    8. Narita, Japan Farmers
In Narita, Japan, a collection of farmers took umbrage to the fact that their lands happened to coincide with the exact place that the government wanted to construct an airport. Tempers flared and tensions reached an all-time high, resulting in the farmer’s attacking workers, ultimately resulting in several deaths. To this day, an uneasy truce exists around the airport.
    7. Guangzhou, China Apartments
Sometimes, though rarely, the indomitable will of those who refuse to sell actually overcomes the wheel of progress. This building in Guangzhou exasperated the construction company with their stubbornness so much that the highway was simply constructed around the building. Though the view is doubtless marred from how it used to be, at least the residents of this building can say they still have their home.
    6. Speighalter’s Jewelry Store
Though many of the world’s most famous home holdouts reside in China, occasionally even cheery old England will find a stalwart defender of property. Speighalter’s Jewelry Store in London has refused to sell its prime location for over 100 years and is now surrounded on all sides by the Wickham’s Department Store.
    5. A Chinese Farmer
Another day, another major Chinese highway planned to go right through someone’s farmland. Ye Tan and his wife, however, had other plans. They eventually held out and the road was constructed around their home in one of the few examples of a home holdout going well for those who live within. Today the road circles around their meager farm and the couple have a grim satisfaction from their accomplishment.
    4. Chongqing, China
Sometimes the owners of homes on prime property are less concerned about their house and more concerned with their wallet, such as this home in Chongqing. The owner, Yang Wu, had no problem selling his home - but he wanted more money! In the end, he only received a modest sum and the house was ultimately demolished.
    3. Yichang, China
In a brazen attempt to get a Chinese man to move out of his home, which sits on prime real estate in Yichang, a construction company built up the land around his home, effectively making his house resided in a hole in the ground. The water and electricity was eventually cut off to his home and he temporarily moved away. His resilience, however, proved strong and he moved back in shortly after.
    2. The “Nail Grave”
Sometimes, the property in question doesn’t even have a house built on it, like this plot of land in Japan. Instead, the owner of the land has family buried here, and felt that the selling of the land would be a desecration to their memory. This plot was dubbed the “nail grave.”
    1. Yonjia Apartment Building
In 2015, an apartment building in Yonjia, China refused to sell out to a company that hoped to build a road right through their home. The resilient property owners were steadfast, however, and the city spent $15 million dollars to construct a four-lane road around their building. Way to stick it to the man!

My parents own land in a little village in Mexico. The government was planning on paying people $10,000 USD for their houses to build a highway but everyone in the village put money towards lawyers and they got the houses up to $100,000 to $250,000 depending on size and location. The Mexican government agreed but ran out of money after only purchasing about 12 houses. The project was abandoned and the houses were left abandoned and the people moved back in after buying their houses for $10,000.

Om Jaiswal nope, they just purely greedy. Usually buyer will offer them a same size of land, if exist the government regulation on size of land area, they get compensation on that too. Besides it, they will receive cash which is much more than enough to build a new house. If the house is more than 1 floor, for each floor will be sum up in area and seller will compensate the same size of appartment.
For example, if an owner has 240 square meters 3-stories house, government will offer 120 square meters, then another 120 meters and the first floor will be in cash, which is more than enough for owner to build a brand new house. He also can get 4 apartments (each apartment is 120 square meters), the most important is that we don’t have property tax... I can’t recall any countries has better policy.

Homeowner rights in China are exceptionally good. I am Chinese American. My parents illegally left China 50 years ago, but last year, we received a letter from the Chinese government informing us that the farm we had in China is to be sold and that we are entitled to the money. My parents had written off that property decades ago, but the government never took the land.

They do all the paperworks to prevent future arguments.
But the real problem is, they never pay enough for the land.
Landowners are forced to sell off their homes and farmlands for a very low price, not enough for them to build or buy a new house.
Also consider most of them live by farming, taking away their land means taking away their job FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIFE, they are sure to be forced away from home cities to make their living after that.

    • @momentary_
      @momentary_ Před 8 lety

Siloseea Irenicus I can see that. It sucks for the people living in China, but I thought it was a nice gesture that the government still honored our ownership of that land despite my parents illegally leaving China.

They are just more obvious with their tactics in China. In Canada I know a family that owns a building that developers want to buy. They don't want to sell but instead want to renovate it. All of their applications for renos to the city were denied. So now the place is in big need of maintenance...which they are not allowed to do. Next the city sends inspectors to come in and write up all the things wrong with the building...making its value plunge. The developers still have an offer to buy...but now at a fraction of market value.

It was sold to developers who leased it to Nissan to build an automobile manufacturing plant. It provided jobs, but the amount of money generated by the now-commercial acres made many overnight millionaires. Eminent domain is almost always an abuse of power that is always connected to money.

it's stubborn in the sense of mathematics , that they are willing to give you more money than your property is worth in exchange for the space. Logically , you could easily buy a better house in a better location with the money you'll receive. But you would be considered "STUBBORN" to not accept the deal. This is only in the case of the home owners simply wanting to keep their house. I think the ones who had family burried or the indian artifacts are not stubborn at all.

What is the difference between buried artifacts, family buried there, or just somewhere you spent your entire life? What if your parents lived there and their parents before them?
The value of something is based on what it is worth to the highest bidder. If I value my house at 10x's what everyone else in the world does then it is worth that because I am willing to pay that much for it.
It is odd that you can accept sentimental value in the form of Indian artifacts and graves but not that of a person who likes what he has and wants to keep it.
I collect antique rifles and glass. Sometimes I will put dozens if not a hundred hours into a worm eaten rifle to make it look perfect and come out with almost the same money spent when I could have just bought a rifle in comparable shape for $2-300 more. Some of these rifles are my favorite out of my collection and I wouldn't trade or sell them for 2-3x's what they are really worth. This is sentimental value. Many people form attachments to things that they spent time with or indeed built themselves. This isn't being stubborn - it is placing a value on a non material basis.
There is little difference between a grave and the house you were raised and raised your own children in. They are both the same thing in the end. You shouldn't separate them in your head.

I mean, if it is something that helps thousands of people, or millions in some cities, then, how is the person who is now hurting those people a hero? Part of being a hero is making sacrifices, and what these people are doing is failing to make a sacrifice because they believe their home is special in some way, that the wood its made of won't rot. That being said, some of those peolpe have EVERY right to fight. Land that has been in the family for many generations is not something to be taken lightly, burial grounds, artifact locations, perhaps even just a historic location particular to that region, those are worth fighting for. But a house that is bound to decay before you do? To each their own, but being stubborn and selfish makes you a hero not. It makes you no better than a child who breaks his toy before he will share it with that other kid.

The needs (or wants) of the many do not always come before the needs and the rights of the few. Many decades ago, native Hawaiians had a saying "one day we will be strangers in our own land" that has basically come true, with the massive development (or in my opinion destruction) of the Hawaiian Islands. Hawaii was changed from a paradise to a tourist trap.

I beg to differ here on who is the idiot. One of the pillars of a free society is personal property rights. When the government can trample on an individuals property rights then all pillars of rights begin to crumble.
However I will concede that there are, very rare, times where eminent domain could be used. But over the last few decades government of all levels have abused this power in favor of using to do more than build public works. Private companies have benefited from the abuse of ED. (in fact, right now in my state there is a questionable usage by government being fought in the courts over a privately owned pipeline running through the state - happens all the time)

    • @higheststrpk
      @higheststrpk Před 8 lety

mmfrnt1 personal property rights, human rights... expand your knowledge. you don't have any of those. you have privileges given by the government which can and are being taken away from you at any point when the agency of coercion, aka the government/state/whateveruwanacallit, wants to. if some poor guys little house is in the way of a huge project which affects positively to hundreds of thousands of people, it is very fucking reasonable to use eminent domain and pay that guy a very fair price and make sure he gets a nice home or in practically all of the cases, a better home.
but, there are cases of government abusing eminent domain, which i don't agree with, but even in those cases its for a pretty good reason and the homeowners always get good price. it's really never done without a good reason. the "bad" cases are so marginal that im not concerned about those.

It is judged by what the owner thinks that it is worth. For instance, if a family owned a house that their entire family lineage used to live in, it should be, because their memories and their landing staying there for so long makes money insignificant. it s their right to keep it.

+Maria Chat From Wikipedia: " Eminent domain (United States, the Philippines), compulsory purchase (United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ireland), resumption (Hong Kong), resumption/compulsory acquisition (Australia), or expropriation (France, Mexico, South Africa, Canada, Brazil) is the power of a state or a national government to take private property for public use. However, it can be legislatively delegated by the state to municipalities, government subdivisions, or even to private persons or corporations, when they are authorized to exercise the functions of public character.[1]
The property may be taken either for government use or by delegation to third parties, who will devote it to public or civic use or, in some cases, to economic development. The most common uses of property taken by eminent domain are for government buildings and other facilities, public utilities, highways and railroads, or for public safety. Some jurisdictions require that the acquirer make an offer to purchase the subject property, before resorting to the use of eminent domain.

+Maria Chat In China, Government usually offer a great compensation that is actually higher than the market rate, so many people want gov to take their land for infrastructure construction.
Think about this, 99% of their neighbors take the 2 mill dollar compensation (the actual land value may be only 1.5 mill) happily and moved out immediately. And they refuse to move out unless they got more for compensation. Most time Gov will try to work out by offer more, but often time they got really greedy and always want me and more. These people are usually very poor, they may not make more than 15K a year.
You see the risk and return now. If they can get 1 mill (that is almost 67 years of their salary) more in compensation by stay in their house everyday without water and electricity for two year, he will definitely do it. And do not forget they pocket that 2 mill compensation for the original offer too. 3 mill in total, what a sweet deal. Also, is this fair to others who moved out and cooperate with Gov in the beginning?
PS. I would do the same if a company hire me to stay in an area where no tap water and electricity for two year, if they pay me 100K(my anually salary) x 67 years = 6700K = 6.7 mill as long as it is not illegal.
      Would you do it?

I know what you're trying to say. But you have a primitive view of land ownership, thinking that rightful ownership cannot also come with responsibility. Millions of people consider themselves true owners of their property, even though they are perfectly aware that they must pay taxes on it. Are you smarter than all the property owners of the world? They understand that ownership isn't necessarily absolute. You don't believe in absolute land ownership either. There are PLENTY of reasons where you might be perfectly willing to come onto my property against my will.
All humans beings are born on this rock and have a rightful piece of it. It is very funny that people think there is a right to exclude fellow human beings from a piece of their own home planet without compensation. You are living on my home planet, and if you want to section off a piece all to yourself, you must pay rent, and we call this taxation. This taxation also goes to fund services in the local area. You can say you own your land, but there is also a responsibility to others.
You don't truly believe in absolute land ownership. Suppose you and I are the only two humans living on an island, and there is no way off. Suppose I came to the island first, and claimed it all as my own. Do I have the right to cast you into the sea, as a trespasser? Or must I respect your right to live there too?
Owning something doesn't mean you don't have to pay taxes on it. Ownership is not absolute. You're not god.

+Anime Master101 some of these houses are not suitable for construction of tall buildings because of there foundation. a taller building buidlt adjusent to them, that means the weight of that building sitt the entire area so that the soil under these owners houses are under stress. i guss these houses already shown up cracks and fallen walls. i guss they don't worth the offered money today.

I have so much respect for the guy that kept his land to preserve the Native American artifacts. More people should be like him.

Building and land development isn't necessarily progress. So by not moving, they're not stopping progress, they're just preventing annoying land 'development'.

The home owner are right to prevent many other people from having what they take for granted? Well in that case it works both ways, the people (the government works for people - not an individual) should be able to take their house away.

I have never seen any thing that puts China is such a beautiful light. Good for them for letting them fight for the land and not just use force. MY hats off to china, if these stories are true.

my grandma's village was demolished and most moved in new apartments. that was a learning opportunity for people.who want to understand how this happens in china. most people who stay simply want more money, while dignity and rights are never their major concern. fellow residents hate them much more than the government does, because sometimes due to the greed ans stubbornness of one guy everyone has to wait for a few years until they can be served by the planned new road or new subway line.

Yep, I'd tell them to do one. They should've thought of that before they started just building crap. No one should be bullied out of their home for any amount of money. That's sick
