion company to keep making pieces, which is what we don't want. By buying from the thrift store, you're not just giving new life to a discarded piece, you are ALSO not contributing to consumption from a company that abuses people and the environment. What is discouraged is to thrift "mindlessly". Essentially, don't treat shopping as a hobby or as a distraction from events in your life--shop intentionally, when you need something, such as to fill a hole in your wardrobe or furnish or decorate your home.
      As a fellow limited-income student, something that concerned me a lot is the idea of buying something you need when the thing is really hard to find in the secondhand market despite you trying your best to find it secondhand. When that comes up, I think Shelbizleee here on youtube has said it really well and kindly--do your best and advocate for the rest. If you really need something and you cannot find it secondhand and can't afford it from a sustainable company, it is okay to buy it from whatever business you can access or afford. For example, I moved to a much colder climate, so I NEEDED a really heavyweight, warm coat for the few times a year that the temperatures drop to near 0 F. In my area, everyone needs those kinds of coats, so they aren't as accessible on the secondhand market. I have not regretted making a purchase from a company that is popular here because I could tell that it was good quality and would LAST for my needs. Buy a necessity from an accessible business if you can make sure you will use it for as long as you can.
      Another great resource in addition to Gittemary and Shelbizleee is The Simple Environmentalist. She covers a lot of free ways to be sustainable around the home. If you are in the United States, Shelbizleee and The Simple Environmentalist are both US sustainability bloggers.
