  • Weird History Food is getting seasonal by asking the question "What the Hell Is Eggnog?" Eggnog has been around a lot longer than most would think and is often associated with Holiday Parties and Christmas time. But when did this winter elixir become a must-have for holiday bliss? Well, get some nutmeg and cinnamon because we are diving into this creamy bowl of eggnog.

My Grandpa made a special egg nog that was the talk of the neighborhood. On Christmas morning folks would show up at the his door, asking my Grandma, "Has Mr. Reed made his egg nog yet?"
My Mom made an egg nog punch garnished with scoops of vanilla ice cream.😋🥚🍶🍷

My recipe if anyone wants it
      Eggnog pannukakku:
      2c old fashioned eggnog
      6tbsp butter
      3 eggs
      1/2 sugar
      Salt
      Vanilla
      Dash of Cinnamon
      Dash of Nutmeg
Preheat oven to 350° and place cooking pan with 6tbsps inside. Combine all other ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Once the oven is to temp and the butter is sizzling, swish the butter around the pan so it's fully coated and then pour in the batter. Bake for 40-45min and then finish on broil till desired brownness is reached. Remove from oven and transfer to a plate to cool. Slice and serve. This will be a little more custardy than a normal pannukakku, and it doesn't rise quite as well because of the cream in the eggnog. It's still very good. If you make it to impress, I suggest grinding fresh nutmeg, it's a big difference.

I LOVE egg nog, and have done so ever since I was a kid, probably due to the sugar content, even though I could only have the non-alcohol version back then. I am retired now and look forward to it every Christmas season, WITH alcohol. I found a decent variety in my local package store that has bourbon in it. It was a hit a party I attended at Thanksgiving and I hope to get some more soon. It is addictive. I have never had home-made, but I may try to make some soon. thanks for the video - Merry Christmas!

I like it with fireball since fireball has a cinnamon taste already.
Also I tried to make egg nog once and it did not turn out well. I'm absolutely sure that I messed up somewhere, probably in the mixing area. Also I used whole eggs instead of only using certain amounts of egg whites and yolks so that probably didn't help.

I love it and it's so easy to make. A few years ago a group of us made some about 45 days before Christmas, and it was so strong that even on Christmas it was still a bit bitey. The following year we made it in the summer and then tried our best to let it age in the back of the fridge until 6 months. Some of it did make it that long and it was much smoother, but kind of dangerous because you didn't realize how much alcohol was in it.

I subsequently quit drinking that same spring of ‘17. Years later I found out I was lactose intolerant, and tried the alcohol-free lactaid version at a friend’s house. It’s still delicious but once a year if I can find that green and white labeled carton in the dairy section.

This was an amazing video, Weird History! I had no idea Eggnog had such an interesting history! Personally, I adore the Borden's version, but then again I've always drank something by Borden, whether it be their original milk or their DELICIOUS chocolate milk. Hey Weird History, could you one day do a video on mascots voiced by famous actors? There's quite a few, but let me give some examples for you to use. Paul Winchell [best known as Tigger, puppeteer of Jerry Mahoney, and inventor of the artificial heart]: the 1970s incarnation of Jack from Jack In The Box, the Jack In The Box Bunch, and the original voice of Burger Chef before Hal Smith took over. While there's only three 1970s Jack In The Box ads [Baseball, In The Park, Jack In The Box Animated Commercial 1970s], and three comics [How a House Makes Noise, Where Oil Comes From, and How Pain Helps Us] on CZcams, you can definitely tell Paul Winchell did the voices. It's especially noticeable with Jack himself and Onion Ring Thing. He only did Burger Chef in a few 1971/1972 Burger Chef commercials, but you can kind of hear his Tigger voice. Richard Beals: He voiced The Frito Kid, Little Oscar in animated 1960s Oscar Mayer ads [one is on Historic Films], but was best known as Speedy Alka-Seltzer. Mel Blanc: Toucan Sam. You could never guess Sam shared the same voice as Bugs Bunny, but it's true! Thurl Ravenscroft: Tony The Tiger. This one is kind of obvious. Paul Frees: The Pillsbury Doughboy aka Poppin Fresh. Paul did a LOT of voice actor work, and in a funny twist, he also did the Ghost Host from Disney's Haunted Mansion ride!

It's milk with coffee, spices, and enough brandy as to make it as interesting as you want. The brandy is usually a clear one called aguardiente (burningwater). There is a Wikipedia article in English about it, and recipes online, usually in Spanish. A few include eggs, so, in case someone needs them, there you have it. Enjoy!

This is the only one I buy as a can’t eat corn syrup. It’s the closest to homemade as it gets. I look forward to it every year.

Very interesting topic! I always wonder about the origin of egg nog! I love egg nog especially with my grandmother’s cookies that have pecans and powder sugar in them served on the side! Yum! I do not drink alcohol so I myself will not be making a spiked drink! I do enjoy the other flavors of egg nog they put out around the holiday like Pumpkin Spice! Yum! Definitely needed to get me in the holiday spirit! 😉🤩🥳🥰💗🥛

I'VE NEVER CARED FOR MILK & I always hated eggs. I believe I once projectile- vomited a bunch of eggnog across our living room, when I was a child in the 1960s.

I love egg nog, since I was a kid. Do like the holiday seasonal availability. Made a batch last year which was much better than commercial product but not less expensive to make. Easy though.

I am definitely a nog kind of person. I love you finished my second container of it a couple days ago and I live alone cause it’s a small container and it was through the lactate company therefore make it lactate free, therefore not negatively affecting my stomach because I love eggnog that being said, I’m not gonna drink versions of it with lactate in it it’s good, but it’s not that good, especially since the perfectly good forms of it without lactate and maybe not addiction but it’s become a borderline addiction. This is mine with me I need to go out tomorrow and get some more lol

I don't like egg nog but I love boiled custard which they call holiday custard in the stores. Packaged just like egg nog and they sell it only this time of year. I've been known to drink a whole quart at a time and man what a stomach ache but it's worth it. Never had it spiked which is odd considering the amount of alcohol I've consumed in the past decades.

I love eggnog. But at my fifth grade Christmas party in Delaware, apparently I loved it way too much. Never knew you could get sick off of it. I guess it was too rich with the custard and our Ralph’d all over the place in the classroom. Lol

My Father used to make it how it is said at the start of the video only without the heavy cream is how I have always had it. Honestly I think it depends on the region you live in on how it is made like many other drinks and foods.

I love the Nog and I am a alcoholic. But, I only drink beer and have never had egg nog with booze. I have gone through almost 2 gallons of nog since the beginning of Nov. I drink a cup in the morning and put it in my coffee. Try it in coffee, seriously good.

@@johnmorgan8127 I believe the flavor of the yolks are more prevalent and not so much like a pudding, It might be because I was raised with egg nog as a cold drink and am prejudiced due to custom
