I can’t imagine dehydrating myself so viciously then going out and fighting the next day. When I get a little dehydrated I feel pretty shitty the next day sometimes even two days after I can still tell I’m not 100%. I really think it’s a bad idea to drain the liquid out of their brain then go get hit in the head a bunch. Strange shit.

It's called marketing himself to get to where hes at, because being a great fighter alone just does not sell post Conor McGregor. So, Colby has a Gimmick for a reason. Colby behind the scenes is actually involved a lot in charities. He spends time with the troops which alot of fighters could care less about, but us military guys especially in the Marines practice MMA as a job. So, getting visits from someone that made it in the UFC is truly a morality boost. The last one I know that quite a bit of work with the Marines was Matt Hughes.

Colby Covington is the real deal. Hard to imagine a guy talking like that if he didn't believe he can back it up, and hadn't on several occasions proved it to himself. No one wants to be the shit talking dude who gets his ass kicked constantly. But if you can back it up and it makes you a star, why wouldnt you make it a spectacle and give the fans a show? From a pure sports point of view, I agree. Woodly is the champ and that's the fight that makes the most sense ... but from an entertain standpoint, GSP and Colby is a dream match, both stylistically and "story" wise. It's like GSP vs Nick Diaz or Aldo vs McGregor. One can dream.

Yea Chael you’re definitely right that it’s a bit ridiculous for people to complain about people being “fake” when they’re trying to market themselves, however the allure of the UFC to a lot of people is the fact that it is real. So these fans expect fighters to be real all the time unlike fans of WWE or a movie or a comedian because they dont expect those things to be reality so it’s very different and understandable why many people would point out something being “fake”. Just look at Connor Mcgregor, the main reason he became so big was because he truly seemed like the way he acted was really him making his brashness and confidence that much more appealing. So yes, it’s important to market yourself and play the system, and yes it’s important to not give away a character but if tons of people or insiders keep calling you fake you probably can’t blame them as most likely that means you could have sold your character better and made it more believable. For example, when Connor goes out and gets on the mic you never hear people say it’s fake because he’s great at selling it, maybe one or two Debbie downers but for the most part people accept it. Now if you have every single media outlet and fan screaming something is fake you may need to make some adjustments. At the end of the day it just needs to look believable, people realize not everything is real and are willing to give up some of their common sense that this isn’t real to enjoy it more but you need to give them just enough “realness” so they can turn the other cheek and just enjoy it. .

as a fan of mma i honestly really appreciate chael’s insight here. i saw so much hate after 226, it was like everyone was so excited to be upset that a “mockery” was being made of mma. the ufc is trying to sell pay per views. it’s business, it doesn’t degrade the product to do what’s best for the company and what keeps the sport growing whether “hardcore fans” like it or not. it’s how the world works
The goal should be to make the sport mainstream and palatable for a larger audience. This is a better long term strategy financially as well, just look at the four major sports. Widespread acceptance and integration into American culture. Long term success.
It can be both a spectacle and a professional sport without appealing to its slowest fan base. Dumbing it down so they can make short term profits makes me worry about the continued success of the sport and specifically the well being of its athletes. (Eg; Stipes treatment as champion)
Boxing didn't turn into the WWE and it's a still a profitable, respectable, professional sport with a rich history. People will always be curious who the toughest guy around is. Most fans dont need a storyline and added drama to tune in. Chael is a great mind but I think he gets it wrong here.
Even if Brock isn't deserving of a title match, DC is deserving of a huge payday + it puts eyes on the product

Colby vs GSP would actually be a really good matchup and a very good sell, when Colby beats Woodley and officially becomes the undisputed champion. Stylistically it's a great matchup because GSP has little chance of brutally getting knocked out, while Colby still posses a real treat due to his relentless pace and wrestling. Naturally a GSP fight will get the attention from all the people, and with that Colby can really take the spotlight as the bad guy and most likely make everyone want to see that fight really badly. Great fight and great bussiness imo.
