  • Here is a rather strange version of this wonderful 1932 classic, The performance has a fun twist to the beat at the first of this, then Walter Hunt gives us a wonderful vocal, then the end has a lovely Vibraphone ending that I LOVE! I hope You will enjoy this wonderful record as much as I do!!

This one is new to me! Recently, I found a beautiful 1934 pamphlet in an antique store advertising the band's stay at the Essex House in NYC. If only I could find their records! I'm 25, and the stories of older guys finding great records for cheap in junk shops always depress me. I stopped looking for records regularly after finding a mint-condition Big Bill Broonzy Melotone split in half. 99% of my small collection is from online auctions, and I'm thankful for what I do have.

Once I was riding in a bus in Buenos Aires and saw a sign in a barber shop window where they were selling some used records. I got off the bus and found 2 jazz recordings from the 20s. I don't remember what they were since this was around 1954.-

Casa Loma Gold! Fans of Glen Gray will adore this discovery! I love this novel tenor band arrangement, breaking out with it's dominant "Shuffle Rhythm" that enjoyed a vogue of popularity among dance bands of the early thirties. And yes, some sweet bands overdid it! Over used it and abused it. But here in this early incarnation, the shuffle rhythm is strikingly beautiful and novel! The vocalist sounds somewhat like Ozzie Nelson to me! A very different take from the dramatic Bing Crosby version that I grew up with.
Thanks for sharing this 1932 Classic! Anson Weeks is another band who made a stellar recording ot it.

Thank You for this AWESOME Comment! I rather LOVE the "Shuffle Rhythm" on this! It strangely is modern but very early thirties at the same time, hints why I said it was a rather strange version of the song!

@@roybo1930 I totally agree with you about it sounding both old AND modern! If there is such a thing as a " big band crossover", this is it!

Pat Davis tenoring the melody; Clarence Hutchenrider clarinetting the bridge; Peewee Hunt as a surprise crooner! Nice alternative to Jack Payne's scorching version.

Wow, I am only familiar with the Ray Noble/Al Bowlly version! From the comments I see I have missed quite a few , time to check them out

The perfect song for a relaxing sunny Sunday :-) This is an unusual version of this beautiful tune indeed (when compared to the version I know best, Owen Fallon's Californians feat. Smith Ballew on vocal). The beat and rhythm in the first section was a little strange indeed; I did thoroughly enjoy the vocal though and as you say, that final vibraphone chime is magical! Thank you so much for sharing :-)

Thank You! My first version was Bing Crosby's, then Anson Weeks version, then this Casa Loma Orchestra, then Owen Fallons and Ruth Ettins versions! each is unique!
