I've been trying to find this song for 22 years! Heard it late at night on MTV back when I was in middle school and couldn't remember the name. Finally found it!
It's not every day you get an album that's just so dope from beginning to end. Thx to my boy, Tone for introducing me to this woman's work 20 years ago. I wish she wasn't so underappreciated.
2021. One of the greatest unknown pop songs of all time. Chilling and beautiful. This and the track before it on this album are unforgettable. I cannot describe the feeling I got when I first heard them. Hauntingly magical.
gosh, i was in college. and MTV had a show called AMP that showed videos of The Orb, Roni Size, Portishead, etc. when this Esthero video came on i was like damn...she's awesome. this is like one of my favorite songs ever
I love this artist's voice. Her musical comps back up that sultry sound. Reminds me of Bjork, as well. Glad I tapped into "Song for Holly" and had to try the rest! All the best Miss Esthero ;)
God this song takes me back to my late teens...wow. The sound of this whole album really encompasses the sound and dark vibe of the late 90s (at least for those of us who DID NOT listen to Britney Spears and boy bands)
It's funny, I wasn't a teen (I had teenager kids) but I was introduced to Esthero by a teen I worked with. I still come back to this music because it's just so damn good.
I am mostly a rock person but I had this album, Portishead (self titled) & Dummy, Everything But The Girl-Temperamental, and Massive Attack-Mezzanine, Orbital-In Sides in my backpack always.
I also heard Howard Stern give Esthero another mention today. He played this song nearly in it's entirety. He also mentioned Esthero a month or two ago when he was talking about songs that made him emotional, so she is on his mind. And like many of us, he still loves listening to the Breath from Another album. I would love to hear an interview and performance by Esthero on the Howard Stern Show. Can we make that happen?
The question is why is Howard Stern still talking about this? I listened to this "back in the day" and now I have a different take: Adrenochrome possibly?
@@LisaDeeRealtor what exactly do you mean? I rarely take Howard Stern at his word, but I do on this one. This song is extremely evocative and incisive, and I am not surprised at all that it would be one of the few songs that would make someone as cynical as Stern emotional, because it is one of the few that makes ME emotional, and I happened to look for it and revisit it myself a few days ago, after many years, which is why I am reading and responding to comments about it.. As the pandemic starts to fade here in the US many of us start to look for people we haven't seen in some time, and memories bring back songs, songs bring back memories. For me, this is one of the few songs that truly lets me take a look back at a part of my life that is gone forever. I would love to meet this artist, just to tell her the story behind it.
@@billroubanis4750 I feel the same as you, however, I was more naive when this song came out. I'm just saying, listen to the words carefully (they are macabre for sure) and also take note of the video; I think there's a message here. Most true artists do have intention or a message in their work. Wouldn't you agree?
@@LisaDeeRealtor oh yes. I have no qualm with your assessment of the lyrics. They are much more than macabre: The song is clearly about a couple murdering an innocent woman for sexual thrills, and the woman narrating is describing herself as the remorseless psychopath who masterminded the crime. It is a very creepy song, but that is what I liked about it: it was very edgy and disturbing. I do not believe the singer is describing herself in the song. I think she is acting out a part of a play, in a sense. It is meant to shock people, not to reveal her personality. The fantasy of the cold hearted killer is just a cool and powerful image at the time, because she is a WOMAN, and it is basically an answer to all the men who were somehow thinking that talking about being gangbangers and killers and mowing people down with UZIs made them look like real tough guys on their major label CDs. So here is a woman, talking about a crime that should give any guy the creeps. This, following a dramatic opening track about a woman who cannot stop sexually compromising herself for the sake of the most disgusting of men. I think Howard Stern likes her because she is exactly like him: she is a shock artist who does not have any problem being as bad a girl in her talk as is needed to get people's attention. She and Stern are basically saying "why are these shock jocks and shock rockers getting so much attention, just for acting out roles? I can talk as crazy as you want me to, if that will make me a star. It means nothing. YOU are the one who is not getting it, if you think it is difficult to do this". That is why this lyrical content appealed to ME. It was controversial and reflected rebellious attitude. And the music--trip hop, in general, especially with women singing, like Portishead-- is simply beautiful to me. If I thought that people like this woman really liked to murder innocent (or not so innocent) girls I would have zero interest in their lyrics and respect nothing of their work. It is just like other kinds of art: I can love a good mafia movie, but real mobsters are repulsive vermin to me.
20 years ago while pregnant with my first son (also did the same4yrs later for my second son) throughout my WHOLE pregnancy I would put a pair of recording/stereo headphones and on my belly and play Estero for my baby and he would calm right down ❣️💕💞
I'll never forget the first time i saw this video on MM, I was instantly enthralled. Kept my eye open for it again, and tracked down the cd immediately. She's been my favorite ever since. Told every girlfriend after that, if I ever meet Esthero we have to break up. lol
Saw this video 20 years ago as a kid and it has never left my brain. Had no idea what it was called, but I was watching an old episode of 120 Minutes and it came on. Kind of surreal.
I'm probably older than all of you listening to this now; I was in my twenties when I discovered Esthero and listened to them nonstop. ... Came here to listen for nostalgic reasons and have a different take now: Could she possibly be talking about an adrenochrome experience?
I first heard/saw this on MuchMusic's videoflow. It was one of those surprise gems that stopped me dead in my tracks and never left me, instantly became a song I would never forget.
Finally I found this song...I've been searching for it for a long time as I didn't know the title, the singer...I'm so excited to listen to this again...thank you for CZcams algorithms....
I have spent more than half my life wondering about this song/video. I remember seeing it on MTV when I was a teen and could never remember anything about it except: trip hop/motorcycle. Thanks baby hay soos for the Internet.
26 years it took me to find this song. Moved out at 18 and I liked this song. VHS was the only way to record it and keep it or buy the cd. I didn’t have money and it quickly disappeared. Finally realized all I had to do was him the lyrics in google and this was the top match. So glad to have it back.
Ufff Silvia, nunca pensé que alguien en Querétaro tuviera tan buenos gustos, creo que siempre pueden venir las buenas sorpresas de donde menos te lo esperas
Been looking for this since high-school. Im pushing 40 now. DAMMIT i finally found it. Kept remember her name as "ester".🤦♂️ I was just checking out some black eyed peas songs and seen a song feat "esthero". I knew it had to be her. Typed it in and the video pops up. Bless you youtube. 🤲
I haven't heard this in years but thankfully, I was reminded of her tonight. I loved this CD and wished she would have soared at the top wth Bjork and Shirley Manson. Cheers to you lovely singer.
Saw this on a channel that was an MTV clone where viewers would call in and vote for the next music video they wanted to see. This won once and I fell in love instantly. Got the album the very next day.
Ive been looking for this song since 98..... Im so happy i found it. I literally had to go through every song in much countdowns from 95 till 98 where i found it lol. God bless esthero
I was 21 in 1998 and this song and video blew me away. Sad to say I did not catch the "Un Chien Andalou" reference at 3:28 until now! Surf Wisely. Edit: a ton of other refences to it before that as well!
I'm not sure exactly what genre this album might be but it struck me as totally unique and brilliant. Weird, powerful, harrowing, beautiful and sometimes romantic. Given a chance, it plays great from start to finish with many surprises, like glimpses of strange places no one would want to visit or some kind of apocalyptic dream; A soundtrack for a ghetto drug trip. Strange indeed.
Esthero is criminally underrated.
YES!!! someone recognizes REAL TALENT> She is CRIMINALLY UNDERrated!!! Great music!!
the production on the thing though... she is great, the producer is magnificent
She’s so talented
Yes! Swallow Me popped into my head today and I thought about how much I miss her.
Your comment is also criminally underrated (of likes) 😝 But yes, I agree with you.
I've been trying to find this song for 22 years! Heard it late at night on MTV back when I was in middle school and couldn't remember the name. Finally found it!
Glad you’re here!
just a reminder incase u lost this song
@@jadenatkinson9890 never again lol
I scrolled down to the comments to make the exact same post. Thank god this razor in my brain has been pulled out.
Well worth the hunt my lad.
Still listening in the spring of 2018. 20 years later. This is what a classic sounds like.
SAME
What a talent and treasure....too bad she never received the recognition she deserves.
It's not every day you get an album that's just so dope from beginning to end. Thx to my boy, Tone for introducing me to this woman's work 20 years ago. I wish she wasn't so underappreciated.
That ablum is amazing from beginning to end indeed! Salute to your friend. Great friend!
This track is very intense! I love it. Very 90s sounding but does not sound dated at all.
still hearing in 2020.. who else like me?
Me !
I'm like you
Oh hell yes. Smooth into dream.
2021 checking in
2021.
One of the greatest unknown pop songs of all time.
Chilling and beautiful.
This and the track before it on this album are unforgettable.
I cannot describe the feeling I got when I first heard them.
Hauntingly magical.
How is it 2022 and there still hasn’t been a trip-hop revival?
life is too fast these days, but I think it’s gonna come back for sure
HEAVILY underrated.
gosh, i was in college. and MTV had a show called AMP that showed videos of The Orb, Roni Size, Portishead, etc. when this Esthero video came on i was like damn...she's awesome. this is like one of my favorite songs ever
After I saw this on MTV this cd was my first legitimate purchase at the age of 14 back in 1998 🥰
I love this artist's voice. Her musical comps back up that sultry sound. Reminds me of Bjork, as well. Glad I tapped into "Song for Holly" and had to try the rest! All the best Miss Esthero ;)

Bamboo you know the difference. Thank you for that.
Not just the late 90s. The entirety of the decade
It's funny, I wasn't a teen (I had teenager kids) but I was introduced to Esthero by a teen I worked with. I still come back to this music because it's just so damn good.
Bamboo Then there are people who love both, like me😊
I am mostly a rock person but I had this album, Portishead (self titled) & Dummy, Everything But The Girl-Temperamental, and Massive Attack-Mezzanine, Orbital-In Sides in my backpack always.
I have been listening this song like about 20 years
I wish this song received more commercial exposure when it was originally released in 1998. This song and video is criminally underrated.
when trip hop met 90's grunge
It's more like Funk/HipHop/Acid Jazz

ha yes, I used to record every episode of 120 minutes and AMP
Hadn’t thought about this for 20 years, and it randomly popped in my head the other day. I’ve now listened to it at least 20 times.

Hearing this for the first time March of 2021. Thanks to Howard Stern giving her a shoutout and playing this song. Now I’m hooked.

Listen to the entire Breath from Another album. It sounds just as fresh as it did in 1998.

Directed by Jon J. Muth, if I remember correctly... they also performed on HBO's The Chris Rock Show.
