      That idea feels like Cannonball made a baby with OutRun. Of course my only mental images of Miami are OutRun and that Will Smith song.

    Being a guy who started driving in the days of double nickel, living in a state that's very large, with (at the time) a low population density. With freeways that were designed for 70+ speeds, with cannonball movies in theaters at the time, and reading Car and Driver. I was all behind Yates.
    Brock was on Ted Copple one night debating the 55 speed limit, his opposition was a Washington bureaucrat. I do not remember the full exchange, except for one line from Brock. "It's real easy for someone who goes to work every day in the back of a limousine, to tell all of us how to drive". It did shut her down, it wasn't long after speed limits changed. That's something we need more of these days. Not doing a cannonball, but the spirit of what it represents. I think that has been lost in time.
    I do think a little of it still exists, in the face of endless environmental nonsense. A few are still pushing the limits of engines, doing what we used to say. "Sticking it to the man".

    • @rickc2102
      @rickc2102 Před 3 lety

      I couldn't imagine driving 55 in the now 80 zones in Utah and Wyoming

    • @carlosandleon
      @carlosandleon Před 3 lety

      What you need is get rid of restrictive zoning laws and stop designing your environment around cars.
      I'm willing to bet my left nut you need a car to get groceries, do you?

    Most car people should road trip between different autocross regions and try to string as many weekends together as possible. You get to road trip and drive hard while socializing with other enthusiasts. Fun and cost effective. Certainly less dangerous, you and your car will most likely survive!

    Great story Casey; thanks for sharing! Vastly superior to reading the news :)
    My Cannonball idea…I call it the Over Under Run
    Drivers over 40 yrs, time under 40 hrs.
    Vehicles over 100k miles, speed under 100mph.
    Stock vehicles, no detection tech, 3 shift minimum. The goal is to be relatively safe but still have fun and leave room for competition. Just waiting for my odometer to hit 100k so I can challenge my friends…

    When you approach something risky always know the worst case scenario. What if you're caught doing 180 in a 70 in Nebraska and go before a judge who hates speeders? Ask your lawyer about the precedents and what's the price of failing. If you're willing to accept it proceed but then do everything in your power to reduce your risk.

    Everyone is not ment to Cannonball. But then again, whom is to say who shouldn't?
    Does owning an aging supercar grant you entitlement to try? Does having racing experience make you allowed? I crossed a major metropolitan area 6 times in 4 hours (Each time at 20+ miles with the last time taking an hour alone), does that qualify me?... Maybe the one who is accually ment to be the champion can't afford to try? Maybe a legit record will be set now that everyone isn't quarantined?...

      @@borismcfinnigan3430 Yet I disagree with your point if view. The way I see it, Doug and Anre did set a record during a time of Quarantine. It's like winning the Daytona 500 after everyone else wrecks and has to go back to the garage. Sure, it's a victory...but it wasn't deserved.

    Hey Casey! Unrelated to the vid, sorry... I have a question on double clutching if you don't mind. I was wondering why it was necessary to "Clutch, go neutral and let go of clutch, rev match then clutch and go in gear". Does it give the same benefits to your car to just keep the clutch in, rev match, and then downshift? I have been wondering this for so long :P.
    I am sure there is an explanation and I'm very curious as a person who is looking to buy a secondary older car like a 944 or corvette c4.

    Setting a cross country record but sticking to legal limits all the way and having to visit certain city’s along the route, and you have to be a good planner to do so avoiding traffic jams, road works, where to get gas, … would be a better way.

    How times change, there is a quote in the Cannonball Run movie regarding the 55 mph law insinuating that in Ohio it may be a capital offence.
    fast forward , with the coming climate hysteria , that quip about the “Death Penalty” for speeding might become reality (probably first in Ohio )
